New RTS : R.U.S.E

Post by ray245 »

R.U.S.E. is an upcoming 2010 real-time strategy video game developed by Eugen Systems and published by Ubisoft. R.U.S.E. was initially scheduled to be released at some point towards the end of 2009, but it is now expected to be released Q1 2010 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. It's a strategy game involving the players to use decoys to trick their enemies into traps. Due to the complicated nature of the game, it was feared it may drive away casual gamers, something which Ubisoft have addressed. [1] There are six factions in the game, including the British and Germans.

I'm quite wary of such a game, given that it doesn't really seem to offer anything new except for the fact that it is emphasising on the importance of deception in a game.

I'm sure they did. Maybe I'm cynical, but this sounds almost painfully juvenile. The dynamics of warfare are based around deception, which is why we have games with fog of war, ruses and deceptions (yes, we have had them for fucking decades already). I'm sure given the laughable state of current and last-generation RTS games, I can make a "RTS" mod of Pacman, then hold a "press conference" and watch Gamespot eagerly slobber all over themselves in their eagerness to ask me whatever the fuck I told them to. Maybe I'll have them ask something along the lines of, "hey, don't you think your game is just a little too awe-inspiring in every way? Won't casual gamers feel lost and alone? I mean, it's obvious you have to be hard core in order to play, right? Just look at those beautiful, beautiful screens."

To which I'll answer, with a modest little smirk, "of course not. The norms can still play on Easy if they want. But it's really hard core. It's even harder than hard core. It's diamond core. Trust me... if you can handle it."

Possibly a potential career move later on, I guess. But for now, I think I'll stick with my weekly allowance from mommy and daddy. It would seem to be a less embarrassing way of paying the bills.

This has been floating around for quite some time. Everyone who's heard about it has serious reservations about it, and really at it's core it's no different than the 'lol cheat' powers in any simple strategy game. Still, the market for WW2 games remains endless.

Pretty much the only RTS to offer anything particularly genre defining is that time travel RTS. Which, while intruiging in concept, is almost certain to be completely broken.
What is Project Zohar?

Here's to a certain mostly harmless nutcase.

Nah, I sort of disagree with this notion that you have to be genre defining in order to do well - of course, you're not the one assuming that, but the creators of this game sure seem awfully certain that's all it takes.

They're wrong, of course. The cohesive experience is what matters. If their game is fun through and through, good on them - they'll have surprised me. If their game is a one-trick pony, about all it can hope to merit is a raised eyebrow.

It looks like a thoroughly standard game with a cheat button.

I mean, I'll use my 'R.U.S.E.' to teleport some units, or disrupt the enemy's UI. Amazing!

Nono, Stark, you're not appreciating the specialness. It's not a cheat, not a power; it's a R.U.S.E! That means it's based on cunning and deception, don't you see? Unlike strategy itself, which is... predicated upon... ah, fuck it.

It's sad that if they made it about ruses and not R.U.S.E.s, it might have been good; if the UI displayed what your units THOUGHT was happening, thus introducing uncertainly and scope for deception and trickery. This unit is heavily damaged and retreating... OH WAIT!!!!!

Instead of 'lol eight tanks in ur baze cause i clicked teh R.U.Z.E'. :)

And now I think I can glean some additional R.U.S.E.s, because I'm that awesome. One is a beam of energy that will strike from the sky and destroy anything in its path. You have to have units close, however, to mark the target. I shall call it... "Ion cannon." Then there's another R.U.S.E.; it turns your units invisible by another flying unit that can also disable the defenses of other units with a special weapon. A third one will be able to repair them quickly with a rechargeable power.

Quick, write this down! I'm on fire!

The gameplay videos strongly imply a Pre-Starcraft unit design and setup in organization. The maps are huge and detailed but it figures the developers would squander such wonderful map design for the sake of a health bar spam RTS. It's selling itself on gimmicks and little more and I can't say I find anything remotely interesting about it based on what we've seen so far.

At least Order of War looks like it could be good. The demo came off kind of strangely but i'm willing to write if off based on the gameplay descriptions. I've ended up really liking games that the demo did a terrible job marketing before.
Best care anywhere.
