Really you could make a case for any mental stat. Wisdom as you said, intelligence as a pseudo-logical understanding that "when condition X is present, you can bet Y isn't far behind!", or even charisma in the Influencing the World With Force of Personality application.
But as we know, anyone in OOTS can show genre-savvy if it'll be funny. Elan just has more skill points there.

gah, Really not funny. The 'Belkar can't hear' joke is old and was used much better two strips ago. Am I alone in feeling that OotS is rarely actually funny?

Different people like different kinds of humor. From a popularity standpoint it is better to vary your style and please all of the readers some of the time, than concentrating on one style and consistently pleasing a much small number of readers. Humans are inherently more inclined to accept the former anyway; see studies on the effectiveness of variable vs continuous reinforcement.

I am beginning to think all requests to Belkar should have visuals to go with them.
And Starglider, based off the pictures in the various Monster Manuals, a lizardman would need a lot more than implants, seeing as they lack the rest of the body shape (and nipples) to go with them.

I would think the minute they step foot into town, they should just boost Belkar's wisdom. He'll be better at finding things and can actually hear.

It has evolved from having constant punchlines, to having an interesting story and likeable characters, with the ocassional LOL moment. It's an evolution I like, since it prevents the formula from going stale too fast.

It just means you're getting a head start on coping with a post-human future.
For less scientific evidence of Starglider's point there are a number of other webcomics to look at; I think the best examples are xkcd, Hark! A Vagrant, and Dresden Kodak. All of them own their respective brands of nerdyness, wear them on their sleeves, and mostly change their formulas within narrow guidelines. (xkcd: usually about math or programing, but sometimes we switch things up and talk about crazy romantic gestures or girls! ...and so on.) I like all those comics quite a lot, but for all that recommends them if someone hates their respective facets of nerd culture (computer science, literary/world/Canadian history, name-dropping philosophers like a Sophomore with something to prove to the world, respectively) isn't really anything much to recommend them.
