Thinking about it, the best moment to see Akiras in action is probably First Contact... we see them a lot in DS9, but rarely firing weapons...

Alex Jaegar. In the real world that is, don't know about Trek verse.

ST VIII: "First Contact", DS9: "Favor the Bold", DS9: "Call to Arms" and VOY: "Message in a Bottle". Can't remember more (only know those from when I tried to scale the damn thing).

The Akiras are supposed to act as new Federation battlecruisers. They were designed in the same reguard as that of the Defiant, albeit now to that drastic a point. They are based remotly upon the Maranda, just as the Galaxy and Ambassadors are of the Excelsors and Constitutions. It is pretty hard not to see this.

An interesting article.
I have been looking for that site for a while. Well it seems the Akira has 11 forward launchers, 2 starboard, and 2 port.

Indeed. That caught me by surprise as well. There are 7 in the torpedo pod. There are the 4 on the saucer (2 port, 2 starboard). Then there is a single launcher under the dish and three launchers above the dish.

That means the Akira has no rear torpedo or phaser capacity except for off angle shots by the phasers.

Thats what the fighters are for. In the other thread I pointed out that the Akira probably can carry 60+ fighters. 8)

Don't get me wrong. It's nice to see that the federation can put together a ship with some teeth. But, 15 torpedo launchers? I think Jaeger went a little overboard. Does the ship even have enough room for magazines to supply all of them?

The crew must be packed in pretty tightly if you consider the center of the saucer is hollow from the fighter bay and space allocated for fightercraft support facilities.

I'd imagine it would run out of torps pretty fast in an extended battle.

It most certainly can hold that many fighters and torpedoes. Torpedoes can be stored in tight packs, crammed together. I calculated that the Akira can hold 60+ fighters and have a torpedo load of more then 2,000 torpedoes while still having decent room for the crew. Using the Defiant as a base very small staterooms with 4 people and a replicator can be made. That can service the entire crew just fine. A small sickbay and some small creature comforts such as a mess hall would finish it off. Fiften torpedo launchers also works just fine. These aren't the massive launchers of the Galaxy or Sovereign class. These are much smaller 3x burst launchers.

Ok, I thought the ship was smaller. I just read an article at EAS that said the Akira's length was about 400m. If that's the case your estimates are probably on target.

The only other nitpick I have with the Akira's design is the large number of windows. Shouldn't it's hull be more like the Defiant and almost devoid of windows? Or at least a hull like the movie era ships and have very few windows.

1) IIRC, the problem with the Akira is that its bay is too small for a fighter to fit through.
2) While it may be able to hold that many, according to the Neutral Zone it only packs 300 (250 PT, 50 QT)

I believe that the Akira does have 3 rear firing torp tubes.

It should have them, but I can't identify any launchers. I can however identify 11 forward launchers, 2 port, and 2 starboard.

Not according to what I've heard.

http://www.lcarscom.net/fsd/art/akira.html sas the Akira has 15 torp launchers.

Alyeska's count (and I see no reason to doubt his claim) divides them 11 forward and 2 to each side. 11+2+2=15. None left for the rear.

a photorp is about the size of a human. if we assume its 2 metres long, 0.6 metres wide, and 0.4 metres thick, 2,000 torpedoes at 5 deep, 10 wide, and 40 high, the box would be a mere 10 metres deep, 6 metres wide, and 12 metres high. thats for a single storage room.

15 seperate storage rooms, one for each launcher, would give about 134 torps per storage room. thats a mere 48.25 cubic metres per room. If it were a perfect cube, it'd be 3.5 metres on a side. Hardly a large space. My house is bigger then the size necessary to store 2000 photorps.

IIRC, both designs (Akira and NX) were based on the P-38, though B&B may have had a hand in NX's resemblance to Akira.

I meant in real life, the modelers based the look of both ships on the P-38. In fact, I know for a fact the NX was (the warp plasma accelerator dealies on the tails are supposed to look like the superchargers on the P-38). Since the Akira has a similar detail in the same location, it makes sense that it was based on the P-38 as well. In the Trek universe, yes, the resembalance IS entirely superficial, I'd imagine (I hope, anyway).

It looks more like 7 forward launchers (in the pod), 4 port and 4 starboard launchers on the saucer (2 port/dorsel, 2 port/ventral, 2 stbd/dorsel & 2 stbd/ventral). The other possible launchers look more like sensors, windows, or something to me...

That doesn't work out. We saw torpedoes come from the location above the deflector and we saw them coming from not the same point. This is First Contact.

http://www.shiporama.org/images/akira/akira11.jpg

I can't verify that the saucers have 4 port and 4 starboard. I can only see two port and two starboard, only topside. On the other hand this picture right here verifies the launchers shown in First Contact and also shows a launcher just below the deflector.
