Don't let me distract you from the excellent savaging of Beck that is going on, but I wanted to draw brief attention to this bit:

Does that sound just a little...off, to you? Like, I think I know in what sense he means it, but it still seems rather weird to think of the attacks that way. Almost like he's celebrating that.

Nostalgic for our collective freak-out, I guess. If only some other enemy would arise that we could kill.

He's obviously celebrating the emphasis the tragedy gave to conservative, militarist, reactionary politicians. It was a horrible day... unless you think it's awesome that it concentrated powers in the hands of 'your kind of people'.

Actually I would say the "After 9/11 the country changed for the better" comes from that, after 9/.11 for a BRIEF period of time the country was wel land truelly united, Dems and Republicans sat on the Capital singing together, BUsh had 90% approval, old differences were set aside, everyone was united to "Get Them" everyone wanted to band together and "Get" someone...

There are plenty of Conservatives who truly don't understand what changed since then.. They can't understand why we aren't STILL holding hands singing songs and all still out to "Get Them" Many on the Far Right see the days following 9/11 as a glorious time, and are mystified at how 8 years of Dictatorial government ala Bush and Cheny have soured the rest of american against their grand unified ideology.

I watch Beck's show for the same reason I used to watch re-runs of The Fugitive. The show sucked and for the most part it was just dumb. However, there was always the possibility that this would be the episode where Dr. Kimble finally catches up with The One-Armed Man, who killed the doctor's wife. The difference is, I keeping thinking this is the episode of the Glenn Beck Show where a doctor finally catches up with this fucktard.

And has him put in a straitjacket and shipped off to the funny farm.

It's a parody of the idea that you can

a) establish anything as fact if you imply it often enough
b) can get away with slander or libel if you phrase it as if you've heard someone else say it, or that you've heard rumors to that effect

No one really believes it and its just a gag.

It is indeed (very obvious) satire of the use of "some would say..." or "people believe..." as a valid form of evidence of a baseless accusation and then twisting any response to be further proof of guilt (RE: Birthing, Death Panels).

I don't understand people like Glenn Beck's notion that the Founder Fathers were modern day Moses' who received the Constitution and basic American government direct from God. Frankly, if my reading of the men in question is correct, they'd be absolutely horrified at the notion, particularly Thomas Jefferson.

I've been reading the comments and I need to comment on #106 & #108. Ryan comments on Wickard v. Filburn and gives 2 "anecdotes" as Mike dismisses them both. The story about the doctor has no source and I'm fine with that being a dismissal, but the story about the farmer is not an anecdote -- it's the whole setup of the case. Filburn is the farmer & he was instructed by law to plant only 11 acres of wheat. Filburn planted 23 acres & kept the rest for his personal use. His argument in court was that Congress couldn't regulate it since it never entered the stream of commerce. Text of the decision
