Orrery from magazine
An astronomy magazine series is starting soon and shipping parts of an orrery with each of its 52 issues.
It looks nice, but before I spend the money, I'd like to know wether someone here has collected the magazines and built the orrery already and can comment on the workmanship of the parts as well as the complexity of the construction process (as I'm not really a talented craftsman ).
If it's better suited to AMP, could a friendly mod relocate the post/thread please ?

Which astronomy magazine are you talking about?

should have added that to the first postZixinus wrote:Which astronomy magazine are you talking about?
http://www.modell-solar-system.de/ - the same orrery kit was already published in the UK and other english-speaking countries.
I've found an astonomy board Sky at night magazinediscussing the orrery and its apparent successor, a tellurion (a device depicting only the earth's and moon's orbit around the sun). I haven't read all of the 40 or so pages of the thread, but the general trend it seems favorable.

Re: Orrery from magazine
I've heard about this orrery. Its supposed to be really well-made, but as far as I know you can't get them to ship the parts to the US so I can't get it.
You're in Austria, if the cost is reasonable I'd go for it.
Edit: SWEET! I can get it for 5 payments of $70 each over a one-year period. This is gonna look AWESOME in my classroom.

Finished ones are available on ebay for about half the price of the magazines, but I'd want to build it myself - that way, I'm responsible if it's not workingCaptainChewbacca wrote:I've heard about this orrery. Re: Orrery from magazine
How/why could they make money off selling one at half-price?

Suppose you just want the magazine and want to recoup your costs by selling the freebie?CaptainChewbacca wrote:How/why could they make money off selling one at half-price?

Re: Orrery from magazine
Or the magazine is simply reselling a kit available separately?
"So you want to live on a planet?"
"No. I think I'd find it a bit small and wierd."

Re: Orrery from magazine
Do those "Build your own trombone from parts over 223 issues" magazines actually finish? You only ever see adverts for them when they're starting (as nobody is going to start buying half way through building the gimmick) and then they vanish. With a subscriber base that can only drop over the course of the magazine it seems like exactly the thing that becomes unprofitable and stops 3/4 of the way through every time.
Apparently nobody can see you without a signature.

They usually go subscriber-only after a while, which is why they disappear from newsagent shelves. From reading that Sky At Night forum thread, that one ran the course.

Re: Orrery from magazine
My brother got it, and its pretty nifty, although I think there was a miscast/made part towards the end of the series which caused a few hiccups.

Re: Orrery from magazine
I ordered all the parts/magazines in one lot, but to get it ready-made would've been another $90. I'll assemble it myself.
My parents gave me a large check for christmas, part is going to this and the rest will be books.
