Time for advanced lightsabre training and levitation of objects to be added to the P.E. schedules across Britain.

It hasn't become a religion! you don't create religions through census results.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:They just did it to screw with the system.
I'm surprised that the goverment actually caved in.
The government had to tally all results, so if people had put Church of the Giant purple people eater, that would have showed up in the results... and still not be recognised as a valid religion.

Why can't it be a real religion?
I put "Jedi" in my Canadian census form, and I defy any government lawyer to prove that Jedi has less intrinsic validity than any other religion. Hmmm ... based on a source which is known to be inaccurate? Nope, that's common to all religions. Scientifically invalid? Nope, that's common to all religions. Not taken seriously by Christians? I guess we'd better go back to the Middle Ages and declare all non-Christian religions mere heresy then.

Doesn't Lucasfilm own the rights to the word Jedi and stuff? Or does it fall under fair use, or whatever you have up there?Darth Wong wrote:Why can't it be a real religion?

I think it's fair use, provided you're not recieving any money from it.neoolong wrote:Doesn't Lucasfilm own the rights to the word Jedi and stuff? Or does it fall under fair use, or whatever you have up there?Darth Wong wrote:Why can't it be a real religion?

Jedi validity as a religion not withstanding, the philosophies behind it are very fascinating. In fact, that site above and by extension, the Force, is probably the reason I'm an atheist now. Reading about the shadow Jedi gave me the last little push I needed to officially say goodbye to Christianity and start reading about other religions. That of course, made me realize how stupid they all are and become an atheist.
In another topic, "Jedi" isn't the right term for those who follow the Force. Jedi implies that you either are a knight or a padawan under a master, neither of which anyone can be. Force Acolyte or Jedi Acolyte might be a more appropriate term. Maybe the closest thing to Jedi on earth would be the monks who practice Shaolin Kung Fu. They, like the Jedi, train at a very early age, combine intense physical aptitude with an even more intense mental aptitude, include a religious philosophy, and have categories such as padawan and master.

The gift of Superman is the same in his universe as ours. It's not about his powers, his costume, his persona, it's about the using the gifts he has to help people. We all have gifts too, maybe we can't leap tall buildings in a single bound, but maybe we're good with math, maybe we're charming. We can use our gifts -whatever they are- to help people. We just need to make that choice. And Superman shows us that it's possible.
