Stark.. was thinking more about Cauterize and Stat; although Borderlands has it's over-easy Second Wind mechanic and pathetic death penalty (or lack thereof), keeping health topped up constantly speeds up the game considerably, and now that you mention it, so does ammo regeneration.
My personal favorite is the Berserker for literal hands-on action, and having had a Soldier with Cauterize to back me up (along with a +4 Short Fuse mod) meant never having the stop the pounding.

Borderlands coop would be awesome if you could play as claptrap and gain powers that enhance your annoyance factor. It would most certainly degenerate into a Benny Hill chase very quickly.
There are a few RTS-esses out there with Coop capability, but the most hack'n'slashy I can think of is WorldShift. Haven't played it, but the coop is one of the major selling points, and the videos I've seen have plenty of hack'n'salsh action.
There are also plenty of Warcraft 3 maps out there that play pretty much like mini-WoW, but sorting through the massive amount of user-created garbage can be a chore.
You could also emulate some arcade goodness, and go for some classic beat'em'ups, like Golden Axe.

Man, if you want death penalty Borderlands is NOT the game for you. The whole concept of someone whining Borderlands isn't hardcore enough boggles the mind. Even on everyone-50 the game is fucking easy. So what?
If Worldshift the the 'use cards to cystomise army' game I'm thinking of from a year or so ago, it's not very good.
