Dumb parent, or dumber school?

Post by Zoink »

OK this was in an article in the Ottawa citizen:

A school in Canada has removed all references to the word "gun" from all tests. The action came in response to a complaint by a concerned parent who was *shocked* to see the word "gun" on her daughter's spelling test.

The parent's reasoning was that [paraphrase] "I don't see how anyone has any right to teach my daughter the word 'gun'" [/paraphrase]. She said that the word gun is synonymous with the word death. No reports on whether she thinks the word 'death' should be banned though....

Question #1: How dumb is this school?

Question #2: Could you actually make a moral argument that this parent has a right for her kid not to learn the word 'gun', or any other word for that matter? It would seem counter to the legal requirement for her to send her kid to school.

She is a moron and the principle of the schools isn't much better. Does she really expect that her kid will NOT learn the word 'gun' from somewhere else?

How? The kid is going to learn the word from somewhere. Does this parent also prevent the kid from watching TV and movies where guns are everywhere?

She is as thick as shit.

Ignorance breeds curiosity, in a few weeks her kid will be making napalm in the bath tub.

I wonder who she'll blame it on then? Her ignorant, bad parenting? Of course not, it must be someone elses fault...

The school is just mind-numbingly stupid for succumbing to this bull. The word is part of the English language, and there's no reasonable way to shield children from it. They might as well know what it means.

In fact, I would say that a school has a vested interest in kids knowing the meaning of the term. Otherwise, how can they be expected to publicize a policy that forbids students to bring guns to school? How can they give sensible education about how kids should respond if they find a gun lying in a ditch near their school or home?

The idiocy levels in this incident are positively depressing.

She is just trying to make some political point. So if gun is a synonymous with death, is her daughter not supposed to learn that word either. C'mon lady. How are they to teach her Canadian contributions to WW1 and WW2.

Under the parents "reasoning" no one has the right to teach her daughter a word that is synonymous with death. That means Cancer, AIDS and every other disease cannot be taught to her. In fact it means that the concept of Disease and age can't be taught either. In fact even starvation and dehydration cannot be taught under this form of "reasoning"
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

The solution would have been to put the daughter in a solitary room during class, that way no evil words could make it into that poor skull of hers.

That way, while everyone else graduated, she would have been spared from learning the word "gun". Of course afterwards her mother would have to ask herself why her daugher is the stupidest girl in the country.

Man, how old is that kid. Chances are she already knows about guns.

And, of course it's Canada. :D

Once again, I'm compelled to ask if this is a hoax. It just seems so stupid that it's like a fable planted by some conservative to embarass the PC crowd. And it's not like I think the PC crowd is a collction of Mensa members, either. It's just...too stupid to seem true (that's why it probably is).

It would have to be a REALLY big hoax. Front page Ottawa citizen. I found this:

Evidently the school is reconsidering the ban :)

If they want to ban 'gun' for it's connection to the word 'death,' should they then also ban the word 'life?'

This.... seems vaguely familar. Is there a distant relation here?

(pulled from the depths of the FUQ)
Spyda: Death toll from US high school shootings over the past 3 to 5 years: 69
Transcend: Shootings or "gun incidents"? Because they count a kid drawing a picture of a gun as a
"gun incident" now...
Me: Are you mentally retarded? Seriously. This isn't a insult it will determine how I debate you in
the future. And after you answer that question maybe you can tell us how can someone fatally draw a
picture of a gun?

I'd say the parent is beyond stupid for complaining, since her kid could learn the word from anyone, anywhere, and pehaps he already did. The school was probalby just doing what they thought would keep them out of trouble, since if she's messed up enough to complain about such a word, she'll pobably sue if her demands aren't met.

While we're removing "gun" from schools, why not rewrite History textbooks so they're free of violence?

I would think it would be banned because some parent is complaining that it sounds remotely like God, kind of like whoever complained about the word "niggardly" just because it sounded like a racial slur, even if it's not actually one.
