What is the current state of the galaxy?

Post by Darth Raptor »

Simple question, really: What's going on in the GFFA as of the most chronologically recent EU? If one were to scroll up an unbiased and uncensored in-universe news program, what would the talking heads be talking about?

Spoiler-alert:
Spoiler
Cade Skywalker is fucking around on Tatooine (yes, they went there). Hopefully there'll be some changes in store for him, as he's the most unlikable of the bunch in Legacy, and he's meeting up with family, more or less.

Darth Krayt is dead, but his body is kept in stasis by his killer, Darth Wyyrlok, who wants to create a non-Sith puppet Emperor in his place, that he can control from the shadows.

The Galactic Remnant and the Empire-in-exile still continue their tenuous military alliance, gaining some bigger naval victories. Things are still at a crossroads, so to speak. I have no idea where the galaxy's gonna end up.

Jedi Order sitting on their asses trying to decide whether to support the Alliance-Empire coalition or stay out entirely.

Ok, I don't follow the Legacy bit. So... the GFFA and the New Empire are now allies against...who? I know there was the Jedi Order of what was left of the GFFA, and Imperial Knights for the new Empire. Who was Krayt? I vaguely remember some talk around here about him being Jacen Solo.

After the Empire (backed by yet another incarnation of the Sith) defeated the GFFA, the Sith turned on the Empire and took over. Emperor Fel went into exile and now the "Empire in Exile" teams with the GFFA Remnant to try and stop the Empire as led by the Sith.
I know there was the Jedi Order of what was left of the GFFA, and Imperial Knights for the new Empire. Who was Krayt? I vaguely remember some talk around here about him being Jacen Solo.
Krayt = A'sharad Hett = Human Jedi from the Clone Wars era and was raised by Tusken Raiders whose father was a Jedi.

No, Krayt is that Jedi, Tusken Raider, Sith, ninja, stunt driver from the Clone Wars era(?).
The Empire became the major ruling authority under the Fel family (So yes, Jaina is involved indirectly), and the Galactic Remnant is what is left of the New Republic. The Empire, post ROTJ, and the New Republic basically swapped positions.

Then of course, and no one could have saw this coming, The Empire made a deal with Krayt and the Sith and *gasp* they betrayed them, and are now in control of the majority of the Empire and Coruscant.

Oh yeah, the Sith exterminated the Jedi Order...again.

So what's the disposition of the Alliance remnant and the Fel loyalists relative to the Sith? ARR-style insurgency? Clone Wars 50/50 split, or more like the Imperial remnant after losing Coruscant, with the Sith-dominated Empire enjoying clear supremacy but the Alliance still having an extensive industrial base?

The Sith basically and literally took the throne. Those in the upper echelons of power that were not killed, serve the Sith out of fear or just not caring who is giving them orders. The Sith don't seem to really have any plans or goals outside of just being in control, so the status quo hasn't really been upset that much.
The Emperor seems to have a small, but significant following that is loyal to him, while the rest are loyal to the 'office'. Fel seems to control several key systems and has the loyalty of the Imperial Knights, who are maybe the only new and interesting part of the book, but they are pretty boring themselves.

I actually stopped getting the comic because it was boring me and I just don't like the artwork so I'm not entirely up to date. Others can fill out what I have missed, forgotten or never got.

What's wrong with Jan Duursema's artwork? I think she's one of the best artists to have worked on a Star Wars comic. Brian Ching is pretty good too. (of course, there's the classic Al Williamson who did the comic strip which Dark Horse compiled together in three TPB volumes)

Legacy is pretty much a reboot of the franchise, although LucasFilm isn't quite so admitting it.

The novels are pretty much a sham anyway. Like a bloated dead corpse that is still kicking by sheer lack of will.

The system was stable until Palpatine went and destabilized it. After that, all bets were off and the ensuing power vacuum created so many major players that there was no possibility of galactic reunification.

It does seem like that's what they're trying to do, as it has all the essential elements of what Star Wars was originally: Evil Empire in charge, good guys outgunned, Jedi on the ropes, etc.

The Old Republic was pretty much rotten without any involvement from Palpatine. Simple inertia pushed the things forward. By the way Natalie Portman brilliantly played the hollow, ignorant jerk (although the writer's and the director's original intention was slightly different  ) typical in the OR elite.

They've pretty much been trying to reboot the series since the NJO/Swarm War arcs. The Legacy comics are trying to reboot, the LOTF series was an attempt at a reboot of the Anakin Skywalker storyline... The only reason they don't come out and admit it

I disagree. When you get single authors doing duologies/trilogies or writing standalone novels, they turn out pretty well. It's just when they try the large multi-novel arcs that involve multiple authors (NJO, LOTF, etc.) that things fall apart.

They also run into trouble when they try straying too far beyond the scope of the core material (which we can basically think of as the "framework" for the universe") - If they confined themselves to telling stories in the universe they have (which we get some of the more enjoyable novels doing I should piont out) things owuld be relatively etter (Hell, they can get MUCH more play out of the prequel timelines.)

Another, albeit minor point is that they keep reusing the same characters, species, planets etc simply to make them recognizable to readers. Stories do not require Luke n Co to be Star Wars anymore.

Note that got rectonned to 1000 years. so apparently the 25K republic had its rough spots as well . Honestly, given the scope, technologicla and manufacturing capability of the empire and the plethora of destructive stuff available one has to wonder just how the galaxy lasted for 25,000 years at all.

One possiblity is the Jedi were a huge factor there. The Clone Wars era Republic had a mere 10,000 Jedi, and you could clearlry argue that they were having trouble keeping a handle on things and were in decline. Its quite possible that the Jedi were far more numerous in the past, and thus able to retain the stability of the Republic. But the Empire pretty much disrupted that pattern, and the subsequent iterations of the Jedi order never seemed to recover (the Luke's order never got to triple digits as I recall, did it?)

Hang on, the Old Republic now only lasted for 1000 years? Where does that leave the Naga Sadow/Exar Kun/etc Sith Wars from 5000/4000 BBY? Are they cut out entirely?

No the current incarnation of the OR is only 1000 years old. It still is over 25000 years old- it is just that they added a major political turnover at the 1000 year mark.

I thought that tied in with the last Jedi/Sith war and the Ruusan Reformation which led to the demilitarized Republic and pussified Jedi Order seen in the prequels.
So I stare wistfully at the Lightning for a couple of minutes. Two missiles, sharply raked razor-thin wings, a huge, pregnant belly full of fuel, and the two screamingly powerful engines that once rammed it from a cold start to a thousand miles per hour in under a minute. Life would be so much easier if our adverseries could be dealt with by supersonic death on wings - but alas, Human resources aren't so easily defeated.

It did, at least to some extent. The Jedi gave up their armor, if I recall correctly.

The problem is to make new material "compelling" authors have added galactic crisis after crisis. To say the 25,000 Republic had its share of disasters (and survived) is one thing; giving the New Republic and Galactic Alliance disaster after disaster, leaving them with barely a few years of peace undermines what the heroes tried to do in the original trilogy. I have a soft spot for comic Legacy - the force ruled, neither light nor dark Fel Empire seems interesting enough but in general I prefer what Zahn was trying to do at the end of the Hand of Thrawn duology - move the action into the Unknown Regions.

The Republic also had a sort of Secretary of War position that had traditionally been held by a Jedi Warlord with lesser Warlords acting as the Generals & Admiralty of the Republic Armed Forces, positions that were entirely abolished. The Jedi were moved over to be under and derive their authority from the Judicial Department, as with everything else that remained from the all but completey dissolved RAF.
