I don't know why everyone keeps calling it apocalyptic. Even the few fatalities from people shoveling snow and having heart attacks are, shall we say, people who probably didn't have a lot of time left on the clock anyway. And yes, there are the imbeciles who set fire to their houses accidentally while trying to warm themselves, but that's more along the lines of Darwin awards than an act of God.Liberty Ferall wrote:Lucky. We've got maybe 15 inches and that's it... It's a lot, but not apocalyptic.Cairber wrote:wow...what a night. We lost two trees in the back yard and it looks like another might come down; there is about 4 feet out there right now. My parents are coming down to help us with the house this weekend and are bringing a roof rake. I was listening to KYW and they said our town and the few surrounded it got the most snow in the immediate region "north of the city." So I guess that explains why I think all your pictures look not so bad in the face of not being able to see my front door from the road
Here's a question: if your neighbor's tree falls and causes a tree on your property to fall, are they liable for the removal? or would that just be a dick move to try and make them pay?

I do kinda miss the days of living in Colden, NY (outside Buffalo) where you could sled from the roof after those big buffalo snows.

Yeah, the remaining ones we've gotten the snow off of as best we can. The one that looks like it's going come down is currently being weighed down by the one that did fall (fall caused by the neighbors tree)His Divine Shadow wrote:Can't you go outside and whack the trees with long sticks or something? I did that at my parents this year since I am minding the place while they are gone, one tree / bush thing broke from the strain, since then I have been whacking the branches worst looking to get the snow off when it gets bad. Worked so far.

Yeah, you might want to stay away from these trees until some professionals can have a look at them. A broken branch you might not even be able to see may be barely hanging on and with some of the gusting winds, it could come down in a hurry.Cairber wrote:Yeah, the remaining ones we've gotten the snow off of as best we can. The plow trucks finally were able to start clearing everything. This was from around 9:30 this morning and they are still out there. Several of the neighbors and maintenance guys helped dig out each of the cars in our section, so everyone was able to move his or her car so the spaces could be cleared.
Looks better than it did last night!
Everyone helped, even the smallest of plows.
There's talk of another storm next week...

Louisiana: The Saints won the super bowl and now we're expecting 2-4+ inches of snow tonight. SNOWPOCALYPSE is a perfectly adequate description.

Its moreso that if something goes wrong then the response we have come to expect is hard to get through. You have cases like drivers stranded on the roadside snowed in to their cars for half a day to a full day (we had somewhere in the 30-40 range in Central MD). You have times where in home medical emergencies requiring paramedic response take hours when we normally could expect minutes, etc. Basically its apocalyptic only in the sense that it is causing breakdowns of the backbone support structure we expect and not because it is some sort of mass casualty event. Sure its hyperbole but the suddeness of the loss of service is what leads to the hyperbole.

Really? It seemed to me that everyone around my area was calling in "Snowpocalypse" with tongue planted firmly in cheek. At least in part. It was just a big, relatively rare storm that got a silly little nickname.

Apocalyptic scenes like gas stations that are bone dry, a car that has been sitting there for who knows how long buried in the snow with the gas-handle iced into the tank.CmdrWilkens wrote:

Homeowners' association? Nah, it's just one of the vehicles the maintenance crews use here at my apartment complex. It's a gas-powered, 2-seater utility ATV, whatever you call 'em. They have 2 full-sized pickups with plows and 3 or 4 electric golf carts for servicing this and another nearby property. But with all the ice, the golf carts have been parked until today. And they aren't good at plowing.[R_H] wrote:The little snow plow that could. Does it belong to the HOA (or something similar)?

*looks outside, sees no snow*
Though we did get quite a lot of rain yesterday....
Then again, I've heard it snowed in the Panhandle. When any part of Florida gets snow...
Edit: Of course, now that I've said that, expect a Cat 2 or two to hit Orlando this summer. Karma's such a bitch.

Good week to own construction equipment.
Of course I also saw a story about a snowplow driver in Baltimore. He's been working 18 hour days since the first snow-storm, and sleeping in his truck.
Good overtime I guess.

My whole town got shut down over snow. Well it was mostly a we only gt this every sixteen years go have fun with your families!
Me I still had to work but had the time of my life in all that snow. Mind you glad the town was shut down, see South Carolina drivers are sudden death in the best of conditions. Their driving skills being worse than my grammar skills. I dread the idea of being around them in bad weather.

So how's that SNOWPOCALYPSE going for you guys? Still covered in snow? Is everything still shut down? I see on Weather Underground that it's 29 degrees right now in Washington DC, and more snow is expected tomorrow.
Just thought I'd ask since it was a balmy 60 degrees around here today.

Re: SNOWPOCALYPSE II is coming.
The foot and a half we had in central NJ got down to about six or eight inches...then we got three more yesterday, so we're back to about a foot, total.

We got another three or four inches yesterday, and we're still having school delays. This is in IN. We still have a ton on the ground, though gusting has made it hard to tell what the average amount is.
