Command and Conquer original, Red Alert, Tiberien Sun + Expansion? For free? Really? OK, if I must.

At the C&C4 site.

No registration or anything. Just download them. Fuck yeah.

Kane LIVES!

... Though, that just reminds me how poorly the EA entries have been...

Still, suppose it's like the Mechwarrior folks releasing the MW4 for free...

This almost makes up for EA still not having fixed the codec problem on C&C 3. Almost.

So only the Tib Sun expansion it seems. And seperate campaign downloads for RA and C&C95. And I just bought First Decade this summer. Oh well.

C&C 1's gameplay definately hasn't aged very well...no attack move, no build queue...buildings must be adjacent...

The sountrack on the other hand...still awesome.

.iso files are disc image files. You'll want to get Daemon tools (google it), a free download, to create a virtual CD/DVD drive to mount the files on. Then you can run it as you would a normal CD/DVD.

As much as I have a nostalgic hardon for the C&C series, I can't bring myself to play anything pre-RA2 for extended periods of time. The gameplay is just too outdated for me to get into, especially the original C&C.
A scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.

At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: 'What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.

The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the tortoise standing on?'

'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down.'

It's a disc image which Nero or some other software can burn to a disc for you. Alternatively, you can use some kind of virtual CD software as suggested by others, or use DVD Decrypter or similar software to crack open the ISO and get at the meaty files inside.

The gameplay? or the graphics? How can the gameplay be outdated? Is chess outdated?

They've got a good server. I downloaded that at 1.1MB/sec with no hiccups or slowdowns throughout the entire download.

There have been so many extremely useful tweaks to the controls and gameplay made post original C&C that the game is a chore to play for extended periods of time. As the games get newer and newer it gets more bearable to play, but I still can't bring myself to have much fun with pre-RA2 C&C games anymore. Even Red Alert, the first C&C game I ever played, can't hold my interest anymore.

The shitty graphics is something I can easily deal with.

Sometimes it's nice to hear the songs that weren't included in every game. Hell March might be the best, but I haven't heard that song in ages.

Thanks for the heads up Ando. And the live action cutscenes still make me chucke, just like the first time I saw them.

EDIT: Actually on second look. it's been redone for all the games it's appeared in, but you get my point.

Ancient RTS play was so crazy. It's a shame nobody ever revisits these games to bring the same content up to par. But hey, the games are literally worthless ...

It's funny to see how far even a nigh-static genre like RTS has come in 15 years.

Anybody here played one of the earliest RTS games, before context-sensitive cursors were invented?

You had to select units, click move, then click on the point you wanted them to go too.

And if memory serves correctly, the original C&C didn't have unit queuing?

I suppose if you want to put it that way, the *interface* is outdated.

The graphics actually I have no problem with, it still looks pretty good, and I remember squealing with delight the first time I saw a screenshot in a gaming magazine. (Hell...I didn't have home internet access till a year later...)

Oh, man, playing that was an experience. Remember how it was also before you could do anything resembling group selecting, so you could only select up to a grand total of FOUR units by double-clicking it or some shit like?

As for the OP - well, fuck. There goes half the point of buying Command and Conquer: The First Decade.
