Attempted Airline Bombing

Post by Broomstick »

This probably belongs in Hall of Shame, but I don't think I can start a new topic there - move if appropriate.

Here's the story so far:
A passenger on board a transatlantic Northwest Airlines flight set off firecrackers as it was arriving in the US city of Detroit, the airline says.

The blast caused panic on board the Airbus 330, which had flown from Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Several people were slightly injured.

The passenger suspected of setting off the firecrackers was subdued and taken into custody.

An FBI spokeswoman told the BBC the agency was investigating.

Susan Elliott, spokeswoman for Delta Airlines - the parent company of Northwest - said 278 passengers were on board Flight 253 when the incident took place at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on Friday afternoon.

The flight landed safely at the airport just before 1200 local time (1700 GMT).

At least one passenger was taken to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor.

The Federal Aviation Administration is also investigating.

The BBC's Imtiaz Tyab in Washington says many questions are being raised about how the passenger managed to bring the firecrackers on board.

In a statement, the US Transportation Security Administration said a search of the aircraft and all baggage was taking place in a "remote area".
Who the FUCK would think it's a good idea to do this?

Also, how the hell did he get firecrackers on board? Once again, we seem to have security that is more show and less real security.

You partially do, in the same fashion El Al has control over security of their planes in foreign airports.

Of course, airport security will now be even more paranoid than before.

Uh, right - does anyone with airplanes anywhere think firecrackers on board is a good idea? Show of hands? No, I didn't think so.

Europe has airliner security, too, even if the details differ from the US. Tell me, when did the Netherlands decide that it was OK to bring firecrackers on board a flight?

Beyond that - what kind of a fucking moron do you need to be to
1) Bring firecrackers on board any airplane as a carry on
2) Bring them to the US, of all places
3) Actually set the fuckers off on board

Maybe it's a disgruntled Delta customer? Disgruntled airline customers can go pretty far, I've heard.

Most recent update is that he was a Nigerian who set off an "explosive device". He was apparently removed from the plane shackled to a gurney, both hands bandaged, and taken to the Ann Arbor medical center for treatment of his injuries.

I guess that might answer what sort of moron does this....

And now its getting called an attempt at blowing up the airplane. It begs the question, why do it once already on the ground?

Once the plane has landed, people let down their guard?

He had trouble lighting the fuse?

He's an idiot?

Maybe he hoped that if he blew it up next to the terminal building there would be even more causalities than if the plane had blown up in mid-air?

I don't know, really.

Update:
AP sources: Al-Qaida link in failed plane attack

By LARRY MARGASAK and LARA JAKES and JIM IRWIN, Associated Press Writers Larry Margasak And Lara Jakes And Jim Irwin, Associated Press Writers 18 mins ago

DETROIT – A Northwest Airlines passenger from Nigeria, who said he was acting on al-Qaida's instructions, set off an explosive device Friday in a failed terrorist attack on the plane as it was landing in Detroit, federal officials said.

Flight 253 with 278 passengers aboard was 20 minutes from the airport when it sounded like a firecracker had exploded, witnesses said. One passenger jumped over others and tried to subdue the man. Shortly afterward, the suspect was taken to a front row seat with his pants cut off and his legs burned.

The White House said it believed it was an attempted act of terrorism and stricter security measures were quickly imposed on airline travel, but were not specified.

Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab. Others had slightly different spellings.

One law enforcement source said the man claimed to have been instructed by al-Qaida to detonate the plane over U.S. soil.

"It sounded like a firecracker in a pillowcase," said Peter Smith, a passenger from the Netherlands. "First there was a pop, and then (there) was smoke."

At least one passenger acted heroically.

Smith said the passenger, sitting opposite the man, climbed over passengers, went across the aisle and tried to restrain the man. The heroic passenger appeared to have been burned.

The incident was reminiscent of convicted shoe bomber Richard Reid, who tried to destroy a trans-Atlantic flight in 2001 with explosives hidden in his shoes, but was subdued by other passengers. Reid is serving a life sentence.

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., ranking GOP member of the House Homeland Security Committee, said the flight began in Nigeria and went through Amsterdam en route to Detroit.

A statement Delta, which acquired Northwest, said, "Upon approach to Detroit, a passenger caused a disturbance onboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253. The passenger was subdued immediately and the crew requested that law enforcement meet the flight upon arrival.

"The flight, operated by Northwest using an Airbus 330-300 aircraft with 278 passengers onboard, landed safely. The passenger was taken into custody and questioned by law enforcement authorities."

The FBI and the Homeland Security Department issued an intelligence note on Nov. 20 about the threat picture for the 2009 holiday season from Thanksgiving through Jan. 1. At the time, intelligence officials said they had no specific information about attack plans by al-Qaida or other terrorist groups. The intelligence note was obtained by The Associated Press.

President Barack Obama was notified of the incident and discussed it with security officials, the White House said. It said he is monitoring the situation and receiving regular updates from his vacation spot in Hawaii.

