What annoyed me about reversing in Far Cry 2 was that the damn mudskipper fans prevented you from looking directly behind you. What bullshit was that?

Warsow has a dodge thing, similar to UT.
A lot of the games don't really have a specific "dodge" move but have a rich enough movement system so that the end result is pretty much the same thing. Mr Bean mentioned Natural Selection, and while I guess he didn't count the movement abilities Aliens have as "dodge moves", they give enough of a speed boost that they have the dual purpose of closing the distance and evading fire. Even Marines get some tricks (or if you prefer, exploits - the point is that they exist) that make them harder to hit.

Not sure how that counts as 'dive to the side', but hey. FC2 already has a slide to cover move; that's not what I'm talking about.
And Hots are you saying you can't see out the back of boats? LOL

Not the ones with the fans in the back, at least from the driving position. What's wrong with me doc? How long do I have to live?Stark wrote:Not sure how that counts as 'dive to the side', but hey. FC2 already has a slide to cover move; that's not what I'm talking about.

I know it's not strictly a shooter, but I just began playing Mirror's Edge, and the whole first-person perspective feels immersive so far (so far being the tutorial and the first level, give me time to get to the bad parts), and your ability to see your own feet, or how the character's hands show onscreen to give you positional cues do help with the whole body awareness, you can even use your targetting system to swing your head around in a way, wich is the greatest limitation of regular FPS in that regard.Stark wrote:I get the impression you almost exclusively play competitive twitch shooters. It is true that people seem to dislike anything that isn't 'camera on a stick' Doom-style viewpoint, but I love games with body awareness that do cool things with your viewpoint.SPC Brungardt wrote:Or you stay 1st person the whole time and maybe you see your arms brace yourself to the ground for an instance as you scramble to get back on your feet. I suppose this is where motion-sickness occurs? I'm not familiar with a game that does this so I don't know how bad it looks.
Actually, Ace's post makes me think this comes back to the same reason most games don't have climbing - people are just too used to camera on a stick. People complain that reversing is hard in FC2 because you have to look out the back window of your car... just like when you actually reverse.
Appart from gamer inertia and fear of new things, it is entirely possible to have such moves in a game, even if you stay in first person mode, I guess it's easier to churn out standard FPSeses than try for something new?
And about camera switching, R6V has a lot of that when taking cover, but it's not as distracting as one might have guessed. I'd even go so far as to say that it works pretty well, although I would've liked if they had a toggleable option to stick to first person view always, you know, for immersion's sake.

Re: Do any first person shooter have 'evasive' moves?
Yeah, Mirror's Edge is built around body awareness. Various other games have it to various lesser degrees, but it doesn't seem popular. That's why I figure it's the 'wah wah motion sickness' brigade. It instantly makes various 'real' things far easier to balance instead of tacking it on and wondering why it doesn't fit UT3 playstyle.
In R6V the camera switching is implictly when you're not moving and safe (in cover). Evasive moves are going to be when you're implicitly moving and in danger. Especially if it changes aimpoint or perspective (which it probably will) this will not be welcome in such situations.
And Hots, the fans move so fast I can see straight through them... like a real fan. I don't understand how you can't see through them unless it's on fire.

He means, you can't turn your head while steering far enough to even look behind you. Ihav the same problem on PC. It's fucking annoying.

Press the 'look behind' button? I'm not at home so I can't check what it is. Just go change your keymaps.

Re: Do any first person shooter have 'evasive' moves?
If there is something which is never 'wrong' about Mirror's Edge, it's the camera. More first person games would do well to try and avoid the 'camera-on-a-stick' effect. For example, in The Darkness, Jackie actually has arms - if you walk into a wall, he will lift his arms up so he can get close, unlike with other games where you might just push the barrel of your gun into the wall.LordOskuro wrote:I know it's not strictly a shooter, but I just began playing Mirror's Edge, and the whole first-person perspective feels immersive so far (so far being the tutorial and the first level, give me time to get to the bad parts), and your ability to see your own feet, or how the character's hands show onscreen to give you positional cues do help with the whole body awareness, you can even use your targetting system to swing your head around in a way, wich is the greatest limitation of regular FPS in that regard.

I play on the PC, and no button or movement of the mouse does the trick.Stark wrote:Press the 'look behind' button? I'm not at home so I can't check what it is. Just go change your keymaps.

Whoa, really? I'd been laughing at the whole 'so hard to reverse' complaint, but I don't really look backwards beyond 'is there a man shooting machineguns at me'. I think the way you sit on the boats interferes with the freelook (since you're sitting sideways for some reason).
It boggles me there's no 'hold to look behind' button on PC.

Press both mouse buttons IIRC.

That was tons of fun when I introduced my LAN buddies to GRAW. I literally ran a countdown in my head for the moment when one of them would complain about the weapon dropping when standing right in front of a wall.Ford Prefect wrote:For example, in The Darkness, Jackie actually has arms - if you walk into a wall, he will lift his arms up so he can get close, unlike with other games where you might just push the barrel of your gun into the wall.
