Historian's Note: While certainly entertaining to some degree, the favored story of the exiling of the Herzog von Reagan and his family - with numerous loyal servants, officers, courtiers, and various Germans seeking to flee the horror of the 30 Year War - being the result of the Baron spurning the advances of the Emperor's wife is considered a historical myth by serious scholarship. Most historians believe the von Reagans were scapegoated for a defeat against the forces of Gustavus Adolphus and the Habsburg Emperor, aware of the von Reagans' loyalty, sponsored and helped pay for their movement to Spain and then on to Mexico, where the Viceroyalty of New Spain chose to use the German immigrants to settle the open lands of California.

Shroom - my empire currently views the Reagans (no matter their background) as valuable partners.

I am working on the background of the Empire, but basically, this is what I have:

NOTE: Fin, Shady, Stas, Baerne, Steve, please look over it and give me your okay.

Spoiler
- Instead of Wilhelm II, Friedrich III. survives his cancer due to Bismarck recommending Morell Mackenzie, who does not misdiagnose his cancer (deviation of OTL here).
- This leaves Bismarck and Friedrich III. longer in charge and prevent much of the diplomatic quagmires.
- When Wilhelm II. takes the throne after Friedrich dies in 1895, Bismarck is in a much stronger position and WIlhelm II. does not dare challenge him. Bismarck also masterfully placates the Kaiser with a token colonial policy and a more serious naval armament race, but diplomacy does much to smoothe the feelings. After all, Bismarck and the two Victorias trust each other deeply (in the OTL, only the english queen victoria did, in this TL both do due to him saving the Emperor).
- careful diplomacy prevents any sort of isolation of Germany, Bismarck dies in 1989, leaves Protege in charge
- 1914: Franz Ferdinand is assassinated in Sarajevo
- Austria goes to war. Germany hangs back, sees what happens.
- Balkan insurrection engulfes the Austrian Empire in civil war, Byzantine Empire and Italy (Kingdom of Italy, meaning Rome and northern Italy) supply arms to insurrectionists. In 1915 Austria is close to fragmentation.
- End of 1915: Germany finally acts after signing a non-interference pact with Russia. German troops march into the Austrian Empire in small detachements, beating back insurrectionists. Germany is not committed to the fight yet.
- New Year 1915: Vienna Massacre. The Austrian Emperor along with the majority of the Austrian leadership/nobility are killed when a massive bomb destroys the concert hall of the Neujahrskonzert. The Kaiser's eldest son is killed, Wilhelm II. severely injured. The Bomb is later found to have been a collaboration of Italian design and anarchists. Austria collapses.
- 1916: Germany declares war on Italy and marches into Austria.
- May 1916: German troops take Venice. July: Battle of Turin - Italian army is decisively beaten, encircled. French troops who try to intervene turn back when faced with German numerical superiority.
- August 1916: Faced with threatening Byzantine, French and Russian intervention, who try to prevent the creation of a german superstate, Germany agrees to a ceasefire.
- January 1917: Treaty of Rome with the following results:
a) Balkans gain independence (Shady, that would be your nation)
b) The Kingdom of Italy is destroyed. Germany gains northern Italy (as outlined above), though it does only claim it to prevent France and the Byzantine Empire from capitalizing on the collapse of Italy.
c) The rest of the Austrian Empire is absorbed into Germany as the children of Karl I. of Austria are not old enough. They are placed in the household of Wilhelm II.
d) The Papal State become independent once again and is guarenteed non-interference by both the German and Byzantine Empires.

In the following years up to 1925 this happens:

- As the German Kaiser is a Protestant, he cannot lay claim to the thrones of Austria and Hungary. This leads to the bizarre solution of him being named Reichsverweser. The full title of the Kaiser will therefore be: Wilhelm II., Deutscher Kaiser, König von Preußen, Reichsverweser von Österreich und Ungarn. The situation is further confounded by the children of Karl I, who are the rightful heirs to the austrian part of the new empire and will be old enough in the 1930s to maybe claim the throne. Although the titles of the empire are not integrated, the rest of the empire is already closely integrated and it should be viewed as a single nation, though the hungarian/italian parts are not so smitten by the situation. The Chancellor is the deciding figure as the Kaiser never really recovered from the bombing and as the Reichstag is elected by the whole of the empire and not dependant on titles.

I said the Balkans, now I will clarify what I actually had in mind. Spoiler
I want to claim the following parts of the Balkans (Those who want something can argue with me over it, be careful though, I bite. :P):
Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania and Greece. My Empire will be called the Balkan Federation, and yes, it will be a communist state. Something like a larger version of the SFRY, but with more awesome in it. :D That's pretty much all the thought I put in it until now. I've been busy and couldn't decide if I wanted to take the communist route again(still not sure), but this should make things easier for you guys.

Thanas, this means I'm cool with your proposed history - just as long as it acknowledges the formation of the Communist Balkan Federation in that time period.

So everyone cool with my Empire? Fin?

After talking with Rogue Ice a bit I'm thinking of being a former colony of his in West Africa; Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea, Ghana, tago, benin and parts of Nigeria are what I'm looking at right now. It should be interesting to put a fairly powerful state in this region. I'm thinking tech wouldn't be my strong point to start.....

So no competition for for Indonesia. For now :P .

Edit: The Cote de Ivoire really should be in that list too.

You mean the unequal Russian-Chinese treaties? Well, that's your choice to have a claim on those lands. Be aware there is a counterclaim, that's all. If your claim is upheld, there will be counterfactual history behind it and it won't be a "let's be buddies with the Russkies" one. I see there are other claims on that land as well. The game will be fun.
I wouldn't expect happy fun times. I'm pretty sure only Zor has another claim, and that to Sakhalin

Hey Ryan, if you're looking for people to invest in a Panama Canal, you probably shouldn't have "we'll lock anyone out at any time" clause. Lock anybody else out, but I think you'd need to (at at least) make an exception for your partners. Otherwise I can't see them bothering, but instead shopping around for somebody a bit less draconian.

Or paying his country a visit via a battlefleet and just take the canal. I will place the entire Kriegsmarine at the deposal for that task. Honestly, he wants to pay us for maintenance, but maintains the canal is his property and also wants to have a lock out clause?

Hey Shady, I like your ambition but frankly a Byzantine Empire without Greece would be weird. I don't see Fin letting you have Greece.

I'd suggest a border running from modern Albania to the Romanian-Bulgarian frontier. Bulgaria, Albania, and modern Macedonia are in the Empire as their northern frontier and to the north is the Socialist Balkan Federation (What's with you and being Communist anyway? And why would Germany prop up such a government I ponder? But whatever, I'm sleep deprived again....).

Now I need to hammer out a new North America history with Wilkens, Rogue, and Bean. Maybe the French player too.
