Escape Velocity Classic vs. Override

EV:Nova isn't looked upon all that well here, but what about the games that came before it? Does anyone like Override better than Classic, or are they all the same despite the greater number of systems/weapons/races? Which one is more worth my time?

EV Override is pretty much an EV mod, insofar as I can remember.
