Because obviously when people say Marvel movies they specifically mean films produced exclusively by Marvel Studios, rather than films made from Marvel intellectual properties in general.ArmorPierce wrote:err... except for iron man none of those movies were made by marvel.
People remember those to the same extent that they remembered the 1989 Punisher when the new one came out in 2004. Which is to say, marginally at best.General Zod wrote:I'm guessing nobody remembers the 1980s Captain America flicks with the goofy rubber wings. Or David Hasslehoff as Nick Fury?
"Punisher: War Zone" lost like $23 million so there probably won't be another for a while.Galvatron wrote:Can't wait to see the next Punisher flick now.

This move makes me wonder how much longer the book-publishing side of Marvel will stay intact before it becomes drastically reduced to select titles or perhaps wiped out entirely in favor of movies/television.

Why do you think that will happen? Marvel publishing is still profitable, what reason would Disney have to wipe it out?Darth Fanboy wrote:New meaning to the term "House of M"?JME2 wrote:So, the House of Ideas belongs to the House of Mouse..

Re: Disney buys Marvel
Because it wasn't so long ago that the comic book industry took a massive free fall and has only recently become profitable again. I figure with Disney in power there's a chance that if Marvel's book sales tank again they may not be as likely to keep publishing if they feel it can maximize profits.
It's good to see that the books are making money again, but I'm one of those people that don't believe print media has an indefinite length of time remaining.

Is there a chance the fucking stupid way the comic industry works might change, or is Disney likely to leave it alone?

Re: Disney buys Marvel
Okay, that comic strip rocks.
I wonder, is it too much to hope that this results in a demarche to Marvel to "fix Spider-Man's marriage or we'll find people who will"? Probably so, as has been commented upon it's just going to be Disney owning Marvel like WB owns DC and getting instant access to the character rights for animated shows and such.
Damn, hope this doesn't effect "Spectacular Spider-Man" or "Wolverine and the X-Men"....

In this case, yes, that is exactly what everyone would mean because we are discussing whether the quality of the planned marvel movies that marvel had just taken charge of would drop. Well since we are talking about Disney and their purchase of Marvel and their holdings, which now includes their own movie production company, yes, produced by Marvel Studios is exactly what I am talking about. Disney didn't buy Fox or any of the other companies that have made Marvel licensed movies in the past.Pablo Sanchez wrote:Because obviously when people say Marvel movies they specifically mean films produced exclusively by Marvel Studios, rather than films made from Marvel intellectual properties in general.ArmorPierce wrote:err... except for iron man none of those movies were made by marvel.

I doubt it. Disney has had their hand in the comics industry for years, and as far as I know, they do it just like the big two. If there are any differences, it isn't anything revolutionary.Stark wrote:Is there a chance the fucking stupid way the comic industry works might change, or is Disney likely to leave it alone?

Re: Disney buys Marvel
Even though I didn't read comics in the 90s where the industry pretty much exploded, when I found out a good comic series existed, but was released monthly and the TPBs wouldn't be out until maybe a year after the series finished, I knew the industry was stupid. Sorry, I want to read stories, not 'subscribe' to a ludicriously overpriced and low-quality monthly installment of shit across 8 different titles I don't care about.
I've got my 5 Losers TPBs now.

Pablo understood what I was talking about, the quality of Marvel movies haven't been that high. I didn't make any distinction between different studios, I didn't even know Marvel restructured its film projects to be done by one studio under its control; that's not the point guys. Simon_Jester was worried that the quality of films might drop off, and my point was simply that the films we have seen using the Marvel IP haven't been all that great and at best they've been passable. Some of them have been shockingly bad.Havok wrote:Well since we are talking about Disney and their purchase of Marvel and their holdings, which now includes their own movie production company, yes, produced by Marvel Studios is exactly what I am talking about. Re: Disney buys Marvel
Yes, but the last few films, Iron Man, The Hulk and Punisher: War Zone, are the movies actually made by Marvel and their quality has been high. Everything before that was licensed so the quality had nothing to do with the actual studio Marvel created and now uses, which Disney just bought. Before Iron Man, Marvel acted only as a consultant and the studios that had the rights did what they wanted.
If Simon_Jester is concerned about the quality of the upcoming films dropping off, then that certainly has to do with who is actually making them. That is Marvel's in house production company now, excepting the licenses that have not reverted to Marvel yet. (Spider-Man, X-Men)
And Pablo is not unique in understanding what you meant. I got it, 'A lot of Marvel movies have sucked'. That doesn't have any bearing on the question of future movies and quality now that the purchase of Marvel has been made since the people that made those shitty movies will no longer have the rights to do so.

Even better. A whole bunch of those comic book nerds running the industry were young enough in the 70s that they think the Superfriends was a good show and that what current comics need is a return to the Silver Age.Stark wrote:GODDAMN IT.
