Signature drive begins to repeal gay marriage ban

A California group is mobilizing to restore same sex marriage in California.

Love, Honor, Cherish launched a signature drive in Hillcrest to repeal Proposition 8.

Prop 8 reversed a California Supreme Court ruling that granted gays and lesbians the right to marry.

"There's no better time than to struggle for equality than right now and we feel like Californians are with us. Recent polls show 51 percent of Californians believe that same sex marriage should be the law of the land,” said Sean Bohac with the Restore Equality 2010 Campaign.

The group needs to collect more than a million signatures by April 6 to qualify for the ballot next year.
This is purely a grassroots effort with scarce financial resources. But we'll see if there is enough momentum to get this qualified. Ballot initiatives are typically qualified by people or organizations pouring millions of dollars into paid signature gathering companies to do the work. The last ballot initiative to qualify through a pure volunteer effort was in 1982.

That said, if you're registered to vote in California and are interested in signing one of these things or collecting signatures yourself, there is an online website that provides training videos, the petition in PDF form and a mini-social network of groups and other members who are collecting signatures themselves.

If you don't feel like collecting signatures and just want to sign it, you can print a petition out, sign it yourself and send it to the address listed at the bottom of the petition.
It's highly recommended you watch the training videos first (it's only 10 mins long) since there are all sorts of state regulations in terms of how the petition form has to be filled out.
