Remember the rule that the politics should try to divert any attention from the fact that soldiers die, meaning that the caskets should not be shown? Well, Obama obviously has decided to abolish this rule, since he did this:
The flag-draped cases of 18 Americans killed in Afghanistan arrived at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware early Thursday, in a solemn event attended by President Obama.
Also in attendance for the transfer of the bodies were U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Michele Leonhart, acting DEA administrator.
The bodies were of three Drug Enforcement Administration special agents and 15 U.S. troops who died in Afghanistan this week.
The DEA agents were killed Monday as they returned from a raid on a compound believed to be harboring insurgents tied to drug trafficking. Their helicopter with seven troops aboard went down in western Afghanistan.
The military transport that landed in Delaware on Thursday also included the bodies of eight U.S. soldiers killed Tuesday when their vehicles were hit by roadside bombs in two separate incidents in southern Afghanistan.
The soldiers were from the 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team of the 2nd Infantry Division, based at Fort Lewis in the state of Washington.
The DEA identified the agents killed Monday as Forrest N. Leamon, 37, of Woodbridge, Virginia; Chad L. Michael, 30, of Quantico, Virginia; and Michael E. Weston, 37, of Washington.
Leamon and Michael were members of the DEA's Foreign-deployed Advisory and Support Teams, and Weston was assigned to the agency's Kabul Country Office.
I would like to ask, can anyone remember a SINGLE photo of Bush saluting returning dead soldiers? Does anyone remember how much it was hushed up? That when people took pictures of the coffins the White-house threw a hissy fit?
Now we have Obama, Saluting returning dead soldiers.. Does anyone ANYone here think we'll ever see this photo in a newspeople or on any of the "Liberal" Media news groups?

More likely they'll say that it's inappropriate for him to salute because he never served in any branch of the military.

They'll get a Fox News guest to say:

Then someone needs to tell Fox News to "take a flyin' f---". It's not propaganda for the President to salute and Honor fallen Soldiers. He is their Commander.
Would that "Dubya and Psycho" had the balls or the respect to do the same.
As far as the returning coffins are concerned,.... Americans need to see what the consequences are,... and give these people the respect they deserve,.... not just read some bullshit article in a newspaper.

Already happened with Liz Cheney, thought it was inappropriate for Obama to be there with camera's taping. Even brought up Bush being there with no camera's as the expected and dignified way. Pretty much paraphrased her stance.
Blah.

Actually, I saw it on the local news stations last night and this morning.

You don't use an apostrophe for plurals.
Anyway, Liz is just as much of a bitch as her husband is an asshole. Obama is there with cameras rolling because he was there, and because he dropped the rule that cameras were not allowed to be there. It's pretty ironic that FOXNews cries "censorship" when the Obama Administration criticizes them (even though criticism != censorship), yet they think it was a wonderful thing that the Bush Administration censored media coverage of returning soldiers.
Mind you, FOXNews is the undisputed leader in hypocrisy, so this is nothing new.

Obviously, I don't follow the Cheney family's politics closely enough. I thought we were talking about his wife, who went on the Daily Show once. I didn't know his daughter was running around spouting Daddy's kitchen table wisdom as her own. You would think that people would discount her on that basis alone. What the fuck is it with US politics and nepotism lately? The Kennedys, the Bushes, the Clintons, the Cheneys, enough already.

Mike, it goes all the way back to John Adams and John Quincy Adams, presidents #2 and #6. Political families are nothing new, either in the US or anywhere else.

The difference is that the previous political families had a lot more gravitas to them than what we're getting now.

I don't know about US conservatives, or how many times any given President has saluted the fallen at Dover AFB or elsewhere, but personally the Commander in Chief has every right to turn up and raise his or her hand. Given the pressures on the time available of any POTUS, it cannot be expected that the President is always there however.
From what I saw the President acted with excellent composure.
