Re: The OotS thread
That little piece about 'it should have been Soon' is really interesting. While Roy is correct that Girard was a retard about the whole non-interference thing, it looks like they have some sort of reason to severely dislike the dude.

Re: The OotS thread
Check the crayon histories again Ford. We already know why they dislike Soon. He was obsessed with closing the gates at all cost. When closing the final gate; he ordered it shut when Kraagor was still inside fighting rift monsters which killed Kraagor.

Dang, the Order of the Snarl splintered rather terribly, didn't they?

Mind you, remembering about the Dwarf now, I have an idea why there is a world 'in the Rift'.

Going by the tile of strip 276 ( "The Crayons of Time: The Order of the Scribble" ), they were "The Order of the Scribble". Did I miss/forget it and were they given the name "Order of the Snarl" elsewhere?FaxModem1 wrote:Dang, the Order of the Snarl splintered rather terribly, didn't they?

I wonder who the "us" is that the spell is set to notify.

Re: The OotS thread
Huh, we're looking at a probable epic level spell construct here. Wouldn't it be a hell of a twist if the message function is sufficiently overpowered to crack open the soul gem holding Lirian and Dorukan(presuming of course that at least one of them was included in the mysterious 'us')? If Girard's alive, we can presume hm oto have received it, and probably any descendants he may have had, but whether any other members of the Order of the Scribble would have been notified is entirely up in the air.
The really interesting thing is that Roy survived a shot that Girard apparently felt sufficient to at least have a shot at putting paid to an epic level paladin. For plot purposes it's likely that Haley made her Evasion enhanced reflex save, but I have to wonder what rabbit is going to be pulled out of the hat to cause V and Elan's survival. Granted, V's been remarkably tough to kill for an elf wizard, and there's probably a class feature of the Dashing Swordsman class to mysteriously survive certain death.

Re: The OotS thread
Ignoring the foreshadowing throwaway line Roy has, I think the most interesting thing here is how the other characters of the first party (or, two of them at least) were convinced that Soon the Palad would break his word and come looking at the other gates.
Also of astounding interest is the fact that Soon forgot where they had found and closed a gate, quite possibly the most horrific blunder he could ever commit given the circumstances. Unless, of course, this is an illusion to throw Soon off the trail?

Damn, I just finished reading OOTS from the beginning all the way to the end. I found it to be more enjoyable in the beginning and it tended to meander towards the end, but it's still enjoyable. I wonder if the twist this time will be that they are stuck in the middle of the desert somewhere and with injured party members whom they must carry.

Re: The OotS thread
Sorry, only just saw this.
No, it isn't; his reasoning presupposes that a paladin would break his oath, an extremely unlikely occurrence, and more to the point one that didn't happen. So no, his reasoning is quite wrong.Serafina wrote:Well, Girad is an asshole...
but a smart one at that, and his reasoning about Paladins is quite right. Just imagine what would have happened if someone like Miko got to rule over the Paladins *shudder*

Re: The OotS thread
Remember Recloak's reaction to the idea that the Sapphire Guard took no measures to monitor other gates? He thought it was bewilderingly impossible, and he was willing to entertain essentially any possibility other than that. Like Redcloak, Girard doesn't 'get paladins. He keeps expecting them to act like real people, which they consistently manage not to do.
Also Wraith, now that I think about it, keep in mind that the crayon history may not necessarily be accurate. Look at how it is presented in the crayon history, of both Soon and Kraagor being in harm's way, and Soon demanding that they close it anyway. Now compare that to Draketooth's reaction, where he considers Soon's act cowardly and is extremely angry about it. The Sapphire Guard's oral history paints Soon in a more positive light than the truth.

Re: The OotS thread
Actually, the Sapphire Guard did monitor the other gates; that's how they knew of the destruction of Dorukan's Gate in the first place. What they didn't know was how the other gates were defended, which when you think about it makes sense from the perspective of compartmentalizing information; it kept them from compromising the other gates in exactly the scenario that played out.Ford Prefect wrote:Remember Recloak's reaction to the idea that the Sapphire Guard took no measures to monitor other gates? Re: The OotS thread
Not that I'm disagreeing with your point that Girard was paranoid, delusional, and wrong. However, the Sapphire Guard didn't set up the monitoring.Rogue 9 wrote:Actually, the Sapphire Guard did monitor the other gates; that's how they knew of the destruction of Dorukan's Gate in the first place. From that comic, Serini (the halfing Bard) proposed the non-interference pact, as well as a system of "monitoring" divinations to notify the others if a gate was destroyed. It was only after the destruction of a gate that the Sapphire Guard did anything (sending two useless paladins without search ranks to Lirian's, and the scry on Dorukan's).
Soon's word did live up to the hype.

More and More, I wonder if Soon wasn't a Paladin for some of the Order of the Rifts adventures, like near the end, but then attonted and became one again.

Re: The OotS thread
Its interesting to note that as V and Roy are in need of Durkon's aid at the start of the comic. Whereas Elan and Haley are completely untouched. (or possible healed off screen)
