Only when one of the meatsacks does something completely outside of the AI's experience, or half-insane, or using science that they invented on the fly. Unfortunately, the fleshbags in Schlock are so very, very good at those sorts of things when their backs are against the wall. Also, a lot is happening in the Teraport/Core Drive eras, with a huge amount of that being outside the experience of any of the AIs that make up the Fleetmind. That's why the Fleetmind wanted Doythaban as part of it, to bring some of that mental flexibility. Interestingly, Ennesby doesn't seem to get hung up on things like the more traditional AIs, or at least not that I can remember. Considering he originated as a state-of-the-art, vanilla-helix, viral, Artificial Intelligence, that sort of makes sense, although it may be an unflattering commentary on organic life :P
Alerik the Fortunate wrote:(in Petey's case, he has very strict built-in limits placed by his Ob'enn creators, so he is artificially hamstrung).
Actually, Petey no longer has those limits, according to Word of God, and I think Kevyn said as much here. Or at least, he doesn't have most of those limits, and is unaware of any that he has left. Petey got himself a flesh-and-blood body, uploaded himself to that, and reconstructed the 'Petey' AI matrix from scratch, not including the restraints, limitations and safeguards that the Ob'enn put in. Of course, that just means that the all-consuming military monster that is making war 'for the good of the galaxy' is completely without safeguards of any kind.

...Yeah.

Unrelated note: I am highly amused every time an unsuspecting lawyer drone from the Partnership Collective gets blown away in a new setting.
Who isn't? Especially back when the company was subsisting on that two kilocred bounty, and we got to see their futile efforts to avoid such a fate.
