Best SciFi Movie of 2000s - Vote Now!

Post by Balrog »

Originally this was suppose to be a poll thread, but given the number of nominations plus limits imposed on poll options available to the forum, we're going to do things a little differently.

You may make one (1) post in this thread, in which you will write out your vote for the best Science Fiction movie of the 2000s, defined as having been released between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2009. You may only vote for one movie, however exceptions will be made if your selection are all part of the same franchise and are all continuations of the same story. You have until the end of this month to make your vote. Any and all discussion will be limited to the previous Nominations thread.

And to cast the first vote: Avatar.
'Ai! ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!'
Gimli stared with wide eyes. 'Durin's Bane!' he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face.
'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand.' He faltered and leaned heavily on his staff. 'What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.'

Revenge of the Sith. Duh, I nominated it after all, what do you think I was going to vote for? :-)

I'm torn up.

But Donnie Darko.
A scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.

At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: 'What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.

The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the tortoise standing on?'

'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down.'

A tie between Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Knowing.

District 9, Children of Men, etc. are all worthy contenders, but I feel neither of them really reaches out to a high point. Especially in case of D9 - it's a good setting and horribly effective on-screen, emotion-evoking apartheid allusions, but the plot itself is hardly all that good and lacks being solid, especially concerning matters of alien intelligence.

I'm astounded by the number of RotS votes.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Moon and Children of Men are my runner-ups, and while you can argue that they are technically better as either SF or as a movies neither had the same impact as ESotSM for me.

Not to sound like I'm just jumping on the latest popular thing, but Avatar gets my vote. James Cameron has been cooking this thing up since he was fourteen, and it shows.

Honourable mentions to WALL-E, Star Trek, and District 9. First half of the decade was pretty weak (a little cultural slide into the sci-fi ghetto following disappointment over the first two Star Wars prequels might have contributed) but the second half of the decade was filled with good stuff.

I would honorable mention the shit out of Chronicles of Riddick, but Pitch black was better, and it qualifies. I can't bring msyelf to vote for Revenge of the Sith because I feel like it didn't actually live up to its potential, but I certainly can't vote for District 9 because it was good but not great.

I'm probably throwing away my vote, but i give it to Serenity for getting cowboys, zombies and spacebattle pr0n all into the same movie.

I'll vote for District 9, although Serenity was a close second for me.

Special recognition to Star Trek for achieving the impossible and making that franchise into an exciting movie.
