Caprica 1x03: "Rebirth" Talkback (Spoilers)

Post by JME2 »

Pressure mounts on the Graystones and Zoe deals with her new life...

Here's tonight's talkback thread for Caprica's second episode. Generally liking what I'm seeing. Not blown away, but I'm liking it.

I love the way they cut back and forth between showing Zoe as Centurion and Zoe as former self. Very creepy. I'm also liking the character of the gangster uncle. Also the view of the headmistress' family. Amazed and delighted that they showed a group marriage without portraying it as a nest of disgusting perverts.

Yeah, that was creeping me out, too.

It's actually a nice change of pace to not be dealing with genocidal robots and post-apocalyptic storylines in BSG anymore. This is a different show and I'm liking the difference.

I'm going to give it a few more episodes, but I'm guessing that the show isn't going to be for me. It's nothing against the actors (the actor Joseph Adama is quite good at capturing "Adama-ness" while still being his own person), the personal relationships, or the writing per say, but the premise kind of bores me.

It also feels like it lacks a coherent direction. The different characters are not all that interconnected yet, and I feel like the story's going to try and force them together more and more because they're the main characters, not because it's logical or makes sense. How Sister Willow will tie in with the Adama's, for example, is still unclear, but I fear it'll be forced.

I'm not sure, but it also seemed hinted that we're getting angel moments. See Joseph's vision of his daughter. Could be nothing, but given the whole angel thing throughout BSG, it wouldn't surprise me.

Definitely not "33" for me. We'll see where it goes from here.
It's Jodan, not Jordan. If you can't quote it right, I will mock you.

The mish-mash of reel-to-reel-tape answering machines with story-high TV screens and big klunky cell phones with virtual-reality-headgear seems contrived and stupid. The SFX were downright awful sometimes, e.g. the audience in the stadium scene looked terrible.

Also, I don't like the whole premise :D I don't think it'll grow on me. What's wrong with regular killer robots going rogue, why does the inventor's dead daughter have to be stuck in one? And why can't the Cylons find their "one god" religion on their own during somewhat interesting events, why does it have to be an ordinary human cult?

This was billed as "sci-fi's first family drama," and that's a perfect explanation of why I doubt i'll like this show. I honestly never gave a rat's ass about all the battlestar livejournal crap in the re-make, but at least that had a decent main plot and some cool battle scenes to keep me interested in between (at least it did until the idiots in charge dropped all premise of the Cylons having a "plan" and completely stopped doing episodes with battles in them) but this will not. Someone wake me when they do the inevitable sequel show about the first Cylon war. That might be fun to watch.
And this is why you don't watch anything produced by Ronald D. Moore after he had his brain surgically removed and replaced with a bag of elephant semen.-Gramzamber, on why Caprica sucks

All of the things you don't like are things that make the BSG a bit less "generic sci-fi" for me.

This is the guy they want to use to win over "young people?" Are they completely daft? I'd rather vote for a pile of shit than a Jesus freak social regressive.
Here's hoping that his political career goes down in flames and, hopefully, a hilarious gay sex scandal.

It worked in BSG because Galactica was an old bucket. They even said so in the miniseries, Doral when playing tour guide explicitly mentions the old and obsolete tech. And Pegasus showed none of the anachronisms. In Caprica on the other hand this mish-mash just doesn't show a coherent setting IMO. Even not so rich families like the Adamas shouldn't have fucking reel-to-reel machines when they at the same time own laptops and handheld videogames - and the Greystones a fucking robot butler. It's probably not a deal as big as I make it sound right now, but it rubbed me the wrong way when watching it, and it seems like there's a brainbug developing here.

Galactica was not obsolete. They had far better tech available. They intentionally nerfed the electronics as an emergency war measure. As Doral said in the pilot Galactica is a relic of a time when the Colonies started looking backwards for protection in their utmost paranoia as their machines turned on them. None of that has happened yet on Caprica. They should be swimming in advanced technology before the cylon war happened. Something like Ghost in the Shell level of civilization would not be out of place.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.
