Super Street Fighter IV Oils up

Post by SAMAS »

So in case you missed it, Capcom's recently announced the final, all-new character for Super Street Fighter IV, to go with all the returning Alpha/Final Fight, SFIII, and Super SFII characters.

Wow. This is even more underwhelming than the first one. So they're releasing the same game with 10 new (old) characters... why? There's no reason that this isn't DLC other than "fanboys have no spending sense."

More seriously it's not terribly new. It's just like Super Street Fighter II. We might even get a Super Street Fighter IV Turbo in the future.

How are you comparing an early 90's cartridge game with a late 00's disc based game released on systems that come with a hard drive and internet connection? There's no reason to expect that kind of thing in this day and age.

Not everyone has the sort of internet connection which allows for the trivial downloading of ten new characters and the inevitable tweaks to the original game, as well as everything that goes with them. And then there's people who never got the game in the first place who might be tempted by a larger cast and rebalanced gameplay (ie. me). While it's obviously milking people for cash, the idea that there's no other reason is just a little silly.

Does anyone know of any console versus-fighting games that do balance changes through online patching?

It's not really a fighting game, but Armored Core 4 has gone through some pretty serious patches which completely changed up what builds were useful in online play. That's about the only console game which comes readily to mind, though.

I'm actually glad they're releasing this as a new game instead of just DLC. It kind of screws the people who bought SF4, but it saves me from having to buy the original AND pay for the DLC.

Actually the people who bought SF4 are supposed to get a few extras that aren't accessed any other ways at start.

So exclusives for those with existing SF4 data (unless there's another way to verify "I bought SF4 before"... hopefully not limited to "SF4 new" only), AND the goodies? Looks like Capcom might have a bit of a winner here.

That is what Capcom has been hinting for a while. When asked early on "So why buy SF4 now?", they countered with that even though SSF IV will have the costumes and junk, people who have an SF4 data will access other things that are not unlocked for SSF IV regularly. Possibly depending on what you have unlocked, but unknown at the moment.

Reminds me of the old KOEI Warriors bonus unlocks for having previous-game saves, albeit those were just "having from the get-go" characters who could be unlocked later anyway. Wonder if the SF4-verification will, like Mass Effect 2, be based off of one's progress in the SF4 save data or will like the Warriors ones just be "have this save file, characters unlocked early."

What's to stop people from just renting the SF4 and getting the the save data that way?

Nothing really, which is why it'll likely be on achievements of said save data. Most of the stuff is able to do in a few days, but that depends on how fast can said party actually learn what is broken in the game rather then going "FUCK THIS!" on some of the more absurd trials.

Damn... I never could get the hang of the training in SF4 past doing the ultras, forget actually comboing anything.
