Star Trek...ONLINE!
Since the last post in the only other Star Trek Online thread I can see was last month, I figured it'd be better to start a new thread rather than semi-necro the old.
Anyone else here playing STO? I currently have a Lieutenant 7th on the Starfleet side, and haven't yet tried out Klingons - though I probably will try that out tonight, as I'd really like to see if I can get me one of those warbirds.
I quite like the potential for customization in this (individually tailor each bridge-crew member's appearance and background? Huzzah!) although I wouldn't mind some less humanoid options, as well as a lot more variation in the Klingon-side uniforms.
Also - I am very sad that androids, Horta and Hermat are not valid starting races, though I could probably mock up a Hermat or a Data-type android easily enough using the "Do-It-Yourself Alien" option.

Re: Star Trek...ONLINE!
Yeah I'm a Rear Admiral already. Getting there was fun but now there's nothing to do, and pvp barely works.
Speaking of pvp Klingon players have to be the most annoying jackasses in the game, save for the gold spammers. Any minor victory and they're all like "hur hur Feds suck!" and all the other standard pvp bravado including calling us carebears. I hate that phrase.
They're also annoying to fight if you don't happen to have a tractor beam because they'll just cloak when they're losing.

How utterly unsurprising, a Cryptic game that's fun to level through once, but has no endgame, crappy PVP, and not enough content to make levelling alts enjoyable. I think I've heard this story before...

They should have V'ger roaming about Grond style.
Also, my friend got a life sub, I'm still waiting to get the game (RL issues).

I'm hoping that they learn from WoW's example - didn't that have endgame issues at first, as well?

I'd Almost play it just to see a Visual model of V'ger flying around owning anyone that gets too close.LordOskuro wrote:They should have V'ger roaming about Grond style.

WoW had some issues, but the end game dungeons at the time....were insanely hard. Doing them now and back then were two completely different things. Some complained but it was something there until they got MC up and running.Molyneux wrote:I'm hoping that they learn from WoW's example - didn't that have endgame issues at first, as well?
Which is a point Gram has on. He's reached the end....and nothing.

Re: Star Trek...ONLINE!
Which is workable if you've spent those content resources elsewhere, like having a shitload more quests/zones than you will ever need, so alts have something interesting to do. Having neither enough content to make alts not mindnumbingly boring AND no endgame AND shitty PVP...yeah. I dunno why they seem incapable of learning if not from the mistakes of others, then from their own.

I am hopeful that they will fill in the end-game content soon...but yes, that is a disappointment.
Still, I'm enjoying the ride so far.

Re: Star Trek...ONLINE!
Champions Online (and CoX) has good replayability thanks to the different power combos you can make when creating a new character, and, even then, doing the same missions again becomes tiresome.
I hope they engineer some decent endgame PvP combat/trade scenario, in the line of Pirates of the Burning Sea, that oughta keep players busy and interested while they release new PvE content.
As for V'Ger, darn, I should suggest that on their forums, or suggest they get the Whale Probe floating around ruining non-whale-equipped planets' shit.

Re: Star Trek...ONLINE!
Well on the site they seem to be promising endgame content.. Borg related, big surprise there. But also something involving Q. I'd have a nerdgasm if they actually rope in John DeLancie to voice the role.
But yeah right now it's a whole load of nothing.
As for big bad encounters, would be nice but the current big encounter in the game, the Crystalline Entity is a ridiculous farce because players would destroy it as soon as it spawned. Then some people foun out that you could ram the thing and kill it in one hit that way!
Cryptic's response? They made it hard as hell and made it so it can constantly heal itself... but they didn't fix Ramming Speed being able to kill it in 1-2 hits, so now ramming it is the only way to kill it in any decent amount of time.

The Ramming Speed ability, which briefly makes you go Hella Fast and beat the shit out of whatever you hit, and out of yourself to a somewhat lesser extent. Both values reduced significantly by interposed shields, similar to torpedos.

I'm a commander right now, and so far I've been enjoying the game. I think PVP implimitation was seriously short sighted. It just seems like a missed opportunity to take examples from other games use them in STO. For example. Me being a UFP player should be attackable if I'm flying through Klingon space, but noooo instead you can't even issue a duel to someone.

Re: Star Trek...ONLINE!
Yeah, I'm not impressed with this game. I'm still a lowly Ensign, but there's really nothing about it that's making me want to keep playing and level up. The ground combat system seems to be nothing more than pressing 1 and 2 repeatedly, and online player interaction is pretty much nil. Even away teams you put together are comprised entirely of NPC's.
So far, I'm not really wanting to play much more. I'll give it another chance or two though. And by the way, does anyone else think this game should be renamed Star Trek Online War Clusterfuck? There's not really any exploring of new worlds or diplomacy, it's just get in and blow shit up. Anyone else do the mission where you massacre an entire bar? Seriously, what the fuck?

No there is the exploring new world and diplomacy missions. They are time wasting milk runs but they are there. Talk to Lt. Grall and go to the unexplored territories where any thing can be found. And by anything I mean ground/space go to five objects and press f, a wimpy but rather spread out and time comsuming ground/space battle, or run to the nears store/cargo ship, drop 1000 energy and run back. But those objects/enemies are randomized to one of like four things.Superman wrote:Yeah, I'm not impressed with this game. Yeah I probably won't do much more than one play through before scraping my subscription and splitting. PVP is ok, but clogged and the daily quests are FUBARed for the feds, they were added in today but the previously exsisting quest to access them is still bugged so that completion of it is iffy at best. Some of the Missions are nice, but the game is pretty much kill these 4 types of ships/aliens with a bunch of different skins in a bunch of different orders. I guess this could be said for a lot of MMOs but it just seems much more blatant here.
The biggest kick in the pants for me was the upgrading structure is all fucked up. In gear there is barely an increase from tier to tier, and with only 5 tiers I was looking through the PVP top end Mark X gear and it was only a fraction better than my Mark IV stuff. Infact my shields had about 1000 hp on most of the gear, with their only advantage being in regeneration.

Re: Star Trek...ONLINE!
One advantage for World of Warcraft lore-wise was that it had a somewhat overarching villain in the Lich King and the Scourge responsible for the state of the world at the beginning of WoW, so there was the promise of them as being an eventual endgame, even if you had to sit through stuff like first elementals (i.e. Molten Core), dark iron dwarves (Blackrock Depths... oh god BRD ), and Onyxia. Blizzard has explicitly come out and said that based on the success with WotLK lore-wise (excepting Ulduar and the Argent Tournament) due to the greater focus on him as antagonist, they decided to put Deathwing front and center as antagonist well before Cataclysm's release.
Not sure what STO's was supposed to be, but somehow I don't think the Borg resonate with anyone in this way.

Would still be too late; Warcraft lore hadn't hit "villain of the week" level at the end of The Frozen Throne (expansion of Warcraft III) the way Star Trek had by the end of Voyager.

I'm guessing for story reasons at least? The Star Trek (2009) movie was awesome... too bad instead of continuing to follow that story, we're stuck with the era that original-Spock left.
