No, but soldiers would patrol around wearing body armor and carrying ammunition, even if they weren't expecting an all out firefight. It seems like a no brainer unless it's extremely risky to do it for some reason.Khoryos wrote:stuff

Re: Real Life vs
A scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.
At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: 'What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.
The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the tortoise standing on?'
'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down.'

First and foremost, the Prophet ISN'T a soldier, he's a fanatic theocrat.
Second, dropping to sublight closer to a planet is obviously going to be more dangerous, simply because you have less wiggle-room.
Think of it as like parachuting into a convertible - sure, it's possible, but if you get it wrong your crotch is going to be in a VERY uncomfortable place.
Better just to land on the road and open the door.

I know he's not a soldier, I assumed they had generals or something giving orders regarding tactics? If not then that's probably worse.

In purely military matters, Elite Field, Fleet and Ship Masters are normally left to run their forces as they see fit. However, when it comes to religious matters, and especially when one of the Hierarchs is involved (and, remember, Regret's trip to Earth was a pilgrimage, not a military expedition - he, and the Covenant as a whole, had no idea Earth was humanity's homeworld or even inhabited), the Prophets are in charge.adam_grif wrote:I know he's not a soldier, I assumed they had generals or something giving orders regarding tactics? Not exactly. They leave military matters to the races whose responsibility they are, but Regret's trip to Earth wasn't a military operation, or at least wasn't intended to be one on his part.Khoryos wrote:Newp, the Prophets are in absolute command of their fleets.

I think it would work best for us to assume that the enemy would be competent and not necessarily fall for obvious traps in canon performance notwithstanding as this would give us a better chance to speculate fancier defences then the bare minimum.
Re: Real Life vs
If they're bypassing orbit, we have a whole bunch of MRBMs that can be converted to launch our ridiculous nuclear shaped charge weapons. It also means that conventional nuclear bombs can be used to generate EMPs w/ high atmosphere, although that's undesirable because we'd rather not kill our own sats unless we have to.
One of the biggest challenges, if you'll recall, was hitting a ship in orbit. If we lay orbital traps of sorts and then they bypass it, it's probably to our advantage then, since cost-to-orbit is a huge obstacle.

Re: Real Life vs
So we'll be expecting that they're coming, and we'll know when and where they'll arrive before they do and have the foreknowledge, and we will totally surprise them since they won't be expecting our defense systems while we will be totally expecting their arrival and will be totally ready to strike them while they themselves are confused and will feebly cooperate with us in blowing them away?

Sounds like a plan.
We have 5 years to prep. Even if we don't have exact knowledge of their time of arrival, we can still be thoroughly prepared.
If it's just 5 years of normal history, obviously we're going to get cakewalked since nobody would be preparing for an immanent alien invasion.
