IPX on Vista/Win 7 ?

Post by Sarevok »

Diablo works fine on Vista and it's successor Win 7. But when a LAN game is started it gives an error about IPX. IPX is obsolete and never coming back. So is there any workarounds to fool old games like this to make them work over a typical LAN connection ?
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

You can use PvPGN to emulate a Battle.net server and have the players connect to it as if it's an Internet game.

I think Novel developed some kind of wrapper for IPX on Vista/Windows 7, but I'm not entirely sure.

This is why I love Novell. They've been advocating IP for at least 10 years, but they still support IPX. Hell, I recently came upon a support update for Netware 4!

Novell did invent IPX after all...

You can still download Netware 6.5, an evaluation of it, amusingly enough. For kicks I installed it in a virtual machine, and then also installed Windows 3.1 on the same VM. Both Netware and Windows 3.1 require DOS to bootload them, and the Netware installer provided DR-DOS. To boot into Netware, I set the RAM to a level above 16 mb, and it starts automatically. To boot Windows, I set the RAM on the VM to an amount of 16 mb or less, and Netware will fail to boot, and then Windows can easily be started from the command line. Its fun stuff.

I know it's been a while, but Microsoft just released an application compatibility update that lists Diablo as one of the programs it helps. Although all it says is "Enables the application’s functionality" so I don't know if it helps with the IPX error or not.

Microsoft is not going to restore IPX.

No shit, but since Sarevok is having compatibility issues with Diablo I thought I'd mention that Microsoft came out with an update that says it fixes compatibility issues with Diablo.

Anyway, I was assuming that if it is a fix for lan games it would be a shim that makes the game think it's using IPX.

One of the latest patches for Starcraft allowed TCP/IP play. Perhaps they've released a similar patch for Diablo?
