Jon Stewart hits Fox for ignoring gay rights march after aggressively promoting 9/12 March.
During the tea party protests and the more recent 9/12 march, Fox News argued that it was justified in covering them incessantly because the network doesn’t “pick and choose these rallies and protests” — it covers them all. At the same time, it slammed other networks for not giving enough coverage to the right-wing rallies. But as Jon Stewart noted on The Daily Show last night, Fox ignored the weekend’s National Equality March, whose turnout was comparable to the 9/12 March. “You didn’t even send your own camera crew?” exclaimed Stewart. “You have a Washington bureau! Tell them to go to the window and point the camera down!”
Stewart also pointed out that Fox was more than happy to get out the tv cameras and an on-air reporter to cover an empty sidewalk where there had apparently been a protest about students singing a pro-Obama song. (HT: Andrew Sullivan and Raw Story)
Jon Stewart pwns Fox again.
It appears the coverage on the other networks was also fairly weak. I don't know how someone can claim there is a "liberal bias" in the media with a straight face.

On that note, Fox's utter fail here was quite amusing. "Here is where the protest took place" followed by an empty field... that could have been literately any suburb ever. If we were willing to credit them with any brains, it may have been deliberate; "Look out, this could happen to you!"

You don't even have to send anyone out for those, just accept the live feed
AFAIK FOX Broadcasting (i.e. the programming network, not FNC) has declined to air several press conferences on their network, and end up making bank by being the only non-cable network with non-obama programming. I'm pretty sure Fox News still covers them, albeit in the usual Fox News manner....
Don't forget that the current administration does not like FOX News and makes it a point of purposefully snubbing them when it comes to, and who can blame them?

Uh. . .this has been going on ever since the primaries. Fox consistently lies about Obama's positions so he's stopped inviting them to press conferences.

Uh, no?
The only thing Obama did, was not go on Fox News for some time. Fox news is at press conferences. They even get to ask questions at them. Of course they then ask stupid idiotic nonsense questions, but they did get to ask...
It is a very recent thing that the Obama administration has started to specifically hit back against Fox News as a whole. Before that they simply ignored them.
Again, Fox News started this, the Obama administration is simply (finally!) reacting.
Is the line that the Whitehouse is taking counterproductive? Watching fox they are making themselves out to be be martyrs compareable to the big news people during the Nixon days. IMHO the Whitehouse needs to go on shows like Beck and O'Reilly and not to have a discussion but to absolutely destroy their arguments using alot of the stuff that has been like the Beck and healthcare thing.

Awesome idea. I'm sure that the borderline treasonous asshole who run the interviews would be more than willing to put up an interview that would shed them in anything less than a positive light, and not at all heavily edit said interviews to make Obama and Co. look like child-eating antichrists so that their fat, illiterate, and often racist base will just lap it up and whine louder.
No, the best way to deal with this is to ignore them. Let them scream and stomp their feet and make bigger idiots of themselves so that piece by piece, more people become embarrassed to be associated with them. They'll always have their rabid 33%, but treating them as a non-entity will help remove the rest, which is really the best anyone can hope for.

You can get around that by making the interview live I suppose they are the gov they can do that can't they??

It seems to me that they've been playing martyr for years. They were playing martyr even when Bush was in office, claiming that "the mainstream media" was out to get them. There's only so much you can worry about psychos crying wolf, even if some people are stupid enough to believe them.

Obama tried going on Fox before. He even got interviewed by O'Reilly. That buys about 5 minutes of goodwill, and then it's right back to the slander machine.

That's the funny thing about that whole 'freedom of speech' thing. It means that the government can't force the media to report things a certain way it the media doesn't want to. Sure, the mainstream did when Bush was in office, but that's because the Bush administration was more than willing to whore itself out to special interests, who likewise were already in bed with the media.

Also the Bush administration was much more heavy handed with the whole "access" thing. Say bad things about us? Then we won't call on you during news conferences nor will we go on your shows or send members of the administration either. After awhile it starts to hurt and they start sucking up because they lose viewers compared to the other networks. But then Bush had Fox which was loyal to him all the time. Unlike MSNBC which is just as eager to bash him over the head on their own issues like Maddow's & Gay rights or Olbermann and the Financial Sector or Ed & and the lack of torture prosecutions. Bush had Fox which was willing to get down in the mud so that he would not dirty his shoes.
MSNBC the best thing to a "left wing" network in America. And sad to say it has "brains" and aside from Hardball w/Chris Matthews if Obama went on any "liberal" show on MSNBC the host would be calling him to task for one reason or another not mindlessly waving the flag and yelling Hail Ceaser. And MSNBC gave a morning show to a man who stands a good chance of running in 2012 or 2016 against Obama or his successor (AKA Joe Scarborough)

So freedom of speach is one way? The government can't go to Fox we want to go on the Beck show but only if its live and we can bring our own props to the debate. It may not work for all the ~33% but what if it brought it down to 20%.

You misunderstand. The government's entirely free to do that. Likewise, Fox is entirely free to say, "Fuck off, you appear in a pre-recorded interview that we have the right to edit any way we want as outlined in this overly complex contract. If you don't, we'll continue to blatantly spin lies about you and encourage violence. Hell, we'll do that anyways!" What I'm saying is that the government can't *make* Fox give an interview to their (the government's) standards.

Hitting back is the best and smartest thing they can do.
Look at how successful the Republicans have been with constantly (mostly falsely) accusing the mainstream media as being liberal. The media reacted (and reacts) by constantly trying to prove that they aren't liberal, thereby giving conservative right wing thought a lot more influence than they should have considering the political realities in the US. Even the most extreme liberal TV station MSNBC has Joe Scarborough on it. Only their evening commentary shows are liberal. The rest is just as conservative as the other TV stations.
As long as Fox is treated as a normal TV station, their right wing extremist idiocy gets way too much coverage. Constantly hitting them as a Republican/right wing propaganda station might actually start getting people to recognize them as being such. In addition, treating them as the propaganda station they are means being prepared for their bullshit when you do decide to go on there.
So, no the line the White House has finally taken in regards to Fox News is not counterproductive - it is way overdue. Now the rest of the Democrats have to do the same thing.
