Tron Legacy Trailer Found

Post by FSTargetDrone »

As seen before some of the 3D Alice In Wonderland showings.

We Are Movie Geeks:
TRON LEGACY Trailer Hits the Net

Painful admission, I know, but, until recently, I haven’t been a part of the TRON LEGACY buzz. I understood it. The original, 1982 film is considered a classic by many, and is a part of that year that is forever remembered as the greatest year for sci-fi film. But, I have never been a huge fan, and the thought of a sequel 28 years in the making didn’t peak my excitement meter.

Then, I went to see ALICE IN WONDERLAND in 3-D. This trailer played in front of it, and I was immediately sold. Everything about this trailer exudes cool, builds a sense of epic mystery, and dares to toy with the notion that this is going to be more than just a run-of-the-mill sequel to capitalize on a successful brand.

It’s an adjective I have been trying to use less and less of, but there is no getting around it with this TRON LEGACY trailer. It is awesome. From the amazing visual effects to the incredible music. Hell, even Bruce Boxleitner pops up to give a little setup. It is, for lack of a better word, the perfect trailer, and, dare I say, it builds more excitement for TRON LEGACY than the IRON MAN 2 trailer did for it.

But, don’t take my word for it. Click on Bad Blake’s eyes, head over to program-glitch-esc.net and see for yourself. Be sure to crank those speakers, too, because this is one to experience.
You will go to this link mentioned in the quote at your own risk:
This may come down at any moment, so check it out now if you care to. It is supposedly due to be released officially soon, perhaps later this week.

Two things come to mind:

a) AWESOME!

b) He says "Woah"?! Did they just put a Matrix reference there?

So I take it Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner reprised their old roles from the original. As someone who has the old version on DVD I am hoping this turns out to be good.

Okay, it's starting to crop up in other places, including YouTube:

By the way, if a particular snippet from the trailer is any indication, they did a fine job...

Is not a great movie, but is interesting from the perspective of FX history, and if you know a bit about computers it is entertaining to see how awfully wrong it is about so many things.

You can forget most of the technological/computer terms in the first movie meaning anything correct. They picked a lot of words because it sounded cool and techy.

Remember at the time the big fight was between giant mainframes ruled by a handful of techpriests and PC's with everyone having access.
For I dipt into the future, far as human eye could see,
Saw the Vision of the world, and all the wonder that would be;
Saw the heavens fill with commerce, argosies of magic sails,
Pilots of the purple twilight dropping down with costly bales;
Heard the heavens fill with shouting, and there rain'd a ghastly dew
From the nations' airy navies grappling in the central blue;

^ Upgrades, sir, upgrades. Interestingly, that machine in the beginning of the trailer never appears in the movie. Unlike the trailer, I think the implication is that in the movie, all the mainframes and other machines you see at the beginning (when Flynn and Lori are looking for a terminal in the laser lab) are where the MCP is "located."

Another fun bit of trivia for those who haven't seen the first movie and might take a look at it, the laser labs' interiors and "big door" are located at the very real Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The DVD commentary talks a bit about that and the filming challenges at that location.

Examples?
Scanning the transcription from the movie...

"microcycles" (used as a measure of time)

"high-clearance memory" (used to describe a secured area in the Game World, but I don't think that phrase means anything like that in reality)

"null unit" (used as an epithet by Sark; if you listen to the Tron 20th Anniversary commentary, the filmmakers chuckle when that line is uttered)

"logic probe" (a real "logic probe" is used to analyze the state of a circuit. In the movie it's a battering ram.)

"nano seconds" (used in the movie as a measure of distance--I suppose we could rationalize it in the way "light year" is used to measure distance, but whatever)

"immediate vectors detached" (nonsensical phrase)

Hm, not as much as I thought, but I might have missed one or two others.

It's be nice if they had a few shots in the movie using an imitation of the old FX to represent the old system. There was a level on the Tron 2.0 game that did exactly that, and it was pretty sweet.

Yeah I just re-installed it the other night after seeing the trailer. :)

Anyway, the trailer is now up on Disney's site.

I think the albino guy with the "guitar" is Michael Sheen who played Tony Blair in The Queen. Also, John Hurt is in the movie.

On one hand, it came out at the same time as Halo, on the other, it really could have done with some more polishing (specially the major let down that is the ending). Maybe with the new movie we'll get treated to a new game set in the only universe where videogame mechanics are coherent with the setting

Curiously enought, the premise of both the game and the new movie are similar, only that in the game it was Adam's son, and in the movie it's Flynn's. Of course that's probably done to hook in a younger audience, wich I've been thinking is interesting since the original, despite being a Disney movie, didn't need a 20 something as the lead to hook its audience. Wonder if it represents a change in the core audience for this type of movie, or a change in the way movies are tailored towards their audiences these days.

Already announced:

More about the movie's trailer:
TRON LEGACY Director Offers Shot-by-Shot Analysis of the Film's First Trailer

Spoiler Alert: Read how the film's director breaks down the occurrences of the individual scenes from the trailer.

