SGU gets Season 1.0 DVD Release
From Gateworld
Goddammit, I was afraid this was going to happen. This is part of the reason I never picked up the nBSG sets and that means that, barring discounts, you're going to be essentially paying $100 for one season unless they combine the sets down the road. It's bullshit and greedy, but given MGM's current financial troubles, not unexpected.

Re: SGU gets Season 1.0 DVD Release
This is a terrible decision. The only show I can remember trying this technique and pulling it off was nBSG, and it was pretty cheesey then. As someone who owns SG1 and (so far) most of Atlantis, I have to assume that I'm even more likely to buy Stargate DVDs than the average SGU viewer and even I won't be buying half-seasons for ridiculous prices. I can't imagine any of the thousands of fans who felt burned by nBSG are likely to buy them either. It looks like hulu will do well with this series.

Fuck that BS.
Seriously, this is just crap. And given that SGU has, IMO, a way smaller fanbase then SG1 or SGA, so their sales are probably going to be bad enough anyway.

Oh dear SGU has fallen into that BSG half seasons bullshit? Even if I'd remembered to watch SGU; I would waste my money on that. I'm not buying season 4 of BSG until they drop their retarded claim it was actually two seasons.

I really hope they remember that they're the ones who came up with this shit when the series DVD sales suck...

Surely this is just replacing the Volume releases they used to do and there will be a full season dvd set next year?

Re: SGU gets Season 1.0 DVD Release
This is the worst BS they could possibly pull. (Hope I didn't jinx it... )gateworld.net wrote:“SGU 1.0″ will be available on February 9, 2010, with a heaping helping of bonus material and an extended version of the 3-part series premiere, “Air.” The DVD edition will reportedly carry a suggested price of $49.98 U.S. ($59.98 CAN), and the Blu-ray $69.99 ($89.99 CAN) — but of course, retailers will discount those.
Pre-order the DVD set now for just $27.99 (price subject to change) at Amazon.com.
DVD: $50 (~34 €) and BD: $70 (~47 €) - for half of the season?!
That's about $5 per 45min episode for a show that is still in its first season infancy.
$2 to $3 bucks per episode as per full season/same price would be quite reasonable to me.
If the 1/2-season boxes where adjusted in pricing to half or just a tiny bit above half the price of the full season I could live with it. Or if the half-Season box is just the first release and the full-season box comes a year later (preferably at a discount).
<internet machismo on>
Maybe MGM should be charged with the same price policy.
Want a director... pay for two.
Want a camera... buy two and get one.

If you use the exact currency exchange. I wouldn't be surprised if this so-called "season" retails for €49.99; direct $-to-€ conversions are unfortunately far too common.DVD: $50 (~34 €)
Re: SGU gets Season 1.0 DVD Release
Screw that. I'll wait for a complete release. If they don't want to do that, I won't give them my money.
Still haven't bought Season 5 of SGA on DVD (waiting for that to go to rock bottom) or Season 4.5 of nBSG (want to get whole series on Blu-Ray, but very expensive).

MGM's been on the verge of bankruptcy since the Fall IIRC; this seems like financial desperation and it's utter bullshit. This is akin to the outrageous prices Paramount was charging for the Star Trek season sets.Themightytom wrote:I really hope they remember that they're the ones who came up with this shit when the series DVD sales suck...

The people who came up with it must think they are really clever and that people are fools.

Re: SGU gets Season 1.0 DVD Release
A few people are. They will buy the half-seasons as soon as they become available at whatever silly price. Meanwhile, the majority of fans will simply wait until it falls to a sensible price. Finally, some number of marginal fans will be disgusted with the whole thing and not buy it at all when they otherwise would have. From a business point of view, the question is just 'is the extra revenue we can milk from the fools greater than the revenue we will lose by pissing off others'. Throw in the usual US business management preference for short-term revenues over long-term advantage and the short memories consumers tend to have, and the decision is obvious.Kon_El wrote:The people who came up with it must think they are really clever and that people are fools.
Personally I can't say I care about a 'stupid tax' on compulsive purchasers, as long as the prices fall over time as usual. Until recently we were all fine with waiting a year or two after the air date for DVDs to be released.

Hell, until just a little before recently, we were "fine" with only getting the rare few shows released on home video anyway. Having to wait a couple more years until I can get it at a reasonable price doesn't really bother me that much. The prices for the half seasons of BSG eventually dropped; I picked up season two when the two parts were bundled together and the price of a normal season.

Yeah, I'm in no hurry to get the SGU sets, either.DesertFly wrote:Starglider wrote:Until recently we were all fine with waiting a year or two after the air date for DVDs to be released.
