Al-Qaeda claims Saudi prince bomb

Post by [R_H] »

BBC
Al-Qaeda has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing by a militant who wanted to give himself up to Saudi Arabia's security chief.

An online statement by the al-Qaeda Organisation in the Arabian Peninsula said Abdullah al-Asiri had flown on the prince's plane from Yemen.

The prince was slightly injured in the assassination attempt.

Saudi Arabia has a policy of allowing wanted militants to return to the kingdom for rehabilitation.

In February it issued a list of 83 wanted militants living overseas, calling on them to return to their home country and resume normal life.

Last week's attack on the security chief, Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, was the first on a member of the Saudi royal family since al-Qaeda stepped up a campaign of bombings in 2003.

The man had said he wanted to personally tell the prince in his Jeddah interior ministry office that he would give himself up.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — A suicide bomber lightly wounded a senior prince largely credited for Saudi Arabia's anti-terrorism campaign when he blew himself up just before going into a gathering of well-wishers for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the state news agency said Friday.

It was the first known assassination attempt against a member of the royal family since Saudi Arabia began its crackdown on al-Qaida affiliated militants eight years ago following the Sept. 11 terror attacks in the United States.

The militant who attacked the assistant interior minister, Prince Muhammad bin Nayef, late Thursday at the Ramadan gathering in Jiddah had previously expressed his intention to give himself up to the official, the Saudi Press Agency quoted the royal court as saying.

It is customary for senior members of the royal family to hold regular open gatherings where citizens can air grievances, seek settlement of financial or other disputes or offer congratulations.

Upon hearing news of the attack, King Abdullah swiftly headed to hospital, according to the agency. It said the prince, who is the son of Interior Minister Prince Nayef, was discharged from the hospital and nobody else was seriously injured.

The Interior Ministry has spearheaded the kingdom's aggressive campaign against terrorism, one that has intensified since militants first struck in the kingdom in May 2003. The country is the birthplace of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and was home to 15 of the 19 Sept. 11 hijackers.

On Aug. 19, authorities announced the arrest of 44 suspected militants with al-Qaida links in a yearlong sweep that also uncovered dozens of machine guns and electronic circuits for bombs.

Last month, Saudi officials said a Saudi criminal court had convicted and sentenced 330 al-Qaida militants to jail terms, fines and travel bans in the country's first known trials for suspected members of the terror group.

The 330 are believed to be among the 991 suspected militants that the interior minister has said have been charged with participating in terrorist attacks over the past five years.
That's a bold move.

Doing an attack on/near Ramadan sounds like an idiot PR move on Al Qaeda's part.

Sounds as, if not more stupid than that what that AQ faction did in Gaza.

Wouldn't this be countered by the fact they're attacking the House of Saud directly and indirectly? I was under the impression they were rather unpopular/hated.

On the other hand, Al Qaeda has been rather unpopular themselves for the last several years in Saudi Arabia and the wider Muslim world, possibly even more so than the Sauds, depending on who you ask.

Probably has something to do with the believe that if you die during Ramadan you go straight to the Paradise if such is your fate. Combine this with suicide bomber = 72 virgins and paradise. Yeah I can see some doing this.

How many major groups support the Saudi royalty again that are not American ?

Not many people will care they were attacked during the Ramadan. They have few friends beyond the elite few who benefit from their awesome wealth and influence. Terrorists hate them and ordinary muslims have no reason to love them either.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

Wait, so he said he wanted to personally tell the prince he was giving himself up and they just let him in? Did it not occur to anyone to search the guy? :wtf:

The BBC said it was quite common for people to meet with the Royals in town hall like meetings so it may not be uncommon.

Many Americans aren't fans of the House of Saud either.

Here's why nobody noticed it.

The bomb was in HIS ANUS.

Of course, because the bomb expended most of it's energy in the bomber, the prince was only slightly wounded.

Does this mean we get BC Searches now when we fly?

Only if it happens on an airplane (hopefully they won't try to soak their underpants in kerosene, while they're at it)

...then it's mandatory cavity searches for everyone!

There was the "Shoe bomber", now AQ has brought the world the "Anus bomber". How the hell did he manage to fit a bomb up his ass.

I guess a more powerful bomb wouldn't have been an option. I bet the bomber isn't going to be having an open casket funeral.

Eh, with a lot of lube I could see someone getting a stick of dynamite into the anus. He probably perforated his colon doing it or something, but he was blowing himself up so that wouldn't matter that much. The question is the detonation mechanism. They'd have noticed a detcord, so, some kind of modified cell-phone?

Bomber had half kilo of explosives inside his body
By Abdullah Al-Oreifij

JEDDAH – Suicide bomber Abdullah Asiri had inserted around half a kilogram of explosives into his own body to carry out his failed assassination attempt of Prince Muhammad Bin Naif, Assistant Minister of Interior for Security Affairs, last week.
As more details emerged of the events surrounding the attack that took place at the Prince’s home in Obhur, sources told Okaz newspaper Friday that Asiri’s mobile telephone was equipped with two SIM cards, one of which was used to speak to call members of the terrorist organization in Yemen, and the other to detonate the device located inside Asiri’s rectum via a call from the group.

It was also revealed that the explosive material was placed in small hardened packs of a non-metal substance, resulting in a scenario far less devastating than it might otherwise have been. Investigators are currently trying to identify the type of explosives used in the act.

According to the sources, Asiri told palace officials while waiting for Prince Muhammad to arrive that he would have to “have a lie down” due to fatigue if the Prince was late, something which analysts say could have been due to the presence of the explosives in his body.

Asiri had reportedly not eaten nor consumed any liquid for 40 hours, fearing that they might disturb the effect of the explosives. Asiri reportedly waited less than an hour until the arrival of Prince Muhammad and the Prince sat next to him in an uncustomary position in a corner of the room to hear him better, only an arm-rest separating them.

Investigators are reportedly working on the theory that the telephone call made by Prince Muhammad to Asiri’s fellow terrorists to assure them that Asiri had arrived safely at the Prince’s house was a signal for them to detonate the device hidden in Asiri’s body.
