There was no snow in Charleston South Carolina just lots of rain with thunder. On the plus side almost no one came in to the Tax center today so we basically sat around and played Bejeweled all morning

NVCC's been closed since Friday. Which Univ hasn't been closed?

I wonder what the rules are on tuition refunds for a missed week of classes?

We're not in North Virginia, we're in Indiana. We're still getting a taste of the snowpocalypse; we haven't had this much snow in several years. Edit- Make that three years, almost to the day. And I don't think even then we had this much snow, although then it came down much more quickly.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

My University is so scared shitless of this storm they canceled all of Wednesday's classes 6 hours ago.

It was interesting to fly near Republic Airport and not be able see Manhattan, since it was covered by a sheet of snow.

This had better be the real thing damnet. Image

Tonight I enjoyed being stuck behind morons trying to drive home. My favorite was the guy who decided, for no apparent reason, to stop halfway up a hill. Keep in mind, there's no salt down, or at least not enough to keep the snow melted, and so there's an inch or so of hard-packed, slick snow on the road. I figure the guy is still out there, waiting for AAA to show up, because there's no way you're getting a Grand Am moving forward again on a hill in those conditions. Making it more fun were the jerkoffs in 4wd's who came flying up the left side to get around the jam, forcing me to come to a full stop. Fortunately I had traction control, so I could get started again.

For fuck's sake, I know we don't get storms like this all that often, but who the fuck stops on the upside of a slick hill? I assume he felt his car skidding a little bit and panic-stopped, because he'd done that once or twice already on flat ground. The stupidest part was, he was maybe a hundred yards from the crest of the hill; if he'd stayed calm and kept going slow and steady, he would have been fine.

Look, the first one dumped half a meter all over my neighborhood. Now there's another one going on right now that's forecast to drop anywhere from a quarter to another half of a meter. And I live near Washington; we're on the same latitude as Lisbon.
[end of exaggerated indignation]

If a meter of snow between noon on Friday and noon on Wednesday is pathetic in Canada, then Canada is unfit for human habitation in the winter, and you should be mocked for being fool enough to live there in the middle of it.

We're getting there. Unless we have unseasonably warm weather in the immediate future, we'll probably have some piles like that...

As a time-integral, this winter hasn't been impressive by the standards of people who live in cold climates, even this winter isn't all that impressive. But I find it hard to believe that the past few days wouldn't be taken seriously if they happened somewhere else- to be sure, they wouldn't be SNOWPOCALYPSE, but they'd still be heavy snow.

Oh look, this is where it was moved to.

So it seems that about a quarter of the plows are out of commission in the District. This morning the VP of marketing of WTOP(a radio news station that is the most listened to station in the greater DC Metro area) mentioned that she had to hike through the woods to get to the freeway for a coworker to pick her up because no plow had gone through her neighborhood. The city of Bowie said it was PG County's jurisdiction, and PG County told her to fuck off, in polite terms. So of course that ended up being related on the news today. :)

Managed to get into work, Joe Q. Taxpayer the company put me up in the Hilton near my building because I told them I absolutely would not be driving up form Virginia in that kind of weather.

Oh wow. I never thought I'd see the day Washington DC area could get as much snow as a random winter storm in Michigan.

That said, at least the temps aren't at -24 degrees celsius in broad daylight like when I was there.

Context since I live there:

Bowie is large and sprawling, but relatively low population density. In the '50s and '60s when they were building suburban tract housing all over the place, a bunch of housing developments all got lumped together as "the City of Bowie." In a real sense it's still what's called a bedroom community: a city people sleep in and commute from to work elsewhere (particularly Washington, D.C., which is about 10 miles (15 km) west of us).

The practical upshot of this is that we have a lot of major and semi-major roads running through town, connecting all the little blobs of houses, along with many two-lane suburban roads winding through the individual neighborhoods. This makes plowing all the roads difficult, so it's easy to see why the city proper tries to limit its obligations.

Well I measure about 6 inches of fresh snowfall near Philly as of 6Am. So with the snow now shifting to a light rain and the sun coming up soon, like it seems unlikely that this storm will let us break our all time season record. We need 9.3 inches for that, but we’ve got more winter yet.

I think it had more to do with the American economy shutting down due to a pathetic "snowpocalypse" like that. We've had similar levels of snow here in Poland, and business continued as usual, though I won't deny there were problems with cars breaking down, accidents, power lines going out, etc.

But empty store shelves? Running out of bread?

My fellow Canucks are exaggerating things. We seldom get a large dumping like that, we get lots of snow, yes but it's typically a gradual buildup. The odd time we get a large dumping to be sure but the difference between us and the US is we have the kit to deal with it.

For example, I have a snowblower. That I use about 6 times a year, it's really only around to clear out the odd large fall. Everyone else on the street has one as well, just in case.

That's a lot of snow all at once, but we've had massive buildup in several spurts and everything is still (more or less) working. It's the most snow in 20 or 30 years this year and the longest continuous cold period since the late 1970s. And no end in sight yet, it's just set to get even colder.

Well, 1987 was still about the worst, we had one solid month of below -30C temps here in southern Finland. In 1999 Lapland had a month of -38 to -47, with most of it below -40.
