Joss Whedon’s drama Dollhouse has been canceled by FOX, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
While expected to finish the 13-episode order, the sci-fi series starring Eliza Dushku may not be aired starting in December as FOX originally intended.
The series, which aired Friday nights but had ratings help from DVR viewership, starred Eliza as a DNA-altered human implanted with false memories to complete missions.
Doesn't surprise me at all. I really didn't think the premise would stretch for an entire series.

That's a bummer. The plot had actually started moving properly at the end of S1/beginning of S2. If it had just been canceled earlier while it was still almost entirely episodic it would be too bad but as it is I don't really see how they'll manage to tie it all up so quickly.
I bet this'll end up joining Angel, Buffy and Firefly as Whedon projects that end up getting their story lines followed up on in comics.
My personal loathing of Whedon has little to do with his own work and more to do with his cock gobbling fans who think everything he does is the pinnacle of modern entertainment.
ESPECIALLY Firefly fans, who gripe constantly about how the show was never given a fair shake. Newsflash, the shows rating were not good, the movie was not very profitable, apparently it was the best science fiction that nobody watched!

Newsflash. Show not aired by shitnetwork in proper chronological order, with inconsistent scheduling and lack of promotion that deliberately leads to not-good show ratings = not a fair shake.
*gripe gripe gripe*
I do admit though. Those Firefly brownshirts are annoying.

Truly one can see Fox's wisdom in canceling Terminator and keeping Dollhouse at the end of last year.

He's just a creepy fuck who's obsessed with women's feet, and I find his weird girl-power-according-to-nerds and his outspoken idiotic views on firearms incredibly irritating. So his ill-fortune is sweet, sweet nectar to me.
I still liked Buffy and Firefly, though. *shrug* I just think the man is a wanker.
But is there any evidence his personal idiotic beliefs filter into TV shows he works on ? For instance Joss Whedon hates guns with an irrational passion. But you have postively depicted firearm toting characters like Jayne in his works. Its like Tom Cruise and his scientology. Despite being a lunatic or evil person Tom Cruise is a very good actor who makes movies he appear in great. So as long Whedons tv shows are good why should what Whedon believe or spew on a blog or interview matter ?
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

At the risk of increasing the tangent, I see no real problem with it. You're supporting a work that doesn't really do much to spread a view you disagree with, even if the person who made said work has said disagreeable view. H.P. Lovecraft was a racist bigot (commonplace for his time, but that's another debate), but I still bought his works because they're pretty bloody amazing and the racism, mostly, isn't very noticeable.

I'm not a particular firefly fanatic, but popularity has nothing to do with quality. Unless you think Ghost Hunters on SyFy is the pinnacle of entertainment, since that's apparently their highest rated show.
Besides, a whole lot of people get their shit ruined by guns in Firefly. Just look at the pilot! BANG! Dead mang!

Really, I liked Firefly and DollHouse, but seriously, even as a fan I wasn't willing to commit one hour of my week to that show. Season 2 just did the same mistakes of early season one, with the client of the week episodic format.

Yeah, that turned out a wise decision, considering how much money Terrminator alone is making through DVD sales. Oh, and it had triple/quadruple the viewership Dollhouse had.

You're kidding, right? Lovecraft's work is slam-full of skulking, evil brown people. Even for his time, he was a virulent racist and much of what he wrote is dripping with it.

I think that in Lovecraft's case his racism went so far that even he, later in his life, admitted that he had been extreme in his views. Then again, if I remember correctly, he was home-educated and while it gave him an unbelievabe grasp of literature and history, it may also have tainted his social skills and societal views.
And back from the tangent...
I don't personally like much of Whedon's work. I don't know why, but it just rubs me the wrong way. The man may have a strong artistic vision, but apparently he doesn't usually pause to consider that it might not sell very well.

Okay, bad example on my part, but the point still holds. You can vastly disagree with someone's views, but still have a lot of respect for the work they put out. And if popularity of said work does not further spread their views (since their views aren't necessarily expressed in the popularized work), then I see no problem with it.

There has GOT to be some kind of marketing purpose to this, they've been doing it for years. maybe they just take advantage of initial excitement and eschew the cost of running long term sci fi programs. They don't want to be called nerds, but they know nerds can get drawn in ?

How does any of this change the fact that the show didn't draw well enough on television to warrant staying on the air? How does this change the fact that once the movie was released it failed to generate the significant revenue it was supposed to?
Not very many people watched the show, because not many people liked it. Nothing a Firefly fan can say will ever change the fact that their show wasn't popular and there are a few very vocal fans who are apparently very butthurt about this.
That is why I hate Joss Whedon.

As ShroomMan said (and you conveniently ignored), the episodes were aired in the Friday night death slot, constantly preempted for baseball, and shown out of order. Can you imagine Lost or Heroes or Buffy succeeding under those circumstances? It's perfectly reasonable to say the show didn't get a fair shake, even if you believe the show wasn't good enough to be successful under any circumstances.

The Friday Night Death Slot is a lie. The X-Files Succeeded in that slot.

That's one. How many other shows either premiered in that spot and then died, or got moved to that slot and saw their ratings collapse? And even The X-Files barely avoided getting canceled. Fox has consistently gotten its ass kicked in that time slot.
