Online custom computer builds

Post by Hawkwings »

I used to frequent http://www.extremetech.com for one of my favorite things to read, their custom builds of computers based on budget, "bang for the buck" or just flat-out performance. However, since they've had a change of management they haven't posted any new ones in about six months. I'm not holding out hope for them to ever restart the thing, so I'm looking for other places where people build their own machines and detail their method for choosing components. Anyone seen anything like this?

Tom's hardware does a System Builders Marathon every three months like clockwork for the past few years building a 600$-700$ Base level computer, 1,300$-1400$ Enthusiast level and a 2,500$ Performance level computer. They detail why they picked each part, all prices are based off of online websites and they even buy build and give away these models from time to time.

Thanks, that's exactly what I'm looking for.

Ars Technica also posts guides for builds at various budget levels.

That said, my own recent 'hot rod' build consisted of this:

Linky.

The only controversial area in the PC fora I post at among my choices is the video card.

nVidia fanboys said I should have chosen one of those cards while some ATi fanboys said I should have bought a high end 4xxx card instead of the 5770 card.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

ArsTechnica's been a bit behind in system guides lately. I like Tech Report's guides; they're updated fairly often.
