Switzerland to be 'abolished' by UN

Now Colonel Gaddafi wants to 'abolish' Switzerland:
Dictator files bizarre motion with the U.N.

Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi is set to ask the United Nations to 'abolish' Switzerland
and share the land among its neighbouring countries. The eccentric dictator has filed
a motion with the U.N. saying the Alpine state should be wiped off the map and split
among France, Italy and Germany. Gaddafi is set to present his bizarre plan when
Libya takes over the year-long presidency of the U.N. general Assembly on
September 15.
He first mentioned his idea at the G8 summit in Italy in July. 'Switzerland is a
world mafia and not a state,' he said. 'It is formed of an Italian community that should
return to Italy, another German community that should return to Germany, and a third
French community that should return to France.' The Swiss Foreign Ministry described
it as a single-minded campaign against Swiss interests.

Swiss MP Christa Markwalder, told the Swiss TV news programme 10 vor 10 this week:
'We are concerned that Libya will attempt to use its year-long presidency of the U.N.
General Assembly to damage Switzerland's reputation.'

Relations between Switzerland and Libya crumbled after Gaddafi's son Hannibal, 33, and
his pregnant wife were arrested in Geneva a year ago accused of assaulting a
hotel chamber maid. Two days after the arrest the couple were freed on bail after the
complaint against them was dropped, but Gaddafi still hit back by withdrawing five billion
dollars from Swiss banks, closing Swiss businesses and arresting Swiss nationals in Libya.
U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice yesterday challenged the Libyan leader to behave himself
during his upcoming first-ever U.N. visit. Gaddafi is among the world leaders expected to
attend the 192-nation U.N. General Assembly and possibly other high-level meetings in
late September, including a U.S.-sponsored session on nuclear nonproliferation and
disarmament to be held by the 15-nation Security Council and chaired by
President Barack Obama.

Rice, speaking as the incoming president of the U.N. Security Council this month, cited
broad U.S. anger over Libya's enthusiastic homecoming for Abdelbaset Al Megrahi, the
convicted Lockerbie bomber who was released from a Scottish prison on compassionate
grounds last month. 'It goes without saying that virtually every American has been
offended by the reception accorded to Mr Megrahi in Libya upon his return from the U.K.,'
said Rice. Gaddafi, elected to head the African Union this year, has been on a multi-year
quest to repair his international image.

But United States Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice, said on Wednesday that the
forthcoming UN meeting would be devoted solely to disarmament and
non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. She added: 'It would be irrelevant and misplaced for
any head of state to talk about unrelated subjects.' The Libyan strongman, who
celebrated his 40th year as ruler of the oil-rich North African country on Monday, has
denounced terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.

He is known for hours-long, rambling speeches, but Susan Rice said such rhetoric wouldn't
be tolerated. She said that most nations have assured her their leader's remarks will be brief.
'We expect no less from President Gaddafi should he come,' she added.
First I thought this was an Aprils Fool joke. Then I took a look at the calendar and thought
'Frak me sideways with a chainsaw... it's not April 1st !!'

I surely hope he gets laughed out of his U.N. office for this (or his presidential... dictator office in Lybia)

Our politicians are prefectly willing to bend over and grab their ankles. Those businessmen that got arrested, and thrown into jail like a bunch of illegal immigrants are still in Libya, after more than a year. Our pathetic excuse for a foreign minister (aka The Cadaver) screwed up negotiations because she wanted to get the hostages released all by herself (which caused the former ambassador to Libya to resign in protest).

Gaddafi's a fucking moron, but cunning enough to out-maneauver our politicos.

Why should that be the case? All they've got is the money of other people and some nice cheese.

And some of that money won't be there any longer if other governments get emboldened by the US IRS' successful action against the UBS regarding financial info on it's american clients.

Do you have a source for this that ISN'T the Daily (Hate)Mail?

They are not exactly the most reliable news source in the UK, to put it mildly.

In any case, the title is seriously misleading. I fail to see how one madman's mad ramblings will see the rest of the UN take up the idea.

Libyan anti-Swiss motion rejected
A Libyan motion calling for the dismemberment of Switzerland was rejected by the United Nations about a month ago, a UN spokesman said on Thursday.

Farhan Haq told the Swiss News Agency that Libya had submitted the proposal for discussion by the General Assembly. It was thrown out by the committee responsible for setting the assembly's agenda, since it contradicted the principles of the UN charter.

According to the charter, no member country can threaten the existence or sovereignty of another.

The document was therefore never circulated or published.

Swiss parliamentarian Christa Markwalder had told a Swiss public television news programme on Wednesday that Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi intended to present the proposal to the United Nations General Assembly, which he is due to address on September 23.

The Swiss UN mission in New York told swissinfo.ch on Thursday that the committee which decides on the agenda for General Assembly debates had not received any such motion.

Markwalder, who is vice-president of the House of Representatives external policies commission, had expressed concern that Libya would use its forthcoming year-long presidency of the UN General Assembly to damage Switzerland's reputation.

She said Swiss diplomacy needed to work hard to avoid a scandal at the UN meeting.

Gaddafi first mentioned the idea of dismemberment during the G8 summit in Italy in July. Switzerland "is a world mafia and not a state", he said, adding that it was "formed of an Italian community that should return to Italy, another German community that should return to Germany, and a third French community that should return to France".

The United States ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, noted on Wednesday that the upcoming UN meeting would be devoted solely to disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, adding it would be "irrelevant and misplaced" for any head of state to talk about unrelated subjects.

Yeah. I think a better title should be:
"Switzerland not to be 'abolished' by UN."
Or:
"Sad, strange little man cries for abolition of Switzerland; UN ignores him."

It's more or less typical for Qaddafi - he likes proposing a bunch of wild, unlikely ideas.

And jobs for Germans, and the community where I live is like a big parking lot for German commuters.

The problem is, that strange little man sells Switzerland it's oil, and now that the embargo is over (I wonder how long that will last), Switzerland needs him/Libya more that he needs it.

Yes, but they don't need him that much, I'd think. If the Swiss have to choose between disbanding their country and finding another oil supplier, it's going to be one of the quickest and easiest policy decisions in European history.

I am extremely surprised that this is not an 'Onion' article.

Also - why on Earth is Libya a member of the UN?

Because they're neither the Vatican or Terra Nullius?
