AFAIK NZ never had a shocking catalyst of public opinion like the Port Arthur Massacre.

No, our massacres tend to be somewhat less, and the last one, Aromoana, but we focused on why a mentally unstable person had any firearms at all, and an improper police response, not on inanimate objects. The issue of fire arms in general was looked at by retired Judge Thorpe, but his recommendations have been ignored, imo, because they are ideological and not reflective of reality, but could have resulted in Australia like gun laws. I think Australia's reaction was a knee jerk one and was not one taken after a period of calm reflection, because you will never stop people getting guns if they really want them.JointStrikeFighter wrote:AFAIK NZ never had a shocking catalyst of public opinion like the Port Arthur Massacre.

Except in Australia where we more or less HAVE stopped people getting guns? That said I do agree with your assessment of it being a knee jerk reaction.

Have you? sure the Law abiding will abide by the law, but what of your criminals? Ours have taken to smuggling theres in via the ports, according to one Police rep on National Radio one morning, probably too much of a hassle to steal them.JointStrikeFighter wrote:Except in Australia where we more or less HAVE stopped people getting guns? .

Of course, "common sense is not common" and all that, but I would have thought that anyone who did this and wasn't a kid would hopefully recognize the risk of being mistaken for having a real weapon. Although, the airsoft culture might need to decide what to do regarding fake "sound" suppressors (as opposed to fake flash suppressors or muzzle brakes). The issue reminds me of the wearing of orange jackets when hunting in the woods.General Zod wrote:This is kind of hilarious. Do they want people to register cap guns too? Just paint the orange barrel black and some of them can be hard to distinguish at a distance.
If the weapon really was painted over to look real, the bank robber was threatening to shoot and he behaved accordingly... then the court got it right and that should suffice; it would be much less a waste of time and money for the government to regulate actual firearms.

Huh, people in australia can still get guns, semi auto rifles and pump shotguns where outlawed (well not exactly, I know people with legal semi auto rifles in australia) but all the others are still legal.JointStrikeFighter wrote:Except in Australia where we more or less HAVE stopped people getting guns? From what I've heard the buyback resulted in the people taking the money they got (I was told by an australian gunshop owner that people got real good prices, even for shitheaps) and buying replacement legal guns instead with the money. So for instane, someone with a pump shotgun took those money he got and replaced it with a break open shotgun instead, someone with a semi-auto rifle maybe bought a levergun or bolt action repeater etc, etc. So the overall amount of guns didn't change much.

Is there anything that needs to be done about fake, or real suppressors for that matter? I live in a country where they are unregulated and in most of europe sound suppressors are lightly regulated compared to america and they are pretty much never used in crime and nobody here considers them a problem or nuisance etc. I suppose the best description would be "common courtesy" for reducing noise pollution.Edward Yee wrote:Although, the airsoft culture might need to decide what to do regarding fake "sound" suppressors (as opposed to fake flash suppressors or muzzle brakes). Getting guns legally is now an intensive and expensive process and the total pool of guns has been massively reduced. His Divine Shadow wrote:Huh, people in australia can still get guns, semi auto rifles and pump shotguns where outlawed (well not exactly, I know people with legal semi auto rifles in australia) but all the others are still legal.JointStrikeFighter wrote:Except in Australia where we more or less HAVE stopped people getting guns? Sure, it was a knee-jerk (but frankly blame the media more than anything else) but that's a useless metric for success. Pool of guns reduced, gun crime reduced, mission accomplished. It's probably excessively restrictive (especially considering rifles), but saying it's a failure because someone somewhere will get a gun is fucking retarded.Stuart Mackey wrote:I think Australia's reaction was a knee jerk one and was not one taken after a period of calm reflection, because you will never stop people getting guns if they really want them.

HDS, I'm referring to the possible... garishness of a large orange-fronted tube in front of one's airsoft weapon.
That is as opposed to a "simple" small orange tip on an unsuppressed airsoft weapon.
