GOP Reps Seek Muslim Spy Probe

Post by Metatwaddle »

A group of House Republicans is calling for an investigation into whether a leading American Muslim advocacy group tried to "spy" on congressional offices by placing interns on key security committees.

Rep. Sue Myrick, North Carolina Republican, cited an internal January 2007 memo in which the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) discussed placing Muslim interns on Capitol Hill to "focus on influencing congressmen responsible for policy that directly impacts the American Muslim community."

CAIR said it had a particular interest in influencing the judiciary, intelligence and homeland security committees.

The memo was unearthed by David Gaubatz and Paul Sperry, authors of a book titled "Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That's Conspiring to Islamize America." Mrs. Myrick, a founder of the House Anti-Terrorism Caucus, wrote a forward for the book and was given an advance copy. A CAIR spokesman, dismissing the Wednesday morning Capitol Hill news conference as "a book launch for Muslim bashers," said the memo constitutes stolen property, as it was obtained by the son of an author who posed undercover inside the advocacy group.

"They had a spy in our organization for months, stole our property and the most they can come up with is that we placed interns on Capitol Hill? I wish we had placed more interns," spokesman Ibrahim Hooper cq said. He added that the group has filed a police report on the matter.

"Muslims are interested in international affairs, civil rights, civil liberties, First Amendment issues, freedom of religion, so it's natural they'd be interested in certain committees," he said.

Mrs. Myrick and Republican Reps. John Shadegg of Arizona, Paul Broun of Georgia and Trent Franks of Arizona called Wednesday for an investigation by the House sergeant-at-arms into whether CAIR was successful in planting congressional interns.

"If an organization that is connected to or supports terrorists is running influence operations or planting spies in key national security-related congressional offices, I think this needs to be made known," Mr. Broun said.

CAIR, which calls itself "America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization," has a history of controversy. The Justice Department labeled the organization as an "unindicted co-conspirator" in the trial of the Holy Land Foundation, a group that was convicted last year of funding the Palestinian militant Islamist group Hamas.
Link (Washington Times, I know, sorry)

This is a pretty normal thing for political interest groups to do. Everyone does this if they think they have enough young students and enough contacts to place said students on Capitol Hill. It's hard to imagine how you get from that to allegations of "spying" or a book called "Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That's Conspiring to Islamize America," like Gaubatz and Sperry did. I suspect the investigation won't go anywhere. It's the House; people get these weird bugs up their ass there all the time. Still, it's depressing to know that this paranoid 2002-era bullshit hasn't gone away.

There's an excellent blog post on this by Glenn Greenwald, which is where I got the Washington Times link.
Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. Hardly surprising when you got people like FL congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite pointing out that "...all terrorists are Muslim." Well, I guess it counts for something that she managed to admit Timothy McVeigh as an exception.

Completely forgetting about the Basques and IRA though, both of whom killed far more Europeans than Al-Qaida ever will.

Wow. I couldn't believe she got all huffy with the interviewer and told him the KKK weren't terrorists and how dare he compare the KKK to the real (brown) terrorists. I only wish he'd had the presence of mind to say, "Yeah, I guess you're right: the Klan really isn't that bad."

At the end of the video, the anchor briefly mentioned some little kerfuffle between Brown-Waite and CAIR, the Muslim civil rights group that Myrick and the other reps are trying to "investigate". I wonder what that was about.

And doesn't the latter already have their own represenitves, or at least one political dynasty that used to fund/support them actively.

Why do the Jews and Christians get their own right groups yet Muslims aren't allowed any? So hypocritical.

I dunno about political dynasties, but Joe Bloggs Irish American donated money towards the IRA. Of course, they were actually freedom fighters, since no red blooded American would dream of donating money to support terrorists.

How about Senator Joseph Kennedy sending money and actual weapons to support the 1914 risings.

Exactly. It just boggles the mind how little the typical conservatard remembers about the 1980s Afghanistan war. If you really want to make their heads explode, show them that scene in Charlie Wilson's War where a (fat, old, and white) American congressman is in an afghan refugee camp chanting Allah ackbar alongside the fanatics.

Well, in all fairness, the Easter Rising wasn't really terrorism; the people who took part had the balls to try a stand up fight, instead of planting bombs in war memorials and rubbish bins like the IRA, and that was something that payed off for them in the end. Moreover, they weren't the IRA, they were the Irish Republican Brotherhood, who were a distinct and earlier organisation with a clear history traceable back to the United Irishmen of the 1798 rebellion, through the Repeal Movement and the Young Ireland movement that sprang from that. The IRA don't.

The one constant, pretty much, is that all of these Irish insurrectionist and terrorist movements have drawn a large amount of funding from the US.
