Ended up picking up this malware on another computer, and the "antivirus" prompts would keep closing any programs such as Task Manager I would use to try and overcome/close it (the process I see being "tdkbsysguard.exe"). Eventually I was able to use Malwarebyes' Anti-Malware (v1.43 free version) to remove it, apparently... but it's cost me the Internet connectivity; previously I could only go onto Web sites if tdkbsysguard was open, as if it was closed I'd get "failed to connect" errors from the Internet browsers but AIM would work fine. With the malware removed, I have the 'fail to connect' all the time with the browsers.
Any way to fix this without a reformat/reinstall of Windows? FWIW, this is a three-partition drive.

It may have set the "use a proxy server" option in Tools/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings.
I saw a related gribbly that did that a few days ago.

That was it. I hadn't seen any mention of this symptom elsewhere, so you just saved me from a wipe. Merci mille foi.
