What did you get hit for growing up?

I think I got my hair pulled once or twice when I did something bad.

I tended to get struck in one manner or another up to about age 17 or so, with the methods escalating from open hand to closed fist to random object*, as I got older. There was always a reason, though I'd be hard pressed to recall a specific one right now. Doesn't appear to have done any serrious damage.

*This always came from my mother, and by 13 I was eight inches taller and a hundred pounds heavier than she was, so if she fell the need to hit me she did not hold back.

My father beat me in various degrees of severity numerous times. All the occasions except one were for academic shortcomings. At the age of ten, he kicked me unconscious for trying to forge a passing grade on a report card. After that one, there were signs in retrospect that it caused stress in the marital union. My mother hit me just once in all her life; she slapped me in the face when my genealogical research indicated that some of my ancestors may have come from Africa. I was 32 at the time. I have never struck a child since I was one myself.

I used to think for part of my childhood that it was ok for your parents to hit you as hard as they wanted, that hitting was discipline, no distinction. Actually, in Roman times it was perfectly ok for the father to kill a family member, even his wife.

been told my mother used to use a wooden spoon on me when I was little, toddler age
Elementary school, I deserved every spanking I got, both at school and at home. I was an evil bastard.
-beating up other kids
-getting into and breaking things
-smarting off and running my mouth
Well come to think of it, my dad had major problems with the school spanking me, but mom allowed it.

Having to get the instrument was the worst part. Mum never really hit hard with it, and only when we were particularly recalcitrant.

When I was in my teens my dad and I butted heads a lot. One night I told him to get off the computer and stop chatting to people on the internet and go to bed; it didn't seem right to me what he was doing. He got up and grabbed me by the throat and said something through clenched teeth which I can't remember. The next morning he told me he was proud that I'd stood up to him(???), as he'd never been able to with his father.

Then about two years later when I was eighteen he swung a shovel at me because I broke a paving brick while we were repacking the driveway. I got up and told him that if he did that again there would be consequences. He has never attempted to physically intimidate me since.
