Ultramarines the Movie
Holy shit!
Is this for real?! Oh man, oh man. All the details say it's that it's direct to DVD, that it's CGI, and that its being produced by 'Codex Pictures'. Does anyone more in the know have more... uhh... on the knowledge of this thing?
Holy shit, the day of reckoning is at hand! Oh man. Oh man.

If it even gets out, it looks to be an animation show.
I guess all that blood flowing around won't even earn it an M-18 or M-21 depending where you are.

If the animation will be comparable to those Dawn of War cinematics, then it'll be just great!

I certainly hope it's not for real, you couldn't find a more bland, characterless chapter if you tried.Shroom Man 777 wrote:Holy shit!

Even though the Ultramarines are supposed to be the stereotypical cookie cutter good guys, they also have a whole Roman vibe where they are as much statesmen as warriors and play mentor to half the chapters in the Imperium. How is that anywhere near as one-note and boring as, say, the Blood Angels ("lol vampire marines") or the Dark Angels ("lol asshole marines")?

Re: Ultramarines the Movie
Hey, both Imperial Fists and Ultramarines are awesome.
The Ultramarines are "romans in space", with some nice additions.
And the Imperial Fists are (one of) the legion(s) that defended Terra, and their Primarch saved the Emperor. Oh, and they continued to kick ass since then.
I sure hope it is for real.

So, it is going to be animation-based.Ultramarines is a 70-minute sci-fi thriller that will use CGI and state-of-the-art animation production techniques

It's funny based off the novels I would have gone with the Blood Angels being the arsehole/vampires and the Dark Angels as emo marines.
This sounds promising, if Chaos figures in the story then animation would be a good way to go to get the most out of it.Ultramarines is a 70-minute sci-fi thriller that will use CGI and state-of-the-art animation production techniques.

Re: Ultramarines the Movie
I'll wait for a movie not about humorless, fanatical monks with as much room for character development as a man in an iron-maiden. Yes, yes, the Astartes are the iconic 40K warriors but they are dull. Of course they're not built for personality and witticisms. I'll wait for the actually human Imperial Guard. Mr I.Gaunt and C.Cain would be far more interesting.
Of course I could be biased having read a few books starring the Marines (Space Marine, Iron Hands, Horus Rising) and I couldn't care less about the main characters given that they had all the personality of an inch high plastic figure. I also read some of Blood Ravens but am not counting it against the Marines because it was unreadable.

I would suggest the Space Wolf series or Brothers of the Snake if your looking for three dimensional Marines. Tales of Heresy has a few as well, notably the Space Wolves.dworkin wrote:I'll wait for a movie not about humorless, fanatical monks with as much room for character development as a man in an iron-maiden. You assume that any movie produced must automatically be about character drama. What's wrong with 70 minutes of watching a bunch of armored dudes hack horrific aliens to pieces with chainsaw swords and getting blown into bloody chunks?dworkin wrote:I'll wait for a movie not about humorless, fanatical monks with as much room for character development as a man in an iron-maiden. The Ultramarines get a lot of crap, but they're easily one of the more interesting Chapters, simply be virtue of not just being elite assault killing machines: they manage a small empire, are heavily involved with their populace, the nature of Ultramar means that some Ultramarines still have families etc etc. It's the same thing with the Salamanders, who are too busy blacksmithing with the kids to be bothered with being aloof dickheads.Bob the Gunslinger wrote:Even though the Ultramarines are supposed to be the stereotypical cookie cutter good guys, they also have a whole Roman vibe where they are as much statesmen as warriors and play mentor to half the chapters in the Imperium. Nothing, enjoy it. However I've come to expect and demand more from my entertainment nowadays. It doesn't have to be deep, involving drama but enough to make me care whether a character succeeds or fails, lives or dies. Astartes don't have that. There is very little to distinguish one from another in my experience.Brother-Captain Gaius wrote:You assume that any movie produced must automatically be about character drama. How about 'every licenced exploitation movie has sucked'? I agree with you, frankly; movies like this should focus on story no more than movies like Predator, with the focus on imagery and dakka. But the movies that go that direction these days seem to turn into unpolished shit, and movies that try to have a TEH IMPORTANT STORAY turn into Doom.
Re: Ultramarines the Movie
The real question is.... Will there be Orks?
I guess they'll go with the 'Nids as main villian. A retelling of the battle of McCragge would be interesting.
Orks should get their own action-comedy.

There all still in print and IIRC the last three books in the Space Wolf arc have been released in an omnibus. You should be able to get them easily off Chapters/Amazon.dworkin wrote: Thanks, I'll see if I can find them.
Well I haven't read Space Marine or Iron Hands but Horus Rising wasn't the best depiction of SM's, actually I'd say that part of the books point was that to an outsider they all pretty much look and act the same. Brothers of the Snake has a pretty good bit on it from the squad Sgt's point of view.Nothing, enjoy it. However I've come to expect and demand more from my entertainment nowadays. Yeah, it's going to be a steaming pile of shit, the bean counters at GW are going to micromanage them over IP rules and GW's wholesome family image into the ground. We're going to get about 2 years of hype and snippets of cool looking CGI art then it will get canned, ala Bloodquest.

Re: Ultramarines the Movie
Even better than the Space Wolf novels is the short story collection Heroes of the Space Marines. It's a bit hit and miss at times, but in general all the stories have more hits than misses and incredibly while present the grimdark isn't overwhelming. Hell, I think there are at least three stories where it looks like they're about to go all grimdark when the SMs go "Fuck that noise" and decide to punt that shit in the balls with pure awesome. One of the biggest character bits that often gets glossed over is that the SMs are supposed to be an elite brotherhood, where even though the mission comes first, they still care about their fellow Marines as brothers tied by their common geneseed and fellow warriors who have fought at their sides for decades to centuries.
Also, HotSM proves that Imperial Fists can be awesome with its story that is basically SMs vs. Orks Mad Max style.

I think half of it's just that GW bothered to develop them without imposing any weird traits that turn them into caricatures. That puts them a cut above most of the other 'canon' Marine chapters.Ford Prefect wrote:The Ultramarines get a lot of crap, but they're easily one of the more interesting Chapters, simply be virtue of not just being elite assault killing machines: they manage a small empire, are heavily involved with their populace, the nature of Ultramar means that some Ultramarines still have families etc etc. It's the same thing with the Salamanders, who are too busy blacksmithing with the kids to be bothered with being aloof dickheads.

Oh no they suck because they don't have shit like THE BLACK RAGE and the RED LEPROSY and don't go nuts and suck people's blood/balls, that means they can't be compelling characters that angst and do horrific shit because they have stereotypical "cool" traits! Oh no they are Ultra Smurfs not Blood Retards where will we get awesome plots with the Eldars and evil hidden secrets and CS Grotto?
I found the novel Brothers of the Snake to be a mighty fine read and instead of just RARGH! KILL we actually got a good perspective on a Space Marine as he ascends in the ranks, a good perspective on Space Marine lifestyle that's not just RARGH! KILL EVERYONE! but also has stuff like genuine character interactions and serfs oiling the massive muscular bodies of the Marines with body lotions - and they were a bunch of Ultramarine-descended chapters whose only difference from the smurfs seemed like an overemphasis of spears and waterworlding and harpooning giant sea monsters for fun.
They were compelling characters because they weren't a bunch of stereotypical "lulz superhuman killing machines" assholes with lame "awesome" attributes. Cause, you know, they were actually proper superhuman soldiers of the IoM?
