Background Characters you Love

Post by Eternal_Freedom »

I'm sure you know them. The recurring background characters in a series that make it memorable. Not the front runners, bu the guys in the background adding funny quirks here and there

For me, the list is the following:

Walter Harriman, the "Chevron Guy" of SG-1

Chuck, Harriman's counterpart in Atlantis

Sgt. Siler, the hilarious tech guy with a big wrench that gets thrown around a lot

Colonel Reynolds of the later seasons's SG-3, funny guy ("EXCELLENT waking up sir! and...good work on the crytals too" after almost having to give Hammond CPR)

Corporal/Sgt/WO John Benton, of UNIT fame. A determined kind soldier who always seems to be in the wrong place to get complained to by the Brigadier

Morn. Simply by being there and being so bizarrely cool

Come to think of it, SG seems particularly good at having these types of characters
Baltar: "I don't want to miss a moment of the last Battlestar's destruction!"
Centurion: "Sir, I really think you should look at the other Battlestar."
Baltar: "What are you babbling about other...it's impossible!"
Centurion: "No. It is a Battlestar."

Corrax Entry 7:17: So you walk eternally through the shadow realms, standing against evil where all others falter. May your thirst for retribution never quench, may the blood on your sword never dry, and may we never need you again.

Would Lt (later Captain) Bracca in Farscape count?

Quite probably. My idea of a "background" charcter is one you see in several/many/recurring episodes, that arent just one off guys, but who mostly fill a minor role, like a captains yeoman or Sgt Harriman.
Baltar: "I don't want to miss a moment of the last Battlestar's destruction!"
Centurion: "Sir, I really think you should look at the other Battlestar."
Baltar: "What are you babbling about other...it's impossible!"
Centurion: "No. It is a Battlestar."

Lt. Corwin on Babylon 5. He barely gets to say anything that isn't technical jargon, except when he thinks Ivanova is hitting on him, but still manages to be an entertaining character.
"Gunslinger indeed. Quick draw, Bob. Quick draw." --Count Chocula

"Unquestionably, Dr. Who is MUCH lighter in tone than WH40K. But then, I could argue the entirety of WWII was much lighter in tone than WH40K." --Broomstick

"This is ridiculous. I look like the Games Workshop version of a Jedi Knight." --Harry Dresden, Changes

"Like...are we canonical?" --Aaron Dembski-Bowden to Dan Abnett

Captain Aaron Kelly from nBSG. He was a good background character that would pop up now and then, and of course his character was significant in both the Baltar Trial and Galactica Mutiny arc.

Walter Harriman, the "Chevron Guy" of SG-1
Fuck yeah!

I also put forward Colonel Caldwell, for being awesome. I think SG-1 was a great show partly because there were very few characters you could hate. I mean a couple, but not many.
A scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.

At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: 'What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.

The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the tortoise standing on?'

'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down.'

Even the bad guys like Ba'al and Apophis are pretty cool. I like how SG-1 is pretty much light-hearted fun. And, man, Lord Yu is just great. Senile old Fu Manchu chinese guy making deranged proclamations while occasionally lending Earth a hand! :D

And he's one of the characters that remained with the show through all ten seasons.

Now that I think about it, the only major (i.e. one that I can remember at this point in time) character that pisses me off is Jonas Quin, and more because he replaced Daniel than anything else.

Ba'al is my all time favorite system lord. He's smart, opportunistic, and generally lovable. The only Goa'uld who was actually a believable character in terms of not being rampantly idiotic and egotistical.

Lietenant Braca on Farscape. He is like Captain Needa in star wars - here the epitome of Peacekeeper military culture. It is a pity he never got to be anything more than a mook too. I could do with less Crichton/Aeryn angst for an episode dedicated to a day in Bracas life.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

Yeah, SG does produce many loveable characters. Now you mention it, Colonel Caldwell is awesome. I also really like dcolonel Emerson of the Oddyssey, before he got himself killed.

A truly hilarious moment from "Be all my sins rememb'd" where Caldwell and Ellis beam down and greet Sheppard and Carter with a round of "colonel" McKay just looks at them and says "Oh you're kidding right?"

