Activists call for Ban on Halloween Costume

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Immigrant rights activists are calling on U.S. retailers to stop selling two controversial "Illegal Alien" costumes that have surfaced for Halloween, saying the outfits are a broadside attack on illegal immigrants.
The "Illegal Alien" costume was being offered by retailers including Target, Walgreens and Amazon.com.

The "Illegal Alien Adult Costume," manufactured by Forum novelties, includes an orange jumpsuit, similar to prison garb, with "Illegal Alien" stamped in black across the chest; a space alien mask; and a fake Green Card. The "Illegal Alien Mask with Hat" also includes a space alien mask, this time with a dark handlebar mustache and a baseball cap.

The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles said it began receiving e-mails from concerned legal immigrants on Friday. In response, CHIRLA wrote a letter asking several retailers, including Target, Walgreens, and Amazon.com, to stop offering the costume.

As of Saturday afternoon, Target had pulled the products, and some links to the costumes on other sites were no longer functional.

Target said the "Illegal Alien" costume was inadvertently uploaded to its Web site due to a data entry error.

"It is never our intent to offend the consumers with the products we offer," a company statement said.

The makers of the costumes could not be reached for comment on Saturday.

Jorge-Mario Cabrera, the director of communications for CHIRLA, said he initially thought the costume was a stab at harmless satire. But when he saw the Green Card, he realized it was an swipe at illegal immigrants.

"This was an ignorant attempt to poke fun at a small community," said Cabrera.

Political satire and Halloween often merge. Costumes depicting former well-known political figures are often seen along side those depicting Batman or Wonder Woman.

To some, the attempted humor of the costumes falls flat.

Guillermo Iglesias said both of his parents were illegal immigrants in the United States. He felt the costumes were offensive because they depicted illegal immigrants as "not one of us."

"I have a lot of illegal immigrant friends," said Iglesias. "If I showed them that costume, it would really hurt them."

Despite the controversy, some stores say the costumes have been a hit.

"It's a very well-recommended costume," said an employee at Ricky's, a costume store in New York City. The store has sold seven costumes for $39.99 apiece and is set to receive another shipment.

William Gheen, the president of Americans for Legal Immigration, said he intends to buy the costume, and calls the reaction unfounded.

"The only people getting upset are the hyper-sensitive, over-politically correct, pro-amnesty, illegal alien-supporting nuts," said Gheen. "You can't attack people's freedom in this country."

"I think having a costume like that is distasteful," said Andrea Hill, outside of Ricky's. "But if it's not illegal, I think it's alright for them to sell it."

I think the costume's amusing, myself. I don't see why they're all throwing a fit, unless they really are "hyper-sensitive, over-politically correct ... nuts".

I find the pun amusing, but I can see how some people would be upset by it.

Its OK to dress up as a murderer or a US Soldier, but a joke costume about immigrants and aliens is bad. Whatever.

How dare this costume company exploit the common stereotype that illegal aliens are inhuman entities from space... oh wait.

I was expecting a lot worse. At my school, we had some trouble with really fucking racist costumes a couple of years back: a co-ed honors fraternity got into trouble when a couple of people came to a Cinco de Mayo-themed party in janitor's outfits, with "Spic" and "Span" written on the backs of them. This seems a little tame in comparison.

It's obviously not illegal to sell the costumes. But it's not a violation of constitutional rights for a bunch of private citizens to put pressure on the costume manufacturers to stop producing the thing, either, which is why I think the "You politically correct nuts are attacking our FREEDOM!" people are off base as well.
Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things... their number is negligible and they are stupid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower

Hah, this reminds me of a costume sold by "Kaufhaus X" ten or so years ago. It was titled "Neger" and consisted of a loincloth, a bad afro wig, black skin paint and most important, a nacklace made out of plastic bananas. Probably the most racist thing i´ve seen in my life.

The thread title is a bit misleading. They aren't actually calling for a legal ban; they're just trying to get stores to pull products they find offensive: something that overzealous special interest groups do all the time.

I can see the version with the hat and mustache being in bad taste, but I've definitely seen worse cases. A guy I used to work with was a bit of a secondhand store nut and one year he managed to find a nearly complete SS officer's uniform. Come that Halloween a local theatre group was putting on a play and they invited the audience to attend in costume. Well, my coworker really should have read what the play was about first before attending. Turns out it was about Jews living in wartime Germany.

"Overzealous" is the word, IMHO. This is a case of just a silly play-with-words. or pun, if you will, with the words "illegal" and "alien" in it. It has nothing to do with the people commonly referred to as "illegal aliens" in the US. It's just an alien who happens to have snuck illegally into the country. I doubt most people wouldn't find that chuckle-worthy, at least.

I, -myself, as a Mexican- am not the least bit offended. Besides, we are difficult to characterise, since we come in many flavours, and most of us don't even look like what the stereotype would have you believe.

EDIT: Okay, there's at least one person there who is a Mexican from American origin.

That's actually a pretty funny costume.

Really?
...really?
I think that the costume concept is funny as hell. Especially with the mustache. I can understand these people having the right to protest it, but they need to lighten up and get a life...there's genuinely offensive material, and there's just plain silly.
