Freedom to shove your religion down everyone else3'sw throat. That's just one of the problems with the (idealologically sound) 1st Amendment.Kelly Antilles wrote:Ah, how wonderful. A country that was founded on freedom of religion, yet everyone has to shove their religion down your throat.
Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. Had a lot to do with WWII and present-day Phillippines. Places like Manila, Luzon, Corregidor...generator_g1 wrote:Intramuros was the old walled city dating back from the Spanish colonization...it's not that there's less idiocy in power here (we had Ferdinand Marcos for president once) but people generally don't make a big religious fuss over comics/anime/manga even though we are the only predominantly Catholic nation here in Asia.
Dalton, what was the book that you just finished reading?
The porn is simply a side issue. A woman was mad because she thought he charged too much for Pokeman cards. Behold:RedImperator wrote:All that being said, this is fucked up. The porn is just an excuse for revenge. The article wrote:It all started in November of 1999, when a woman stormed out of Keith's Comics in Dallas, Texas, upset over the price of Pokemon cards. She threatened store manager Castillo, insisting that she could easily have the place shut down. "I know important people," she said. "All I have to do is tell them what you're selling here."
To quote Artemis Radio when they reported on this last December.... "Texas... Goddamn *Bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep*'s. REFUSE!"SAMAS wrote:http://forums.comicbookresources.com/sh ... adid=47665

The First Amendment, Texas-style: Comic books remain dangerous into the 21st century
By Frank Beaton
Jesus Castillo, 31, is a convicted criminal. He's been sentenced to six months in prison, a $4,000 fine and one year of probation. His crime: Selling an adult comic book to - wait for it - an adult.
I think it mentioned there a couple of appeals have already been rejected and they are already on thier way to the supreme court.....RedImperator wrote:One fucked up jury in a hyperactive dust bowl like Texas does not America make. We'll see how many times this gets smacked during the appeals process. The obscenity issue aside, this was a badly conducted trial if Mr. Castillo got convicted on the non-evidence detailed in the article. It'll probably make it to the US Supreme Court, just because no matter which side wins at each stage of the appeals process, the other will appeal to the next highest court.

EDIT: Just re-read the article and noticed how they didn't try to use the Miller test. If I recall correctly, it's necessary to use that test to determine obscenity in all cases, or else it's a First Amendment violation. Unless my ConLaw is off (no assurances that it isn't), that conviction should get thrown out as soon as it hits the first appeals court.
Why take it to court.....I say a good ol' fashioned lynchin' is what we all be needin' here....Lord Poe wrote:So when is someone going to take the bible to court? Seems only fair.
Apparently, my ConLaw is off. Mine or the appeals justices. Let's see if SCOTUS tolerates this nonsense...Keevan_Colton wrote:I think it mentioned there a couple of appeals have already been rejected and they are already on thier way to the supreme court.....RedImperator wrote:One fucked up jury in a hyperactive dust bowl like Texas does not America make.