There was nothing out of the ordinary about Flight 253 on Friday until it was on final approach to Detroit, said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory. That is when the pilot declared an emergency and landed without incident shortly thereafter, Cory said. The plane landed at 12:51 p.m. EST.

One U.S. intelligence official said the explosive device was a mix of powder and liquid. It failed when the passenger tried to detonate it.

The passenger was being questioned Friday evening. An intelligence source said the Nigerian passenger was being held and treated in an Ann Arbor, Mich., hospital.

All the sources spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing.

The official said an official determination of a terrorist act would have to come from the attorney general. The official added that additional security measures were being taken without raising the airline threat level, but declined to describe them.

The White House was coordinating briefings for the president through the Homeland Security Department, the Transportation Security Administration and the FBI.

A law enforcement source said the explosives may have been strapped to the man's body but investigators weren't immediately certain, partly because of the struggle with other passengers.

One passenger from the flight was taken to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, hospital spokeswoman Tracy Justice said. She didn't know the person's condition, or whether the person was a man or woman. She referred all inquiries to the FBI.

Passenger Syed Jafri, a U.S. citizen who had flown from the United Arab Emirates, said the incident occurred during the plane's descent. Jafri said he was seated three rows behind the passenger and said he saw a glow, and noticed a smoke smell. Then, he said, "a young man behind me jumped on him."

"Next thing you know, there was a lot of panic," he said.

Rich Griffith, a passenger from Pontiac, said he was seated too far in the back to see what had happened. But he said he didn't mind being detained on the plane for several hours. "It's frustrating if you don't want to keep your country safe," he said. "We can't have what's going on everywhere else happening here."

J.P. Karas, 55, of Wyandotte, Mich., said he was driving down a road near the airport and saw a Delta jet at the end of the runway, surrounded by police cars, an ambulance, a bus and some TV trucks.

"I don't ever recall seeing a plane on that runway ever before and I pass by there frequently," he said.

Karas said it was difficult to tell what was going on, but it looked like the front wheel was off the runway.

"We encourage those with future travel plans to stay in touch with their airline and to visit http://www.tsa.gov for updates," Homeland Security Department said in a statement.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has been briefed on the incident and is closely monitoring the situation.

The department encouraged travelers to be observant and aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement officials.

(This version CORRECTS time of landing to 12:51 p.m. EST.)
This clown can claim whatever he likes, so it will be interesting to see if this is for real. Seems rather sloppy, but then again so was the Shoe Bomber.

So it was a mix bomb and he fucked up the mix and it fissiled on him, burning instead of exploding or at least that's what the reports are at the moment. Firework indeed.

It could be extremists send out people like the shoebomber and this guy to probe our security, not so much with expectation they'll actually succeed. After all, the likes of Al Quaeda seem quite willing to sacrifice agents for the cause.

Depending on what it was made out of, some of this shit is hard to spot on X-Ray. Given thee statements that it might have been on his person, well liquid and powder doesn't set off a metal detector, and thats why shoes are removed, and why the TSA is so keen on body scanners and pat downs.

He boarded the flight in Nigeria. Unless they do rescreening, fat chance that the Nigerian security personnel caught anything after they received a couple of Lincolns each.

You're quite right, I missed that it originated in Nigeria. I still stand by my statement though, fireworks and low explosives are a pain to catch on X Ray, they have a bad habit of blending in where high explosives which stand out pretty clearly.

They didn't. However, even though security at Schiphol isn't the cattle-hoarding craziness I've experienced at places like JFK or Newark I'm not sure this could've been prevented; as a passenger you're passing through metal detectors and your carry-on luggage is X-rayed and occasionally further inspected, but if this bozo kept the explosives on his person I doubt they'd have shown up on anything. It's not like every single passenger is patted down even at American airports, after all.

A bit more about the suspect in question:
Nigeria banker fears son is alleged plane attacker

By JIM IRWIN, Associated Press Writer

DETROIT – A prominent Nigerian banker said Saturday he feared his son was the man authorities say tried to blow up a plane as it prepared to land in Detroit before nearby passengers — who saw a glow and heard what sounded like firecrackers — tackled him.

The suspect tried ignite the explosive device onboard a Northwest Airlines plane from Amsterdam just before it landed in Detroit on Friday, officials said. Travelers who say they smelled smoke and heard a popping noise said at least one man climbed over a seat and jumped on the man.

An official said the U.S. had known for at least two years that that the suspect — identified as a Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab — could have had terrorist ties and was on a list that includes people with known or suspected ties to a terrorist organization.

Mutallab claimed to have been instructed by al-Qaida to detonate the plane over U.S. soil, said a U.S. law enforcement official. But others cautioned that such claims could not be verified immediately. All the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing.

In Nigeria, the father told The Associated Press that his son, a former university student in London, had left Britain to travel abroad and may have gone to Yemen, an unstable country on the tip of the Arabian Peninsula where al-Qaida has increasingly found safe havens.

Alhaji Umaru Mutallab said he didn't know exactly where his son was and planned to speak with Nigerian authorities Saturday.