The trailer for much anticipated sequel to 1982's TRON was just released this week. The film's director, Joseph Kosinski, gave MTV a call and offered a walk through of the entire trailer that had fans begging for more. Kosinski's details offer fans a deeper perspective of the film, so if you like being surprised you might want to skip the commentary.
Spoiler
From MTV:

"The first shot is Sam Flynn on an important location in our film. Alan Bradley's an important character from the first movie and an important one in ours. He's got that kind of voice of God. We open with a promise he made to Sam that if he ever found any information about Sam's father, he'd let him know first."

"When Alan was Kevin Flynn's right hand man, Kevin said, 'Sleep with this pager.' Amazingly, a page came from a phone number that'd been disconnected 20 years ago when Kevin disappeared. It's the number of Kevin's office in the old Flynn's Arcade."

"Sam jumps on his Ducati. Kevin was an adrenaline junkie. The first film we saw him breaking into ENCOM headquarters. His son has his father's talents. Little foreshadowing, as riding will become useful. He's got skills that will pay off inside Tron."

"So he jumps on his Ducati and we see him weave his way through traffic, working his way downtown and he finds the abandoned Flynn's Arcade that has been shuttered since his father disappeared."

"It's a time capsule of 1989. The jukebox is full of '80s tracks, all the machines are there, the upstairs office is in tact. We created everything down to the parking meter in his office, the Recognizer neon sign, the Coleco game on the couch."

"He notices at the end of the aisle is his father's greatest video game achievement. That's Tron, a video game he created for ENCOM after his adventures in the first movie. Sam decides to play one more game."

"That's the start of the mystery. Alan throws Sam the keys to Flynn's Arcade and thinks that it's something that Sam should investigate, kind of pushing him because Sam is resistant."

"He discovers a hidden office. Kevin was doing experiments no one knew about. He disappeared in '89, seven years after the first movie. Kevin had an opportunity to upgrade the hardware and software and make a more portable, more advanced system."

"We see the upgraded ENCOM server. Everyone remembers Dillinger's tabletop computer from the first film. Now we see an upgraded version that Kevin had hidden away."

"Sam starts trying to find out what his dad was doing on the machine and, in doing so, trips off a compact version of the laser that his father had set up for his own experimentation."

"We see things have evolved. It's the updated Recognizer. Here I wanted to show this is a world that has scale and vastness. Even though it's all occurring on the footprint of a microchip, the world when you experience it is infinite in all directions."

"He's being lifted into a disc game. One of our trickiest shots. It starts with a close-up on Sam's face and ends up 300 feet above you. Whenever you do a continuous camera move, you've got to replicate it in the real world to create that perspective."

"There's a time dilation effect where time scales in the inside world about 50 times faster than it does in our world. So even though it's been 20 years since Kevin disappeared, that's been almost 1000 years in the computer."

"That shot captures the mystery of her character and something that's uniquely Tron: the combination of materials and style. I also didn't want it all to be action shots. People are expecting light cycles and disc games."

"Young Jeff Bridges. You got to give people a taste. My reference for Clu is the era Jeff did 'Against All Odds.' Hardest thing to do in visual effects is pull off a realistic human face. Clu's the biggest challenge in our movie. He's a major character."

"The disc war arena is a series of eight simultaneous one-on-one matches. Imagine an NCAA bracket tournament happening in real time in front of you. It goes from eight matches, to four, down to the finals."

"Beau Garret plays Jem, one of the four sirens who outfit Sam for the game. They work in the armory underneath the disc game arena. That's where programs come to be outfitted for armor for the game. She shows up later as another key character."

"That's Castor. He owns a nightclub at the top of the tallest tower in the city. He has a checkered past. If you need anything, he can probably get it for you. He plays a pivotal role in the movie. You get a glimpse that he has a flair for the dramatic."

"It's a father/son/son story. Kevin has a biological son Sam and a digital son Clu. It's an interesting dynamic between those characters. Really the heart of the movie. We start off the trailer with a voiceover and we end up with a hint of that reunion."

"Gotta have a light cycle in any 'Tron' trailer. Fans would rise up if not. I liked it at the end. You get to see Sam's skills we hinted at earlier. I hate knowing all the best stuff was in the trailer. I want this to give a promise of what's to come."
I don't have time right now to Tiny Pic and inline the images that correspond to the spoilerized text, so if you want to see them with the text go to the link.

Hmmm, that game trailer looks.... Bland.

Maybe the Tron 2.0 game was decent because it wasn't a proper movie tie-in. Again, we'll see. :?

Regardless of that, the movie will be pants if it doesn't have the best character from the original in.

Heh, at the beginning of Tron 2.0 you meet one of those, and when the main character says "Oh, you must be a bit!" he replies angrily "I am a BYTE!". Not sure why I kept picturing it with Sam Jackson's voice and saying motherfucker after every sentence.

So yes, agreed, they need to come back.

Oi!

I wonder if any of the elements from 2.0 will appear in the new movie? For example, Alan Grant's son (who was in the Game World in the 2.0 storyline, as can be seen above).

Legacy does appear to use the Super Light Cycle design from 2.0, though they both may have sourced it from concept art or whatever fromt he original film.

EDIT: Never mind, Syd Mead designed the Super Light Cycle.
