Didn't we see a close-up as it was detached? It surely wasn't thicker than 2cm, and I think rather less.

This is the best I can find at the moment. (slow work day) I don't now how you do the pixel = size thing, but I'm pretty sure someone here does.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

I always thought of that reaction as Vader being shocked when Luke jumped, not resigned.TC Pilot wrote:There's also the bit immediately after Luke jumps where Vader just lets his hand drop, which I interpret more as resigned failure than any kind of rage. To be honest, I think this is a byproduct of the PT, where "Angry Vader" = "smashing things."Vympel wrote:As for Vader's dialog, Vader should be pissed that he just lost Luke. It's no contradiction with his character to get over that when actually trying to persuade his son to come with him later.

Re: Things You Wish Weren't In The OT
Why would Vader be shocked? AT NO POINT did Luke ever exhibit any inclination to actually join in Vader's scheme. 'Yeah, I suspected this wouldn't work but it was worth a try' is a lot more in line with what happened in the movie.
'Next time I let Superman take charge, just hit me. Real hard.'
'You're a princess from a society of immortal warriors. I'm a rich kid with issues. Lots of issues.'
'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'
'Tactically we have multiple objectives. So we need to split into teams.'-'Dibs on the Amazon!'
'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'

I think saying that show a failure to appreciate the drama of the scene. His lost son not only turned his back on him, he turned his back on him out of disgust, and turned his back on him by committing suicide. Vader's not a machine, and his feelings for his son are central to the series.
Re: Things You Wish Weren't In The OT
Not really what was asked but...
I wish the SE:TESB would have shown Vader being suited up or laying on a bed, helplessly crippled (sans limbs) while being attended to by medical droids for maintenance and therapy. This way we can watch the beast arise.

Ok, I just listened to the line again, and it sounds horrible. I don't think they even bothered to try putting a mechanical tinge on James Earl Jones' voice. "Bring my shuttle" may sound weird to me, but at least it sounds like Vader.

I am surprised that no-one ever called me on saying that I wanted Greedo to shoot first
Of course that was a joke, but its surprising none the less. Han just blowing Greedo away was perfect, why Lucas wanted to mess with that, then mess again...bah.
Anyway, another thought. I think it would have been cool to put in one bit from the ROTJ novel, where Lando leads the B and Y wings on an attack on the 'Communications Ship'. It doesn't even have to BE that ship, it could just be an ISD, but flying INTO the thing, blasting the crap out of it and flying away as it blows would be cool. We get far too little Cap Ship action in ROTJ, just fighter on fighter combat. Which is cool, but we see one ISD blow up from a salvo of fire, and Executor crash into the Death Star. Excepting the shots the DS made, thats it...

I agree that Wookiees would have been better than Ewoks, but I seem to remember that DS2 was a secret project. Endor seems to be an unknown/remote planet, and Kashyyyk is not. Thus, Kashyyyk would make a poor location for a secret project.FSTargetDrone wrote:Yeah and it would have been a nice tie-in (now) with the Wookiees from ROTS who were fighting alongside the Clone Troopers only to have those apparent allies suddenly turn on them. All those years later in ROTJ, the Wookiees would finally have their day against the now-stormtroopers who slaughtered their fellows.Simon_Jester wrote:OK, that makes sense. Come to think of it, it reminds me of the change I would really like to see: Ewoks replaced by Wookiees. I can believe Stone Age Wookiees mauling the crap out of stormtroopers. But teddy bears? Doesn't do it for me.

ANH: Greedo/Han, remove some of the clutter from Mos Eisley. The entire exchange between Luke, Biggs and Red Leader before they take off should be restored -not the cut up version.
TESB: "Alert my star destroyer" should be replaced with "Bring my shuttle", the 1997 Executor shots should all be cut.
ROTJ: The song and dance numbers in Jabba's Palace need to go or be shunted into the background. Luke and Leia should not be siblings!
She doesn't have to be related to Luke or anyone else to be the "Other".

ROFLMAO at your sig, Elfdart. Is that from New Rules or elsewhere on Realtime? Youtube link?
What's the entire exchange?
Well before the Special Edition it was never in there. You'd be lucky to know how the fuck Luke even knew Biggs, apart from some mumbling about it on Tatooine with Owen and Beru. The entire exchange between Luke, Biggs and Red Leader before they take off should be restored -not the cut up version.

