"Obsolete" doesn't mean militarily useless. Even pre-dreadnaughts continued playing a role in WWII, either directly or having their artillery taken off-ship to be used as fortifications or assault guns, not to mention the post-Dreadnaught ships.

In the 1920s what you call the "utterly obsolete" ships (pre-dreadnaughts and first dreadnaughts) comprised a good share of folks' navies.
Hrm? As I recall the pre-dreads still around were all scrapped in the 20s, as were the first dreadnoughts.
Many of them were also scrapped *prior* to the Washington Naval treaties, they were seriously obsolete by then, only really good for shore bombardment or anti-piracy missions. In a fight with any modern warship they'd be sunk very quickly.

Quite a bit of that scrapping was due to WNT (Western Powers), Versallies (Germany) and the malaise of Civil War (Russia). These are not factors that are in any way present in this reality. Those pre-dreadnaughts that managed to survive, lingered on until WWII, often converted, modernized, etc.

In the 1920s, for example, the RKKF owned a lot of pre-dreadnaughts and it wasn't keen on scrapping all of them but had to (no money to service and keep them seaworthy). The expendability of those ships in wartime (transports, auxillaries, dispatch ships, repair ships) and their relatively large and costly hulls made scrapping undesirable.

Alright but... I really don't think that we should count pre-dreadnaughts as capital ships, even if we do have them. Indeed what is the cut-off? I mean is there a date past which a ship no longer counts as part of the roster? Is there a tonnage where a ship no longer counts?

Oh, certainly NO! They should only be counted as total tonnage (I even counted training ships with armament in the total tonnage). They aren't "capital ships", despite some of them serving on :)

And I suppose stuff below 150-200 tons is not counted (lower limit of warships serving my Navy, obsolete pre-1913 destroyers have this small displacement)

Quite so, quite so. I'll need to figure out my lesser combattants too at some point but... well...

One question I ask is the larger riverboats, I have some that clock in at 300-500 tons, under six feet of draft mind, so does Setzer. Now these vessels are not seaworthy, not in the least, we are talking 12 knots and a couple of six inchers here. Do they count as part of the total hulls for the navy?

If they don't, wouldn't it be a bit unfair? I mean, you are committing resources to them anyway.

If this refers to the riverboats then I'm not sure if they should count as part of an ocean going Navy. I mean there really should be some sort of cut-off or rules about ocean going ships or what not.

Monitors are also not ocean-going ships, yet they do count.

In any case, your riverboats would be able to hold off a few destroyers, so yeah, they are supposed to count as naval ships.

Bwahahaha. Good one. Armour so thin a light cruiser could take out the main armament or cause magazine explosions....

I wanted to add a secondary battery. SpringSharp was mean and wouldn't let me. Demanded I lower armor or increase displacement. Bah.

And now bedtime methinks.

Yeah, and its firing arc is so restricted that if it even tries to fire a broadside, it will promptly capsize...

Ladies and Gentlemen, I unveil to you the pride of the German Navy, the Bismarck class.
Bismarck class, Germany Battleship laid down 1925

Armour:
- Belts: Width (max) Length (avg) Height (avg)
Main: 18,0" / 457 mm 380,00 ft / 115,82 m 18,00 ft / 5,49 m
Ends: Unarmoured
Main Belt covers 66% of normal length
Short facts:
- 18inch armor
- 8inch armored deck
- 9x18 inch guns
- excellent gun platform, excellent seaboat
- 25 knots maximum speed, 16 knots cruising speed (faster cruising speed than most Battlecruisers)
- great survivability. This ship can take a whopping 21-2 torpedoes and 37 18inch shells (alternatively: 72 16inch shells, 92 15inch shells, 125 14inch shells).
Unless an enemy shell bypasses your armour belt fore or aft and enters a magazine.
You have to elongate the main armour belt if you don not add secondary armour.

Yeah, that belt only covers 43% of the waterline, though thankfully the TDS is much longer. Thanas may recall I mentioned that the belt should be at least 60% of the waterline. Unfortunately, Springsharp has a somewhat confusing method for measuring belt length: The percentage shown is actually relative to what Springsharp considers a "normal" belt length, in other words a 100% belt in SS = 65% of the waterline. He's still got an extra 1,700 tons of standard displacement to work with; should be enough to rectify it without sacrificing anything else.

Fixed it. Had to sacrifice 1 inch of Barbette armour, 500nm range and 3 feet of armor belt height.

What the hell? A 27million tonne ship? Are you insane? That's probably more steel than any one country can possibly produce in a month or year or whatever.

I'm just amazed that it doesn't capsize, myself. It is pretty much a cube, after all.

I tried making a 3 km version but it was so big that I couldn't get any engines to drive it. And the armament would've been a complete waste.

I would've put more guns on it but, alas, I couldn't fit any more barrels on my turrets! :P
