the Comittee's website wrote: "The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."
Personally, I'd have preferred some prosecuted dissident or NGO.

Well good job on the peace prize. I thought he was going to win the Chemistry Nobel for his discovery of Hopeium. But I'm sure Peace will suit him just fine.
Besides is this not the biggest backhanded slap for Bush the younger. Obama's been in office less then a year yet he's already in a few short months do so much more to increase world peace because of how much he fucked it up.

US President Barack Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.
The Nobel Committee said he was awarded it for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".
There were a record 205 nominations for this year's prize. Zimbabwe's prime minister and a Chinese dissident had been among the favourites.
The laureate - chosen by a five-member committee - wins a gold medal, a diploma and 10m Swedish kronor ($1.4m).
"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the Norwegian committee said as the prize was announced.
"His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."
As you can see, the Beeb has it as well.
I'm surprised Morgan Changari didnt get it, considering the crap he's gone through in the last year or so and the slight improvments starting to occur in Zimbabwe

Some stories are also citing his attempts at nuclear reduction, nuclear disarmament, and nuclear non-proliferation, which would make sense as the modern version of the Nobel Peace Prize's original intents: promoting world peace, cooperation between nations, and reduction of standing armies.

That's what I'm looking forward to Will some conservative talk show hosts get heart attacks while ranting about the decision ?

It's not April Fool's Day in Norway is it? The USA hasn't been this polarized since the Civil War and he's thrown every one of our allies under the bus, cozied up to our enemies, dissed the Israelis and the Hondurans, and become the laughing stock of the world....I have more respect for a fall-down drunk...at least they stand the chance of sobering up one day....Obama is hopeless.
Help us. Someone please help us. This is a discrace.
Just another in a long line of similarities to Jimmy Carter. I don't quite understand how you get a nobel prize for selling the country you are supposed to be leading down the river but congrats. Maybe he will give his prize to help pay back the taxpayers for the spamulus bill.
What a crock of $hit. Right up there with Al Gore.
What you can expect conservatives to do is say how liberal and self serving the Nobel committee is, and that it all means absolutely nothing in the end.
"Remember, Yassir Arafat got the Nobel Prize, and what a deserving fellow he was. Not to mention Jimmy Carter, The Worst President in Modern Times (TM)."
That will be followed by lots of bloviating on how he has earned his "peace" by sacrificing American security to the likes of Russia - via US missile withdrawal from Poland and the Czech Republic - and to Iran for having not bombed them yet and to the terrorists. Just because. He's not making decisions on Afghanistan fast enough apparently. Conservatives will buy it hook, line, and sinker, because peace and good relations with the rest of the world are not what we should strive for. Rather, we need to command respect and be strong, and shit all over the faces of those who don't move to our rhythm.
I don't want so say that Obama does not deserve this - because he does - but i think it's a bit too early. I mean, he did not even finish his first year yet, and none of his decisions had time to make a long-term impact.
Once could complain that it is a "political decision" - and i think it is, and i approve of it.

And increasing fast
Too many those conservatives has no idea how much the world hates them.
Humans are such funny creatures. We are selfish about selflessness, yet we can love something so much that we can hate something.
This seems a little premature to me, surely most of Obama's short time in office so far have been spent trying to work out internal US problems like the economy and health care? His stance on nuclear disarmament, talks with Russia etc.... look promising - but surely you get the prize for results, not good intentions?
I mean, let's say he's wildly successful and in a few years we end up in a world with few or even no nuclear weapons, and it's all thanks to his diplomatic perseverance and abilities... what are they going to do then, give him the prize again?
It is a sad day, almost as bad as 9/11. Obama winning the nobel peace prize would be a joke if it wasn't so tragic. I cryed on 9/11 and am crying today. The nobel peace prize means nothing. The committee has to be on drugs or paid alot of money. Obama has only traveled abroard and put down America at every chance he gets? Obama has done nothing but promote the Muslims. Are we so lost that this happens. I am already stressed out and now this. It is a sad day for America. God help us.
I'mma let you finish but...
Seriously this is way to soon. He didn't really do anything significant. Is Nobel Peace Prize handed out yearly? Because maybe there simply wasn't any competition.
But if the forces of evil should rise again, to cast a shadow on the heart of the city.

For one, palestinians and israelis have gained peace prizes without getting permanent middle eastern peace. Barack Obama just by being Not A Republican has done more for international cooperation and brotherhood between nations than anyone else. Let alone that he actually has done a lot to repair Russian-American relations, European-American relations, and is probably one of the foremost American politicians involved in nuclear disarmament in the modern day.
But I don't care. I'm loving this just for the QQing conservatives vandalising Wikipedia changing the reason to "For being a black man elected to president", "for being a nigger", and "because of political correctness.", and the people on the Fox News comments freaking out and saying "Help us. Someone please help us." (which is stopping short of saying "Will no one rid white america of this troublesome president?") and "Oh god it's 9/11 all over again, Obama's helping the muslims."

It is, but it is not (necessarily) given out for actions in the year it is given out - in fact, it is quite often given out for research/actions that is decades old - see our current physics nobel prize.

Also, if Ghandi doesn't get a nobel peace prize, why should Reagan of all people? Even if we pretend the Republican Messiah Who Caused World Peace (by turning russia into a third world nation) image of Reagan is actually true and he wasn't the worst president since Wilson. A Nobel Peace Prize isn't given to every single person who does something good.
It´s quite clear from these moronic comments on Fox News Bounty posted and linked to that when these conservative idiots say "world peace" they actually mean "American dominance".
This just seems really strange and premature, especially considering that the US is still involved in two major conflicts with Obama just recently having declared that US military forces aren't going to be withdrawn from Afghanistan in the foreseeable near future. What's even stranger is that the nomination for the Nobel prizes were put in several months ago (with the deadline being February 1, 11 days into Obama's presidency). I think it would be best if he declined it.
He'd probably get accused of being arrogant if he rejected it. Then again he'll be accused of being uppity arrogant either way, so he should probably do whichever he likes.
Oh come on. As Bean pointed out the Man has been in office less than a year. This is way, way too early for him to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize based upon an objective study of the effects of his Administration.
Hell, poor Jimmy Carter had to wait over 20 years for his Peace Prize, and even then it was just a backhanded insult to Bush. Just like this.
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."
So what happen's now when Obama sends the troops into somewhere? Or if he abandons his big international dreams (like many American presidents do after a few years when they start getting hamstrung by domestic battles)?
The degree of stupid in giving a serving leader of the USA a Nobel prize when he might be in office for 7 more years is incredible. That he's not actually done much in that time is worse. The jury should be hung, if only because they haven't got a clue about diplomacy, international politics or common sense. Zimbabwe's Prime Minister would be a much more credible choice, if nothing else to acknowledge his personal courage in standing up to Mugabe and his thugs and trying to restore one of Africas once-shining jewels back to a reasonable state. But even then I'd disagree that someone still in office should get should an award, its too potentially insulting to political opponents and too questionable given the potential for future screw-ups.
Also, is the award meant to given based on achievements up to the nomination date, or can post-nomination achievements be included as well?
This just reinfornces my low opinion of Nobel Peace Prizes. He's been in office less than a year has done basically jack shit other than given a bunch of speeches and has accomplished basicallly nothing other than explode the deficit and continue the financial ruin of the country.
I guess not being Bush and some flowery rhetoric is the only criteria the Nobel commitee is looking for these days, they must have swalled the HOPECHANGE pill and not looked at what his actual accomplishments to date are.
