What about a day to celebrate Nikola Tesla, the genius, visionary, saint, friend-to-children and hero of the 20th century who pioneered AC electricity??Admiral Valdemar wrote:Darwin day would be cool, I have no idea how God day came to be, was that the day he was born or died or what?!
Newton, Einstein or Hawking day would be cool.

Fine, then every God day, I'll piss on a crucifix in the middle of the quad and distribute atheist literature.neoolong wrote:Some people want March 3 to be made God Day.AdmiralKanos wrote:There's a God day?neoolong wrote: Wouldn't it be better to replace God Day then?

Haven't we already got multiple God days? 25 Dec, for one?!
I have to add this Happy Birthday Darwin!!!!!
It's already a holiday in certain communities: I'm going to see the Reduced SC tonight, so I'm missing his birthday party at the NHM.

3 threes. Trinity. That's almost clever.neoolong wrote:Something about it being first celebrated on 03-03-03. I don't really know why though.

Thus the urgency. Though there's also 2033. That would kinda ruin the symmetry, though.neoolong wrote:Of course it'll only happen once. In their lifetimes.RedImperator wrote:3 threes. Trinity. I say we do a "Scientific Achievment Day", where we celebrate scientists such as Newton and Einstein, or an "Intellegence Day" where morons have to stay indoors and smart people can parade in the streets.

While Columbus did not behave in the best of ways, to say the least, the term "mass murdering asshole" seems a bit too strong.AdmiralKanos wrote:Einstein Day would be cool. They should really replace Columbus Day with a holiday which celeberates someone who's not a mass-murdering asshole.
He personally did not commit any mass murders. Those who followed him, yes, but not Columbus himself.

Wrong analogy. Columbus did not mass murder any natives. Neither did he order his men to mass murder them. Enslave them and take their gold, yes, but not mass murder them. He had no way to know that the conquistadores sent by Spain would totally fuck up the American civilizations.Temjin wrote:While Hitler did not behave in the best of ways, to say the least, the term "mass murdering asshole" seems a bit too strong.fgalkin wrote:While Columbus did not behave in the best of ways, to say the least, the term "mass murdering asshole" seems a bit too strong.AdmiralKanos wrote:Einstein Day would be cool. Actually, and I could be wrong, I remember reading somewhere that Columbus taxed the natives very heavily. Of those who could not pay, he chopped the hands of them and let them bleed to death.fgalkin wrote:Wrong analogy. Again I could be wrong since I'm not 100% sure of my information source. (I got it out of Uncle John's Bathroom Reader).
I apoligize if I'm wrong, but I'm not sure I am.

Well, even if you're right, chooping off natives' hands does not constitute mass murder, which would be genocide.Temjin wrote:Actually, and I could be wrong, I remember reading somewhere that Columbus taxed the natives very heavily. The conquistadores were committing genocide. Columbus was not. While I don't claim that he was a nice person in any way, or that the term "asshole" can not be applied to him, "mass murdering asshole" should be reserved for people who actually deserve it.
Have a very nice day.

O_o Yes, it would... How is murdering them by chooping off their head different from another way?fgalkin wrote:Well, even if you're right, chooping off natives' head's does not constitute mass murder, which would be genocide.

Are you sure the term "mass murdering" only applies to genocide? I thought it could apply to murdering only a few hundred.fgalkin wrote:Well, even if you're right, chooping off natives' head's does not constitute mass murder, which would be genocide.

And yes, mass murder is simply murdering multiple people.

It is applied to murder for the sake of murder, i.e. genocide, or its smaller versions, i.e pogroms. Columbus's goal was to get as much gold as possible, not to kill as many natives as possible. Even if he killed people by the hundered (which I'm not sure he did), he did it for a reason different than murder for the sake of murder.Temjin wrote:Are you sure the term "mass murdering" only applies to genocide? I was gonna mention him too but forgot, many people still think he was a screwball hence why most mad scientists in media are portrayed much like Tesla worked.Simon H.Johansen wrote:What about a day to celebrate Nikola Tesla, the genius, visionary, saint, friend-to-children and hero of the 20th century who pioneered AC electricity??Admiral Valdemar wrote:Darwin day would be cool, I have no idea how God day came to be, was that the day he was born or died or what?!
