AOM

Post by Dillon »

Anyone here an AOE (Age of Empires) fan? Just wondering what thoughts are on their newest game, "Age of Mythology".

So far I'm badly hooked, to the extent that that's what I spend 90% of my time on my computer doing. And I found this one has kept me hooked for a lot longer than AOE or AOK which ony kept me for a week or two before I got completely bored of them.

Haven't played AOM, but I know what you mean by getting bored with AOE. After a few campaigns I'd get bored and add a Laserman or Ed209.
There was just something lacking in the gameplay that failed to have the must-play edge of things like Starcraft,T.A. and RA. :(

I think it might have a little to do with the story line. I know the SC storyline was really involving, so I not only wanted to go back to it to play the game, but to find how the story behind the campaign would turn out. Also, AOE's various civilizations all had really similar units, and all the units within each civ were pretty much the same, graphic wise and function wise in some cases. This is really different from SC where each civ was really different from the other, and each unit within a civ had its own look and function.

AOM introduces myth units which are characters and gods from ancient mythologies. Mainly Greek, Egyptian and Norse. Each civ also has major advantages and disadvantages. For example, with the Egyptians almost everything costs gold (even farms, as little sense as that makes) and their economy sucks, villagers (called laborers for the Egyptians) gather resources 20% slower than the Greeks. Then, there are the Norse, who are really hard to master, since all buildings are built by infantry units. This is useful when attepmting to build a fortress(called a hill fort for the norse) or tower near or in an enemy base, but sucks in the way that to build a village, you have to pull infantry away from the action. The norse also have two types of gatherers: gatherers (good for food and wood) and dwarves (good for gold). One last thing to add, the useless resource of stone has been removed, and has been replaces with favor of the gods, which is collocted in a different way for each civ. If you want to know more http://aom.heavengames.com/ would be a good place to take a look at.

Yeah, that really disappointed me in AOE, you had all these civilisations and yet there was damn all difference between them. Major disappointment.

Well I'd read the review in PC Zone (which described the detailed changes you mentioned) and it tallied with what others had told me so I have been considering getting the game. Thanks for the link.

AoM is fun, but I just bought Medieval Total War. Haven't installed it yet as I swore to finish Hitman2 and the first chapter of NWN before starting it.

And very, very large! The American Conquest pack allows upto 16,000 units on a single map.

I played a one-off battle in Shogun: Total war that was absolutely maxed out numbers.

My god it was brutal. Not only on the battlefield, but on my CPU and memory.

Medieval is supposed to allow almost twice the number of units as Shogan did. Of cousre these relly do pale in comparison to the numbers of the Cossack series, but then you don't have the nightmare of coordinating an army that fills a quarter of the play map (and the buildig thereof)!

Fan of the AoE series, I got Age of Mythology. Currently, I'm rated in the 1700s (on my smurf, in my main name, I went through a series of losses , 4 in one day and I'm going to be be asking FOX_EliteX for some advice). AoM's civillizations are different from AoE's in that they are VERY different from each other. I didn't really like the campaign, I didn't even get half way through the 30 series long campaign, I'm at the 7th 8) .

Yeah, I got hooked myself. Favorite civs: Zeus, Set, and Loki. What are yours?

The problem with AoM is that the rating is fucked up. Everyone has multiple names and the top players might have like 4 accounts smurfing around in the low ratings.

AoE2 kicks some serious booty, I was hooked on it for months. Haven't played AoM yet.