Ba'al is cool, I like it when he goes native in Season 9, and then there are a dozen of him

Actually, I never liked Anubis much, he seemed too much of a faceless villain. Although his First Rpime was cool

Remember that episode where Daniel infiltrated the gathering of Goauld as Lord Yu's servant? Well, those two lady goaulds deserved more attention....

Oh and the chief Medical Officer/Nurse they had before she got shot. The red-headed one. Damn, I can't remember her name. She was a damn good character. She didn't have the Obvious Sexy Nurse syndrome or the attempt to avoid. That and she was rather beleivable in some of her attitudes towards the rest of SGC.

Great, a SDJer. Jonas did not replace Jackson. Shanks was gone for a single F*ing season, and we had Nemec as a replacement. The Jonas character was just fine. You are pissed at losing Jackson, but you blame Quin. Why not blame Shanks for leaving? As it stands, I rather liked Jonas. Jonas and Jackson worked well together. I really liked the first two episodes of season 7 when they were working together. They should have brought back Jackson and kept Jonas.

I liked Jonas Quinn, if only because 'Corin Nemec' sounds more like an alien's name. :)

Doctor Janet Fraiser.

As to Jonas, I can sort of understand why people might dislike his character. Who was supposed to be super special; with a super duper memory and pattern skills and so forth, story-wise this was so they could justify him slipping easily into Jackson's translation roles.

Still, I quite like him, partly for the inferior complex angle they had going for him, which worked quite well and second because in developing him (and because of RDA's continually reducing screen time in later seasons) they also gave more focus to Sam and especially Teal'c that they didn't get so much in earlier seasons.

1. I have no idea what a SDJer is.
2. Him being a replacement is exactly why he leaves such a bitter taste in my mouth. I was so thrilled when he came back and they put Jonas on a bus.
3. The character wasn't great. Keeping Jonas? Maybe, but his character wasn't really necessary, and the getting rid of him when Jackson got back confirmed that his existence was one of convenience.

Now that I think about it, I was a bit upset that RDA decided to pull out for the later seasons, except for the occasional cameo. I never got the hatred for Cameron Mitchel though, because I already loved the actor for working on Farscape.

EDIT:

Oh and if a character being hot is all that it takes to nominate someone, then that doctor they got in later seasons on SG-1.

Save Daniel Jackson

Which proves my point. You aren't actually expressing any Opinion of Jonas. Your entire reason for hating Jonas is because Jackson was gone. You hate Jonas because he replaced Jackson. That isn't a rational reason. And it says nothing about Jonas.
3. The character wasn't great. Keeping Jonas? Maybe, but his character wasn't really necessary, and the getting rid of him when Jackson got back confirmed that his existence was one of convenience.
His character was quite necessary. With Shanks gone and RDA on a reduced schedule, they definitely needed another character.

On another note, am I the only one who knew of Ben Browder and Claudia Black on SG-1 first and then discovered Farscape? I discovered Farscape through a Rob Zombie song known as "She's on fire" or something.

I have to say, while CB looked a good bit younger, her sex appeal remains the same. As in HAWTMOMMA!

Oh and thanks for the name drop.

I wish to nominate Natalie and the rest of the kids from Voyager. They were part of what made the show far more...beleivable and relatable in comparison to TNG. Oh and no offense, but it just never broke my immersion in the story. If it makes sense in story and in-verse, atleast enough, I just go with it. However, there is only one time where this was broken while I was still viewing something. Transformers 2. Robot Testicles. * shudders*.

Ah, one of craisie's music videos about Sikozu. There are far better ones out there, though. Shoot me a PM if you want to have the links, otherwise we might derail this thread. .

The hot Doctor SG-1 had in seasons 9/10 was Dr. Carolyn Lam. She was supposed to be Landry's daughter, and was played very well by Lexa Doig, the hot chick who was Andromeda in that series. She is also coincidentally married to Micheal Shanks who played Daniel.

I don't think calling Braca a background character is fair to him. Sure he's not a lead, but he's an important member of Farscape's supporting cast for seasons 2-4 and The Peace Keeper Wars.

For Babylon 5, I'm going to go with Lou Walsh(who just kind of disappeared in season 2), and David Corwin, he was there as a tech from the beginning of season 1 and eventually got a name and became XO to Lochley.