They showed part of the Luke/Biggs/Red Leader scene in The Making of Star Wars. It's pretty much the same as in the SE version, except that Red Leader asks Luke if he's any relation to Anakin Skywalker, and that he had flown with Anakin many years before.
Re: Things You Wish Weren't In The OT
Ah cool, I believe that's in the novel too, IIRC.They showed part of the Luke/Biggs/Red Leader scene in The Making of Star Wars. That would've been a nice touch - Red Leader was around Anakin's age and could've certainly flown with him in the Clone Wars (implications that every pilot was a clone from RotS notwithstanding - *sigh*) and it's ironic that Anakin killed him

Sorry, did this one when you posted it but forgot all about it.Havok wrote:This is the best I can find at the moment. (slow work day) I don't now how you do the pixel = size thing, but I'm pretty sure someone here does. [snip image]
Wookieepedia says the AT-AT is 22.5 meters high. In this picture, the AT-AT is 1131 pixels high. We can then figure out how big the foot section is (note: images resized for hosting, so the pixel scale is incorrect):
and take a stab at the cable's size:
This is all very sloppy, of course, but it's definitely not a thick cable.
Re: Things You Wish Weren't In The OT
I'm happy with most of the re-done shots of the Battle of Yavin, but I prefer this part as it was in the original (5:18):Vympel wrote:Ah cool, I believe that's in the novel too, IIRC.They showed part of the Luke/Biggs/Red Leader scene in The Making of Star Wars. Re: Things You Wish Weren't In The OT
I could've done without most of the redone shots of the Battle of Yavin.
* The lights zooming into the heavens really fast is cooler than the slow rise of the fighters in the Special Edition;
* The 'lock S-foils in attack position' shot in the original is far superior to the redone version. I don't know why, it just looks better; and
* If by 5:18 you mean where Luke is saved by Wedge, this is one part I preferred the Special Edition, merely because I never really knew what exactly happened in the original version - for a time I assumed Wedge rammed the TIE Fighter and split it in two, hence the very 'long' explosion down the screen
* Whilst the shot of the Red and Gold squadrons flying past the gas giant is the shot of the Special Editions - it's actually a lazy shot. In the original version, each X-Wing is individually marked denoting it's number in the squadron, so Luke has 5 because he's Red 5. In the Special Edition, every X-Wing is cloned. Boring.

Re: Things You Wish Weren't In The OT
Looking at Elfdart's video of the Yavin segment, the "new" effects come across as a little too polished and fast, while the older effects are more awkward and stodgy, but all in all there is little to feel too strongly about (however the ships swing around the Yavin gas giant reminds me of Babylon 5, while I firmly prefer the slow rise of the X-wings and Y-wings from the Yavin base). In the Mos Eisely segment, I did see the "unsullied" version of this segment and the town felt oddly small n' bare for a galactic space port, after the bustle of the SE, but I can see why replacing a fat actor with character with a CGI playdough blob would piss some people off (yet I liked Boba Fett being cut in). Give with one hand and take with the other, I guess. I loved the segment when Han charges into the TIE bay being used as a Stormtrooper parade ground.
I fickly changed my mind about the "new" shots of the Executor that has the shuttle approaching, after seeing a clip of it on YouTube, although that could've been from the '04 versions where things were fiddled with yet again. While I liked the extended Bespin segments and giant stuffed lizards getting removed, aesthetic things, making Greedo shoot first and affecting the tone of Vader's mood by redubbing what he said is the very defintion of fixing things that are clearly not broken. Why were they done? Yet I can see Vader's new line as him trying to be commanding and restrained, after his severe disappointment in Bespin's shaft, but trying too hard. He is trying to win over Luke in secret and doesn't want to display his emotions too strongly about the affair, otherwise some of his officers would inform the Emperor.
I stand my opinion that the changes made to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in its 20th Anniversary Edition were worse than most of the changes in the SW SE, even if they were technically more subtle. Giving the Federal goons walkie talkies instead of guns destroys the entire tone of the final third of the movie, in the way that the teen characters react to the antagonists and the way the Federal goons wave their walkie talkies around, draining the dramatic tension and breaking the illusion. Come on, it's like removing the swastikas from the Indiana Jones movies. Vader may have been less kurt and angry when demanding a shuttle in the SE, but at least his lightsabre was not replaced with a bolt restrainer.
And why add CGI facial expressions to ET?! He was perfect as he was as a puppet, you don't see R2-D2 and Chewie enhanced by unnecessary CGI...

Re: Things You Wish Weren't In The OT
I agree completely. Not sure I agree. Remember, without the destruction of the Executor you basically have the whole Rebel fleet doing nothing but sitting around and getting shot to pieces until Our Heroes save the day. It would make them seem incompetent and useless*.
I think that the Rebels need some noticeable victories in open naval combat in that movie for dramatic reasons.
*Or, if you prefer, more incompetent and useless.
The movies always had this problem where they are fighing against and overpowering, dominating, evil and elite Emoire. Yet we never actually see an overpowering, dominating, evil and elite Empire. The stormtroopers are always described as crack troops, yet they are never seen as crack troops. The Imperial warships are described as badass and certainly look it, but we never actual witness them being such. If it wasn't for the DS from what we see on screen the Alliance should have just invaded Imperial Center nearly unopposed on day one.
Basically the heros are fighting pushovers the entire trilogy (with the brief exception of Hoth but even then the snowtroopers are killed easily) and this not only degrades the villians, but also the heros themselves.
