NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (AP) -- Police say a worker with the activist group ACORN who was caught on video giving advice about human smuggling to a couple posing as a pimp and a prostitute had reported the incident to authorities.

National City police said Monday that Juan Carlos Vera contacted his cousin, a police detective, to get advice on what to with information on possible human smuggling.

Vera was secretly filmed on Aug. 18 as part of a young couple's high-profile expose.

Police say he contacted law enforcement two days later. The detective consulted another police official who served on a federal human smuggling task force, who said he needed more details.

The ACORN employee responded several days later and explained that the information he received was not true and he had been duped.

Vera was fired on Thursday.

Incompetence. It took him 2 days to report the incident to the police, and in the meantime he caused a shitload of bad publicity for his employer. If the guy had half a brain he'd go "excuse me a sec, I need to check with my supervisor on this" as soon as the con men started talking about seriously illegal activities, and call the cops right fucking then instead of 2 days later.

Fox News screams about this on national television for days, with their pundits advocating a criminal investigation. When evidence comes to light that the guy made a report to the police, they simply post a short article on their website that 95% of their viewers will never read. Fox News will not be reporting in a manner that will reach the vast majority of their audience, thus ensuring that the majority of their audience believes their first report. Working for any government or community based organization (and I've worked for several), one of the major things they hammer into your head is

"If someone asks you about something illegal, deal with it immediately"

followed by the individual organizations's policy for that (play along until they leave and then report it, or report it and play along until securty/the police arrive are the most common)

Unless the incident happened right at closing time, and the guy was immobilized for 2 days afterwards, there is no reason for such a delay.

Hell, he could have taken 30 seconds to fire off an e-mail or post-it note to his supervisor.