"I believe he might have been to Yemen, but we are investigating to determine that," said the elder Mutallab, who served as chairman of First Bank of Nigeria from 1999 through this month. He said he would provide more details later Saturday as he learned more from authorities.

London's Metropolitan Police also was working with U.S. officials, said a spokeswoman who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with department policy. A search was under way Saturday at an apartment building where Mutallab is said to have lived in a posh West London neighborhood.

University College London issued a statement saying a student named Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab studied mechanical engineering there between September 2005 and June 2008. But the college said it wasn't certain the student was the same person who was on the plane.

The White House said it believed it was an attempted act of terrorism and stricter security measures were quickly imposed on airline travel. Dutch anti-terrorism authorities said the U.S. has asked all airlines to take extra precautions on flights worldwide that are bound for the United States.

The incident was reminiscent of Richard Reid, who tried to destroy a trans-Atlantic flight in 2001 with explosives hidden in his shoes, but was subdued by other passengers.

Intelligence and anti-terrorism officials in Yemen said they were investigating claims by the suspect that he picked up the explosive device and instructions on how to use it in that country. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

Passenger Syed Jafry, a U.S. citizen who had flown from the United Arab Emirates and was one of the 278 passengers onboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253, said the incident occurred during the plane's descent. Jafry said he was seated three rows behind the passenger, saw a glow and then smelled smoke.

It was another passenger, who Jafry described as being in his 20s or early 30s and having a medium, stocky build, who quickly jumped toward the man who had started the fire.

"He did a good job with his power, tackled him and put him under arrest," Jafry said Saturday.

Melinda Dennis, another passenger who was seated in the front row of the plane, said the man involved was brought to the front row and seated near her. She said his legs appeared to be badly burned and his pants were cut off. She said he was taken off the plane handcuffed to a stretcher.

Multiple law enforcement officials also said the man appeared badly burned on his legs, indicating the explosive was strapped there. The components were apparently mixed in-flight and included a powdery substance, multiple law enforcement and counterterrorism officials said.

An intelligence official said he was being held and treated in an Ann Arbor, Mich., hospital. A spokeswoman for the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor said one passenger from the flight was taken there, but referred all inquiries to the FBI.

A law enforcement official said evidence seized from the suspect — including his tattered clothes — have been sent to the FBI laboratory at Quantico, Va. The official also spoke on condition of anonymity because discussion of the ongoing investigation is not authorized.

The list that Mutallab had been on is maintained by the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center and includes about 550,000 names, an official said. People on that list are not necessarily on the no-fly list, and New York congressman Peter King says Mutallab was not on the no-fly list. Dutch anti-terrorism authorities said Mutallab was traveling on a U.S. visa valid through the first half of 2010.

Officials in the Netherlands said an initial investigation showed that routine security procedures were followed at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam with no irregularities. Mutallab's name was on the passenger manifesto that was forwarded and approved by U.S. authorities before takeoff.

U.S. federal officials said there would be heightened security for both domestic and international flights at airports across the country, but the intensified levels would likely be "layered," differing from location to location depending on alerts, security concerns and other factors.

Some airlines in the U.S. have told passengers new rules require them to stay in seats one hour before landing.

U.S.-bound travelers were undergoing body searches at Amsterdam's airport, and passengers flying to the United States from London's Heathrow said they received text messages informing them that the hand baggage allowance had been reduced to one item.

"The extra measures apply worldwide on all flights to the U.S. as of now and for an indefinite period," says Judith Sluiter, spokeswoman for the Dutch National Coordinator for Counterterrorism.

President Barack Obama was notified of the incident and discussed it with security officials, the White House said. Officials said he is monitoring the situation and receiving regular updates from his vacation spot in Hawaii.

Nigeria's information minister, Dora Akunyili, condemned the attempted bombing. She said the government has opened its own investigation into the suspect and will work with U.S. authorities.

"We state very clearly that as a nation we abhor all forms of violence," Akunyili said in a statement issued Saturday.

More seriously, it's inevitable that another one of these absurdities like the Shoe Bomber was going to happen sooner or later. It's more or less non-News, especially considering the plane was originally security screened in Lagos and I seriously doubt this guy got off in the Netherlands and was re-screened. Nigeria is one of the most corruption nations on the planet and if al-Qaeda had one I'm sure they could smuggle a nuclear bomb onto a US-bound passenger plane there.

The Dutch have said he switched planes in Amsterdam; I don’t think any Nigerian airline, nor more then a handful in Africa in total, are allowed to fly direct to the US. Airports don’t rescreen people changing flights who stay inside the terminal, but that may end up being change now for certain carriers.

When I flew through Schiphol last year i had to go through screening before boarding my flight. I hve had to do this on any connecting flight I have been on that is international. Screening is done at gate level, not terminal. I don't know if there is terminal level screening.

I really am amazed we've had such bloody morons for enemies. Well, i guess it helps if you have a 7th century education for most of your leaders and footsoldiers.
