The MkI slammed into a sand dune from a few hundred feet up, and was undamaged enough that Tony could WALK afterwards. The Arc Reactor shot a bolt of ???-energy a mile into the sky and fried half the building.
From what Whiplash is saying in the trailer, I got the impression that he might have been involved with the research that developed the Arc Reactor technology. He does talk about how the Stark family are all "thieves".
I saw a blurb about the movie, Spoiler
in that this Whiplash will be Tony's intellectual equal, but while Tony has gotten every break in life Mikey Rourke's character has been DENIED every chance, and blames Tony's father for stealing the Arc technology and some weapon designs from his father.
What would be REALLY interesting is if that were TRUE.

Iron Man made sense once you accepted the absurd technology, because hey, the guy is completely armoured from head to toe. But a guy who is 98% exposed flesh, effortlessly overwhelming soldiers and police? How fucking retarded is that?
In Spiderman 2 Doctor Octopus was given a fig leaf for that: to serve their original purpose of fusion ball containment his cyborg-arms had cameras and an eensy little supercomputer in the backpack which was repurposed to duties like deflecting small arms fire, webbing, and a modest percentage of precog-driven superhuman punches.
Not much, but if we're willing to accept superhuman powers granted by a radioactive genetically modified spider's bite it isn't so much more suspension of disbelief.

Maybe those blueprints were made by Staine, the big bad from Iron Man 1 and his research goons?
Though in this case they would be incomplete.
What happened to the mk2 reactor Staine stole from Stark for his own armor?
Maybe Whiplash has the incomplete blueprints and the damaged mk2 and just repairs it.
Just speculating there.
P.S.: Couldn't watch the trailer yet, so: Will IM2 have WarMachine in it? Please say yes
Or Justin Hammer could provide the blueprint and materials. Blacklash worked for Hammer in some of the early Iron Man comics (around 1979-1980).

Given the info Captain Chewbacca posted, and the early interviews about crafting Whiplash into a proper villian for the movies I'd say he probably puts the ARC reactor together himself with maybe a little help from Hammer. Seeing as they are adding Justin Hammer to this movie though, I'd be willing to bet that he's the one who is starting the Armor Wars story. I hope they fit Warmachine in well though, it feels too early given they wanted to follow the story arc with Rhodey becoming Iron Man as Tony's company is wrecked by Hammer and he succumbs to his alcoholism.

This makes a whole lot of sense, especially in light of the comments from the Stark design staff who couldn't whip up a power source small enough to power the Iron Monger suit. The only viable type of power source appears to be the ARC reactor.
Havok wrote:The repulsors are primarily flight stabilizers in this universe.
That might have been the reason for their development in the first place, but they're still the workhorse weapon in the Iron Man arsenal, even in the movie-verse. But yeah, your point about keeping the repulsors out of the hands of non-Stark Iron Men seems valid.
I got the feeling that the repulsor is mostly a close range weapon in the movie (could be wrong). In the first movie he did carry bullets and tiny missles in his suit (took out the tank with a missile and bunch of terrorist guys).

Repulsors have always been a close range weapon for Iron Man. His chest "Uni-Beam" has been his longer range weapon traditionally, and then in the late 80's they introduced his "Pulse Beams" which 'got more powerful the further they went', which while not being a physics student, sits fairly wrong with me as they are not a continuous beam, but actual pulses blasts.

Wait what?
I know it's Comic books physics and all but did they ever quantify that? For example can he oh I don't know blow up the moon due to how far away it is from him? After all if it's defying physics enough as it is to get more power the further it goes, what's the high end?

I don't believe that it was ever used as a plot device, i.e. the only way to kill this bad guy is to fly ten miles away and hit him with the pulse bolts, so they'll be really powerful by the time they reach him. It was just another "gee whiz" add-on to the armour.
And no, I don't know what the mechanism behind the pulse bolts was supposed to be. Handwavium rings a bell.

Yeah, pretty fucking stupid, but in a world with Captain America's shield, Wolverine's claws that never rip out of his arms etc., etc. what are ya gonna do? IIRC, he used them fairly often right after the Armor Wars when he went back to the Red and Gold and he nailed a guy from space with them that pretty much ruined his shit.

Sort of. Once.
In a show down with the Mandarin.
The Mandarin was packing all ten rings and wearing repulsor proof armour. So Tony had to switch to pulse bolts to take him down.
(Then Tony went home all happy that he won and promptly got shot in the chest by a pissed off stalker ex-girlfriend)
That was sweet. That is why Iron Man is my hero. He gets drunk, bangs hot chicks and has crazy as fuck exes/stalkers.
Although I could do without the permmullet of that time period.
