It took me a moment to realize that...but that is indeed very sweet.
Also, wouldn't Elan's song be granting them a bonus to their skill checks? A bit of a distraction is a fine tradeoff for magical aid!

Hmmm. That seemed too simple. What's the betting they've just set of a shitload of traps and the Draketooth illusion is just there to keep them in place?

Well, since Girad propably did not want any Sapphire-Guard Paladins looking after his gate - pretty good?

Sadly checking the archives it appears to be Dorukun who was especially pissed at Soon and his Sapphire Guard. Otherwise we could have had 'Hello, My name is Girad Draketooth. You killed my friend. Prepare to Die.' Of course we have had that reference before...

We still have that oath of non-interferrence. It is less likely that the (assumed) traps are lethal, but propably still pretty confusing (because they are, you know, illusions).

I'm sorry; you've lost me there. What does the Sapphire Guard's oath of non-interference have to do with it? Especially considering its now officially defunct with the destruction of Soon's good.

Eh - i just figured since they agreed not to interferre, that this specific trigger would prevent that (there could easily be multiple ones).
Why?
Well, mostly because it's a plot-twist.

It's entirely possible that the other members of the 'Order of the Gates' or whatever you want to call Shoon and his friends, each realised that there was nothing preventing someone elses agents from popping in to say Hello, so they put safeguards in.

Or, that was part of the original oath, and it's not mentioned for whatever reason (probably for security).

i.e Girald to Shoon; Okay, I don't want to see you or your paladins, but if you want to send a messenger one day, that's okay.

That's different from active interference.

"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." - John Rogers

"Fascist Paladin Lackeys" :)

Well, Girad is an asshole...

but a smart one at that, and his reasoning about Paladins is quite right. Just imagine what would have happened if someone like Miko got to rule over the Paladins *shudder*

I will remind you all we're dealing with an illusionist.

It's entirely possible that entire Spell itself is a trick. And the real trick is that the Gate is actually somewhere nearby (say, below them), and that trick is to throw people off.

Nothing says funny like convincing a group of paladins and clerics to give up without even trying for a Wisdom check....

That's why i said he is an asshole - you have to think like one to pull that off.

He's the guy in question; an illusionist who took two levels of ranger and apparently did the maps for the party. He's mocking Soon ( whom he thinks he is talking to ) for not doing his own mapmaking and therefore being unable to find the real location of the gate.
